High Honor Collegiate Scholars (4.0 GPA) This award is given to
every full-time undergraduate student with 30 or more ISU credit
hours and a 4.0 GPA. We recognize students with a major in the Bayh
College of Education.

Stella A. Ringer Memorial Scholarship Established in 1982 by Dr.
James H. Ringer in honor of his mother, this award is given to an
undergraduate or graduate student preparing to work with the
hearing impaired.
Elizabeth Humphrey
Hannah Schlueter Memorial Scholarship Established in 1964 by
Professor Joseph Schick in memory of his mother Hannah Schlueter,
this award is given to the senior in Communication Disorders who
has achieved the highest GPA in the major.
Nicole Karrer
Cheryl Slaughter Memorial Scholarship Established in 1990 by family
and friends of Cheryl Slaughter, recipients of this award exhibit
the qualities of altruism, kindness, and sensitivity to the needs
of others.

Dr. Michele C. Boyer Legacy Fund Award Established in 2015 by
Professor Emerita Dr. Michele C. Boyer, this award encourages
competent, ethical, state-of-the-art professional practice in
graduate students in Counseling by helping them attend professional
conferences.

Merle M. Ohlsen Scholarship This scholarship is given to a
deserving graduate student in counseling or counseling
psychology.

School and Educational Psychology
Herman Becker Award for the Outstanding Doctoral Student in School
Psychology Established in 1966 by Dr. Herman D. Becker to promote
quality psychological services for children with disabilities, this
award is given annually to the outstanding doctoral student in the
School Psychology Program at ISU.
Raechel Erdman
Dr. Bonnidell Clouse Research Award Established in 2004 by alumni
and faculty members of the department of Educational and School
Psychology in honor of Dr. Bonnidell Clouse, this award is given
for research that emphasizes the application of a psychological
and/or educational theory to a problem in the classroom or other
educational environment.

Dr. Kenneth Walker Outstanding Educational Specialist Award
Established in 2003 by members of the faculty in honor of Professor
and Chairperson Emeritus Dr. Kenneth Walker, this annual award
recognizes an outstanding student in the Educational Specialist
program.
Abbie Jones
Educational Leadership
Dr. Alfred L. and Juanita R. Harding and Family Scholarship This
award is given to a student enrolled in the higher education
leadership doctoral program at Indiana State University, with a
career goal of working in college administration. The recipient
must be an Indiana resident, with preference given to students who
are current or former residents of Vigo or Sullivan counties in
Indiana or who have graduated from a high school in either Vigo or
Sullivan counties.

Leland D. “Bill” Melvin Award Established by members of Dr.
Melvin’s family at the time of his death in 1986, this award is
given to a recent graduate in the Educational Administration
program.

Mauri and Janice Modesitt Education Administration Scholarship The
recipient of this award must be a full-time or part-time graduate
student enrolled in the principal preparation or superintendent
programs in the Department of Educational Leadership and a Clay
County resident.

Fred A. and Joyce E. Snyder Award Established by family and friends
in honor of Drs. Fred and Joyce Snyder, the award is given to a
student who has completed a dissertation that adds signifcantly to
the body of knowledge in educational administration.

J. Fred Swalls Award in School Administration Established in 1979
by members of the faculty in honor of Dr. Swalls, this scholarship
is awarded to a deserving student in the School Administration
Ph.D. program.

Daniel T. Tanoos Education Leadership Scholarship Danny Tanoos,
proud graduate of Vigo County School Corporation and Indiana State
University, entered the feld of education in 1979. This award is
designed to defray tuition cost for a part-time graduate student
enrolled in the principal preparation or superintendent programs
who is employed by the Vigo County School Corporation.

Dr. Gregory R. Ulm Endowment in Education Leadership This award is
designed to defray tuition cost for a student entering the Ph.D.
Wednesday Residency program in School Administration. Recipients
exhibit excellence in scholarship and the attributes of a servant
leader.

Helen Layman Dix Memorial Scholarship This scholarship is awarded
to a deserving student who is a full-time junior or senior student
enrolled in the CIMT program. The award goes to a student who is in
good academic standing and who has fnancial need.

Wilburn T. Elrod Secondary Education Scholarship Established
in 1991 by Dr. Wilburn T. Elrod along with alumni, friends, and
members of the faculty on the occasion of Dr. Elrod’s retirement
after 28 years of dedicated service to Indiana State University,
his profession, and the Department of Curriculum, Instruction, and
Media Technology. The award goes to a graduate student in secondary
education, who has indicated an interest in, or desire to, improve
classroom management and discipline in public or private secondary
schools.

Joan Jacobs Award for Excellence in Secondary Education
Commemorating Mrs. Jacob, a 1947 alumna and assistant professor for
many years in ISU’s Laboratory School, this award honors an
outstanding undergraduate student enrolled in an all-grade,
secondary, or junior high/middle school licensure program.

Dr. David Pease Award for Secondary Student Teacher of the Year
This award was established by Dr. Pease’s sister, Ms. Evelyn Yoder,
in his memory. The award annually recognizes an undergraduate
student teacher for outstanding performance in student
teaching.

Van Til Graduate Student Award in Writing The award is presented to
a graduate student for an exceptional paper, research report, or
article related to education.

Elementary, Early, and Special Education
Mafalda Brooks Memorial Scholarship This scholarship was
established by Lela Meres Gill in memory of her dear friend,
Mafalda Brooks. The scholarship is awarded to a student majoring in
elementary education.
Emma Hurst
Dr. Vanita Gibbs Scholarship In 1999, Dr. Seth Cohen established
this scholarship to honor his former third grade teacher, Dr.
Vanita Gibbs, for her inspiration and innovation in the classroom.
Dr. Gibbs was a professor of elementary education from 1959 to
1992.
Katherine Hurst
Lela Meres Gill Memorial Scholarship This scholarship was
established by the estate of Lela Meres Gill. Lela M. Gill served
the teaching profession for 48 years. The scholarship is awarded to
worthy students majoring in elementary education.
Rebekah Goodrich
Pamela and Earl Godt Scholarship Established in 1988, this
scholarship is awarded annually, alternating years between the
Department of Electronics and the Bayh College of Education. Dr.
Pamela Terry- Godt served as the frst director of the Blumberg
Center and Earl Wayne Godt, II was an assistant professor of
electronic and computer technology.

Sylvia Laska Memorial Scholarship This scholarship was established
in 1987 by Professor Emeritus of Art, John Laska, to honor his
wife, Sylvia, a 1966 alumna, retired teacher and social activist
who held a deep concern for human rights.

William J. Linville Scholarship in Elementary Education This
scholarship was established by Jane Linville in memory of her
husband, William, a retired faculty member in the Department of
Elementary Education. It is awarded to an elementary education
major who shows both merit and fnancial need.

Israel H. and Amanda L. Love Memorial Scholarship Miss Clara M.
Love, a 1901 Indiana State University alumna, established this
scholarship in memory of her mother and father.

John R. Luce Endowed Scholarship This scholarship was established
in 2003 by a gift from the estate of John Robert Luce. The
scholarship is awarded by the faculty in the Special Education
program.
Shelby King
Ione Shaul Nehf Memorial Scholarship This award was established by
Christine Nehf Clark in memory of her mother, who attended Indiana
State Normal School and was a former teacher and principal. Mrs.
Clark served as both librarian and assistant professor of education
at the University School.

Edgar M. Tanruther Scholarship Established by Edgar and Evelyn
Tanruther at the time of Edgar’s retirement. Dr. Edgar Tanruther
was a professor of education and a director of elementary student
teaching.

Donald R. and Joyce M. (Mattice) Ottinger Award Established in 2002
by the Ottingers on the occasion of their 50 year ISU reunion
celebration, the award recognizes creative approaches in elementary
teaching.
Faith Schmitt
Linda Owens Parker Scholarship Established in 1984 by Dr. Willis
Parker in recognition of Dr. Linda Parker’s successful completion
of her Ph.D. in special education, this award is given annually to
an outstanding junior in special education who plans to be a
classroom teacher.

Norma L. Reynerson Davies The recipient of this award must have a
declared major in elementary education and must be committed to a
career in elementary teaching. The award goes to an incoming senior
who has a cumulative 3.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale.
Alyssa Wheeler
Mary E. White Elementary Teacher Award This award was established
in memory of Mary Emily Campbell White to recognize students for
outstanding performance in the elementary educator preparation
program. Mary White attended ISU in the 1890s and was an elementary
teacher for 16 years.
Cora James
Dr. Doris Williams Outstanding Student Teacher Award in Special
Education Established by alumni and members of the ISU faculty in
honor of Dr. Williams upon her retirement in 2002 after more than
30 years of service to ISU, this award is given to a student in
special education who has demonstrated performance excellence while
student teaching.
Tequilla Howard
Juliette A. Wilson Endowed Scholarship in Elementary Education This
award is presented to a freshman elementary education major at
Indiana State University. Preference is given to female students
with fnancial need, carrying on the dream Juliette Phillip Wilson
had for her own children and her family.

Blumberg Center for Interdisciplinary Studies in Special
Education
Fannie Blumberg Scholarship for Special Education Established by a
gift from the estate of Fannie Blumberg, an artist, philanthropist,
and author of children’s books, this scholarship is awarded
annually to students in special education or communication
disorders.
Tequilla Howard Olivia Strothers
Dr. William Littlejohn Professional Development Award This award
was established in honor of Dr. William Littlejohn, former director
of the Blumberg Center and professor emeritus in the Department of
Elementary, Early, and Special Education. The recipient is an
outstanding student in the Bayh College of Education and an active
member of the Student Council for Exceptional Children.

Bayh College of Education General Scholarships and Awards
A. Elwood and Juneth S. Adams Scholarship This scholarship was
established in 1982 by a gift from the estate of A. Elwood and
Juneth S. Adams. Dr. Elwood Adams had an outstanding career in the
feld of education for more than 44 years. He later served as a
visiting professor at Indiana State University.
Triston Pantone
Louis and Opal Adkisson Endowed Minority Scholarship This award is
given to an incoming minority student who has a high school GPA of
2.5 and who declares a major within the Bayh College of Education.
The scholarship is renewable for an additional three years.
Savannah Limcaco
Ray Asbury Scholarship in Education Students, friends, and
relatives established this scholarship in 1976 in honor of Ray
Asbury’s retirement as principal of Sugar Grove School. Mr. Asbury
is a 1932 alumnus of Indiana State Teachers College.
Brooke Frederick
Elisha A. Bourne Scholarship in Education Established in 2006 by a
gift from the estate of James Elrod, in memory of his grandfather,
Elisha A. Bourn, who attended Indiana Normal School in the 1870s.
The recipients must be juniors who plan to teach and reside in
Indiana.

Ruth Anna Bourne Elrod Scholarship Established in 2006 by a gift
from the estate of James Elrod in memory of his mother, Ruth Anna

Indiana.

mother Ruth Hanna Zenor, who attended Indiana State Normal School
and Indiana State Teachers College.

Lois Burdick to provide support for continuing education for
teachers. It is awarded to a graduate student in teacher
education.

from the estate of James M. Chestnut, a 1928 alumnus of Indiana
State Normal School, this scholarship is awarded to deserving
education students from Daviess County who plan a teaching career

Delta Kappa Gamma—Beta Omicron Chapter Scholarship Established in
1990 by members of the Beta Omicron chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma,
an international society of key women educators, this scholarship
is awarded annually to a junior or senior female student who
demonstrates outstanding promise in the feld of education.

Susie Thurman Dewey Scholarship in Education A distinguished
educator, Susie Thurman Dewey has been the recipient of the
Distinguished Alumni Award in 2001, as well as the Bronze Star for
her military service in World War II. This scholarship is awarded
to a student who has displayed exceptional academic performance in
the feld of education.

Patricia Drake Memorial Scholarship This scholarship was endowed in
2004 from the estate of Patricia J. Drake. This scholarship
supports students who are interested in teaching at the elementary
and/or middle school level.

Ray and Adelaide Hahn Memorial Scholarship Established by the Hahn
family in loving memory of their parents Ray and Adelaide Hahn,
this renewable scholarship is awarded annually to students who are
pursuing degrees in education and who are from families with three
or more children. All seven of the Hahn children attended ISU, and
all but one majored in education.

Esther P. Hamilton Scholarship This fund was established to provide
a scholarship or scholarships for students in the Bayh College of
Education who demonstrate both academic merit and fnancial
need.

Marvin Henry Legacy Scholarship Established in 2013 by Dr. Marvin
and Mrs. Ruth Henry and family, this scholarship is awarded to a
graduate student in good standing in the Bayh College of Education
with preference given to those with secondary graduate certifcates.
The recipient will demonstrate leadership possibilities in teacher
education.

Jessie N. House Memorial Scholarship This scholarship was
established in 1990 by the children of Mrs. House as well as by
family friends. Mrs. House was the former Jessie Mae Needham, who
married Wilson M. House. The Houses have a rich history in Terre
Haute and the Indiana State University community. The recipient
must be a graduate of a high school in Indiana or a surrounding
state.

Dr. Gail M. W. Huffman-Joley Scholarship This award was established
in 2002 by friends and colleagues of Dr. Gail Huffman- Joley,
former dean and professor of education. The award benefts
outstanding students from ISU PDS partnership schools who are
interested in pursuing degrees in teacher preparation.
Kamilah Kirkwood
Dr. Herbert J. Klausmeier Scholarship This scholarship was
established in 2003 by Dr. Herbert Klausmeier, who was a 1940
alumnus of Indiana State. Dr. Klausmeier was the founder of the
Wisconsin Center for Education Research at the University of
Wisconsin-Madison. He has received coveted awards and recognition
in the felds of education, psychology, research, and
leadership.

Hilda Maehling Memorial Scholarship Established in 1981 by a gift
from the estate of Hilda Maehling, the scholarship is given
annually to a student majoring in education. Hilda graduated from
Indiana State Normal School in 1915 and began her teaching career
in the city schools of Terre Haute.

Mae McCracken Memorial Scholarship This scholarship was established
in 2001 by the family of Mae McCracken to honor the values that she
exemplifed. The scholarship is awarded to a student from Vigo
County.
Brooke Biggs
J.D. Miller Leadership in Education Scholarship This scholarship
was established to memorialize J.D. Miller, who lost a battle with
cancer in 2009 while a student at Indiana State. An elementary and
special education major from Clayton, Indiana, he was a leader on
and off campus. This scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior
education major with proven skills as a leader in education.

Caleb Mills Memorial Scholarship Established in 1953 by Miss Helen
Condit, this scholarship honors the memory of her grandfather Caleb
Mills, second state superintendent of public instruction and an
outstanding leader in the establishment of the Indiana public
school system.

Elliott and Estelle Nelson and Family Scholarship Mr. Nelson, now
retired, was the president and owner of Modern Vending, Inc. His
wife, Estelle, taught school for seven years. This scholarship was
established as a way for the Nelsons to give something back to the
community in appreciation for the support they had received.
Taylor Smith
Madonna Owen and Linda Owen Scholarship Established by a gift from
the estate of Madonna Owen in 2005, the scholarship is awarded to
deserving women preparing for a career in education. Preference is
given to students in ISU band or choir.

Catherine Polson Education Scholarship This scholarship was
established by Catherine Polson in loving memory of her late
husband, Lawrence Polson. The scholarship is awarded to incoming
full-time freshman students majoring in education and is renewable
up to four years.

Wayne E. Schomer Scholarship Established by the Wayne E. Schomer
family, this scholarship honors his memory and service to ISU. Dr.
Wayne Schomer held various positions at ISU for more than 37 years,
including vice president of University Advancement from 1966 to
1974.

Otto J. Shipla Award Professor Emerita Shipla established this
award in 1986 to recognize outstanding performance in student
teaching. Dr. Shipla was a professor of education at ISU from
1956-1986.

Becoming a Complete Professional
Becoming a Complete Professional is the foundation of our Teacher

The Bayh College of Education Scholars to Teachers (BEST) program
is an umbrella program that supports scholars who have been
selected to receive one of two academic scholarships within the
Bayh College of Education and for Presidential Scholarship
recipients who are teaching majors within the College. The three
scholarships that make up the BEST Program are the Sycamore Teacher
Leaders, the Charlotte Boener Scholarship recipients, and the
Presidential Scholars.
Sycamore Teacher Leaders Begun in 2015, the STL are scholars who
are selected based on academic merit and the recipients’ dedication
to service. Students who accept the STL scholarship agrees to
participate in service and leadership projects, and the scholars
agree to student teach in a diverse student teaching placement
either in the U.S. or abroad. Ten Sycamore Teacher Leaders are
selected per year.

Charlotte Boener Scholarship This scholarship honors the legacy of
Charlotte M. Boener, former professor in the ISU School of
Education, who strove to instill a passion for science education in
elementary and middle school teachers. The recipients are
high-achieving students who are pursuing teacher education at the
elementary or middle level with an emphasis in science or
mathematics.

Presidential Scholars—from BCOE President’s Scholarships are
offered to an elite group of frst-year students who have
demonstrated outstanding academic performance in high school and
during an on- campus interview competition. Twenty awards are
presented university-wide each year.

Dr. Bradley V. and Dr. Tonya Christman Balch Faculty Development
Award This award was established in 2006 and is given to a faculty
member who wishes to share new knowledge in an educational
discipline. The award is for conference or presentation
expenses.
JaDora Sailes Amanda Solesky
R. W. Holmstedt Distinguished Professorship As a result of a trust
left in memory of ISU’s seventh president, Dr. Raleigh Holmstedt, a
grant is awarded to one member of the Bayh College of Education
faculty who has demonstrated a long and distinguished career of
teaching, scholarship, and service. The award recognizes seven
years or more of exemplary and extraordinary teaching, service, and
scholarship.
Yong Joon Park
Paul A. Kinser Faculty Development Award The recipient of this
award must be a member in good standing of the Bayh College of
Education faculty. The endowment is used for the purpose of
promoting the continued professional development of the
professoriate.
Anna Viviani
Dr. Nancy J. Smith Professional Award for Teaching and Mentoring
This award was established in 2015 to support the work of faculty
members who teach and mentor school psychologists and other
counseling professionals who serve children with special
needs.

Richard Willey Memorial Faculty Development Award The Richard
Willey Memorial Faculty Development Fund supports faculty
development activity that enhances the recipient’s professional
growth.
