Honoring Commitmentore than 500 alumni, fac-ulty, students, and staff reunited on campus the

weekend of November 2 – 4 to cel-ebrate the 50th Anniversary of the School of Pharmacy at Northeast-ern and to mark 85 years of excel-lence in pharmacy education with its founding institutions. The grand

celebration was the highlight of a yearlong commemoration of the milestone anniversary.

Constantine Meriano founded the Meriano School of Pharmacy in 1927. It later became the Boston School of Pharmacy and then the New England College of Pharmacy. In 1962, it merged with Northeastern.

Today, the Bouvé College of Health Science’s School of Pharmacy is one of the nation’s leading centers of excellence in pharmacy education, practice, and research.

Celebrating Success I am reminded daily of the remarkable energy and spirit of discovery

felt throughout the Bouvé community. Our college is thriving. This

year promises to be a productive one as we welcome 24 new faculty

and 330 undergraduate and 625 graduate students—all are excep-

tionally bright, highly motivated, and eager to embrace our mission.

A few weeks ago, hundreds of alumni, students, faculty, and staff celebrated the 50th anniversary

of the School of Pharmacy at Northeastern University and marked 85 years of exceptional phar-

macy education with our predecessor institutions. It was an extremely proud moment, as alumni

joined in honoring the unique legacy they helped to create. With their continued support, and

that of our health care industry partners, we believe the next 50 years will be even better.

Thanks to the leadership of President Aoun, Bouvé is advancing health care internationally.

Profound discussions about health care policy are taking place. Bouvé’s faculty is leading conver-

sations in science, practice, policy, and education that will shape the future of health care.

The Interprofessional Education Collaborative, sponsored by leading health care professional

associations, posits that interprofessional practice is the key to safe, high-quality, and accessible

patient care. Drug discovery, delivery and diagnostics, urban population health, self-care and self-

management, and healthy aging are the themes that comprise Bouvé’s interprofessional nature.

Under the direction of Professor Shan Mohammed, all programs come together to ensure inter-

professional competencies are part of the curriculum.

I am inspired by the efforts of faculty, the enthusiasm of our students, and the generosity of

alumni. Together, they honor Bouve’s unique legacy and ensure its bright future.

ho better to help a first-year transition to college life than an upperclass-

man in the same program? The Bouvé Fellows, that’s who.

A group of 46 standout student men-tors are part of the college’s required first-year seminar course, designed to help freshmen transition to col-lege life. Fellows each mentor eight to nine freshmen and co-instruct the seminar with some of the college’s most senior faculty.

Assistant Dean of Enrollment and Student Services Dr. Christine Letzeiser, who developed the first-year seminar course and an earlier peer-mentoring program, merged the traditional program with Bouvé Fellows—named after the college’s namesake, Marjorie Bouvé.

“The Bouvé Fellows program offers a unique opportunity for our upper-classmen to give back to a major and a college they love. At the same time, the Fellows gain valuable

experience through their dual men-toring and teaching roles. This expe-rience positions them well for the varied roles that they will have as future health care leaders,” explains Program Coordinator and Academic Advisor Kristen Bell.

“Fellows begin offering support before students even arrive. They help incoming students determine what to bring, how to buy books, etc. Once on campus, the first-years have an established support system to help with myriad issues,” adds fellow Program Coordinator and Academic Advisor Cynthia Seltzer.

Physical Therapy student Kari Tut-trup, ’15 remembers vividly meeting her Bouvé Fellows at the start of her freshman year. “They got me through my first year,” Tuttrup said.

“They inspired me to continue on the path I was on by showing me what it meant to succeed in a challenging program. I knew that if they could

do it—and enjoy it—then I certainly could, too.”

In her sophomore year, Tuttrup became a fellow herself. “It is great to know that one piece of studying advice earns one of your students an A on an exam, or that someone finds their niche at the school from an organization you recommended.”

Philip Sheedy, PT ’18, is now one of her mentees. “Kari has helped me identify my goals in the program. She is doing a sports concentra-tion, which I want to pursue. She has been giving me good advice on how to make that happen.”

Pharmacy student Ryan Seagren, ’15 is also a mentee-turned-fellow and now a senior coordinator of the pro-gram. “My Fellows were so helpful and enthusiastic, and I wanted to give that back to students coming up behind me,” said Ryan.

“The Bouvé Fellows are indispens-able to the ‘Intro to College’ class because they have personal experi-ence,” explains Ban-An Khaw, semi-nar and pharmaceutical sciences professor. Michail Sitkovsky, a fellow seminar and pharmaceutical sci-ences professor, agrees. “The role of Fellows in this course is even more important than that of the professor; they are easily recognized by first-year students as peers.”

said John Merianos, P ’61. “He was determined to make his vision suc-cessful, and he did.”

The weekend celebration kicked off Friday afternoon with a panel discus-sion entitled “Opportunities for Entre-preneurs in Community Pharmacy,” sponsored by the Health Sciences Entrepreneurs (HSE), a group of alumni business founders who serve as mentors to fellow alumni and stu-dents looking to start businesses in the health care industry. Several alumni pharmacists shared with stu-dents the ins and outs of owning and operating a community pharmacy. The event also included the installa-tion of officers of the student chapter of the National Community Pharma-cists Association.

Festivities continued Saturday evening with a cocktail reception

followed by the Grand Celebration Dinner in the Curry Student Center Ballroom. Dr. George, P ’57, H ’98 and Margo Behrakis, Joseph, P ’70, MS ’71 and Nancy (Hale) Flem-ing, P ’71, and Dr. John and Evelyn Neumeyer, Ed ’78 were recognized by School of Pharmacy Dean John Reynolds and Bouvé College Dean Terry Fulmer for their lifetime commit-ment and dedication to the school.

“The School of Pharmacy has come so far in every possible domain, and we could not have done it without the involvement, support, and dedi-cation of many, particularly the six people on this stage tonight,” said Fulmer. “There are no words to ade-quately express the gratitude and appreciation the entire community feels for their transformative contri-butions of time, treasure, and talent.”

George and Margo Behrakis are best known for their generous gift of the Behrakis Health Sciences building which bears their names, but their support goes well beyond bricks and mortar. A graduate of the New Eng-land College of Pharmacy, George Behrakis enthusiastically embraced his alma mater’s integration with Bouvé and has been a dedicated alumnus who has supported scholar-ships and much more. (See Anniver-sary Scholarship Established, facing page.) John Neumeyer, beloved and distinguished former professor to many — including fellow honorees Joseph and Nancy Fleming—and Evelyn Neumeyer have established two scholarships in recognition of the school’s outstanding research and expertise in pharmaceutical sciences. Joseph Fleming is cred-ited with founding HSE, dedicating countless hours and business know-how to students and alumni in their entrepreneurial endeavors. Nancy Fleming, who describes meeting Joe as the “best find at Northeastern,” served as alumni outreach coordina-tor and spokesperson for the 50th Anniversary Celebration.

“We are so honored to be in such distinguished company,” said Nancy Fleming. “We are proud of what the school has become, and grateful for all it has done for our family.”

The weekend concluded with the annual White Coat Ceremony on Sunday in the Blackman Auditorium. The ceremony marks pharmacy stu-dents’ transition from the two-year academic coursework phase into the four-year professional practice

portion of the program. One hun-dred and forty-two students received personalized white coats from the School of Pharmacy in the presence of family, friends, and faculty.

“This spectacular weekend helped us pause to celebrate our rich his-tory and contributions to the pro-fession and to science, but also to look forward to a very bright future,” said Dean Reynolds. “Together with alumni, faculty, and students, we will sustain the School of Pharmacy’s trajectory of success and continue to shape the profession.”

The School of Pharmacy wishes to thank the following individuals and companies for their generous sup-port of the 50th Anniversary week-end: Todd, P ’92 and Stephanie Timbrook, CVS, Greater Lowell Pharmaceutical Association, RiteAid, Shaws/Osco/SuperValu, Stop and Shop, and Walgreens. Stephanie and Todd Timbrook, P ’92.

Thanks to a challenge gift of $250,000 from Dr. George, P ’57 and H ’98 and

Margo Behrakis, more than $1 million in scholarship funds have been raised in

honor of the School of Pharmacy’s 50th Anniversary. Dr. Behrakis, who chal-

lenged other alumni and friends to a dollar-for-dollar match, endowed a new

scholarship in his name that will provide both need- and merit-based aid to

pharmacy students.

“The School of Pharmacy has become a nationally known research institution

that remains steadfastly practice-based. It provides the best pharmacy educa-

tion possible, and I want to help deserving students be successful in this increas-

ingly important field,” said Behrakis.

Several other alumni met the challenge, either by making a gift toward already

established scholarships or to the

School of Pharmacy 50th Anniversary

Scholarship Fund. Bruno Mazzotta,

P ’64 made a leadership gift to help

students finance what he believes is an

excellent education.

“At the New England College of

Pharmacy, the importance of the phar-

maceutical trinity of accuracy, integrity,

and service was emphasized by seri-

ous and dedicated professors who molded and motivated our professional and

personal character. This excellence continues at the Northeastern University

School of Pharmacy,” said Mazzotta.

“On behalf of the entire school community, I wish to thank Dr. Behrakis and Mr.

Mazzotta for their generous lead gifts. We are also grateful to the many alumni,

faculty, staff, and friends who contributed to the 50th Anniversary Fund,” said

School of Pharmacy Dean John R. Reynolds.

Dr. John Merianos, P’ 61 and Gary Frazier, P ’81 also made major gifts to

support scholarships in the anniversary year. Many other alumni and friends con-

tributed as well.

“There is no better way to mark this milestone than by reaffirming our com-

mitment to students,” said Bouvé Dean Terry Fulmer. To contribute to the

Anniversary Scholarship Fund, contact Nan Wetherhorn at 617-373-8986.

What’s New?

HATS OFF

A Wise ChoiceDr. Lucia Matthews, MS ’94,

PhD ’99, recently released

a psychological self-help

book, written as a novel, that

teaches readers how not to

be overwhelmed by their emo-

tions so they can make better

choices in their lives. Harriett’s

Walk: How To Make Wiser

Choices For A Better Life uses

fictional dialogue between a

client and counselor to teach

a set of skills and chronicles

how Harriett, the heroine of the

story, uses what she learns to

control her feelings and walk

into the future she wants, not

the future she fears.

Dr. Matthews received her

doctorate in Counseling

Psychology from Northeastern

and is certified in Choice

Theory/Reality Therapy. She is

currently in private practice in

Rhode Island.

HSE Mentors Help Early Detection StartupPharmaceutical Sciences graduate Jaydev

Upponi, MP ’07, PhD ’12, and current gradu-

ate students Asanterabi Malima and Cihan

Yilmaz have been awarded $50,000 from the

National Science Foundation (NSF) and an

additional $10,000 from the D’Amore-McKim

College of Business Administration’s IDEA

program for their business venture, BIOLOM.

Malima, an electrical and computer engineer-

ing student, and Yilmaz, a mechanical engi-

neering student, teamed up with Upponi to develop a 0.25 millimeter chip that can

detect very low concentrations of biomarkers associated with colorectal cancer in the

bloodstream, potentially allowing for earlier detection of the disease. The technology

could also be used to monitor for recurrence of the cancer.

“First we coat nanoparticles with CEA-specific antibodies (CEA is a protein associated

with cancer). Then we assemble the nanoparticles onto the chip,” said Yilmaz of their

design, which the team originally called NUCHIP. The antibodies will bind to the CEA,

revealing whether levels are above normal. In comparison to the nanotechnology, current

screening methods are expensive, time-consuming, and require large blood volumes.

The new technology could also be applied to search for biomarkers like cardiac myosin

and troponin, proteins associated with myocardial infarction and other heart diseases.

The team is being mentored by the Health Sciences Entrepreneurs (HSE), a group of

50 Northeastern alumni and friends who have founded successful health sciences

businesses and who offer their expertise and advice to alumni or students looking to

start businesses in the industry. HSE was started in 2005 by Joseph Fleming, P ’70,

MS ’71, chairman of Infusion Ventures, and is open to alumni and students of any

Northeastern college.
