Information on BA Honours in Applied Linguistics
2013
The BA Honours degree programme in Applied Linguistics consists offive modules. Students
choosefourmodules from the list below; the Research Essay module is compulsory. All
elective modules are yearmodules and each module, except the Research Essay, is assessed
by means of regular assignments, seminar presentations, practicals (where applicable), an
examination in June/July, an examination in January (where applicable) and a
comprehensive portfolio (submitted for examination early in January). The Research Essaymodule is assessed by means of a research essay (some 30 - 40 pages).
Students may enrol for either full-time or part-time study:
Full-time study: Runs over one year. Special honours bursaries are available. Part-time study: Runs over two years.
Admission Requirements
A BA programme or equivalent qualification with Linguistics, at least one language or arelevant specialization in Communication at third-year level. Prospective students are
required to submit the following documents to the HOD with the application form:
o A detailed CV A certified copy of ID document in the case of applicants who completed
their undergraduate studies at another university and not at UJ
o Official academic records from relevant university Applicants whose final marks are not yet available will be conditionally
accepted based on their June examination marks.
o A brief motivation why the applicant is interested in enrolling for the honoursprogramme
o In the case of international students a SAQA evaluation of degree(s) and a StudyPermit are required
An average pass rate of at least 65% in a relevant undergraduate major module, e.g.Linguistics and/or a language and/or language-related module. The discretion of the
departmental postgraduate committee may apply in special cases.
Prospective students will be interviewed by the departmental postgraduate committee.

language may be used to determine the achievement category for a student wishing to
enrol for an Honours in Applied Linguistics):

Bursary Application Process
1. Prospective students submit an application (use the Department Application Form) toundertake the BA Honours in Applied Linguistics to the HOD of the Department of
Linguistics.
2. The department will provide the Special Honours application form to successfulstudents. Students from other universities must pay the standard UJ application fee.
3. Students submit forms to the Faculty representative in the Vice-Deans office who willcalculate applicants average to determine whether a special honours bursary may be
awarded.
4. The UJ Bursary Office unblocks students who may then register online. After registrationthe allocation of the Special Honours bursary will be made to the student account.
5. The stipend amount will be available to students in two instalments, one per semester.Students must apply for a refund via the refund process to have any credit balance
refunded directly into their bank accounts. Refund forms are available at the UJ Bursary
Office.
6. All students applying for the Special Honours bursaries are required to apply for an NRFbursary if they are eligible. The application form for NRF bursaries is available online at
www.uj.ac.za/research or at the Postgraduate Centre (APK Library, Level one). The
deadline for NRF bursary applications is 31 January and results will only be announced
after mid-February.

31 March forfirstsemester registration.
14 August for secondsemester registration.
Bursary Conditions
1. Students have to complete their honours degree within one year.2. Bursary holders are required to perform work in the Department of Linguistics for eight
hours a week. The duties and working hours of students are managed by the HOD.
3. The University reserves the right, should circumstances be justified, to alter the criteria,guidelines and values of bursaries without prior notice to applicants.
4. Bursaries are paid subject to sufficient funds being available to award bursaries to allcandidates who qualify.

5. Please note that upon cancellation of studies, thefullbursary will be cancelled and thestudent held liable for paying back the bursary.
6. Students who are awarded external bursaries (e.g. NRF, CSIR) only qualify for a top-upbursary from UJ up to, but not exceeding, the difference between the UJ bursary they
qualify for and the external bursary. Students with bursaries that hold contractual
obligations are not eligible.
Application form checklist
1. A complete, official academic record for external students.2. Acceptance letter from the Department of Linguistics stamped by the Faculty of
Humanities Head of Administration, Ms Yasmin Sibran, C Ring 232.
Where to from here?
1. The UJ Bursary Office.2. All students (including international students) will receive a letter from the Bursary
Office giving them permission to be financially unblocked by the Student Finance
section.
3. After students have been unblocked they make their way to Registration.4. When registration is complete students should submit their proof of registration to the
Bursary Office to complete the administration of the bursary. After being awarded the
bursary students will be required to sign an agreement form at the Bursary Office.
