“Honor and Remember” 107
th Annual Gathering - Episcopal Churchwomen
St. Mark’s Episcopal Church Lewistown, PA
Diocese of Central Pennsylvania
Province III November 5, 2011
The Cross represents our life in Christ and serving Christ in the world.
The Circle stands for the hope for wholeness in our lives and for others.
The Outflowing Lines from the Center depict the many works of the
ECW going out into the world. The Lines Intertwined with and coming
out of the Center of the Cross are our lives centered in Christ.
Episcopal Church Womens Prayer Almighty God, we pray that You will bless our work in
mission and ministry in the world. Help us to pray
fervently, labor diligently and give liberally to make known
the power of your love given through your son Jesus Christ.
Let us not forget the lessons from the past nor fear the
challenges of the future. Anoint us with your grace and
shine in our hearts as we reflect your light throughout the
world. Amen.

Current Diocesan ECW offerings to all Women:
Lenten Retreat – February/March/April, based on when Easter falls of each year – at Camp Hebron,
Halifax, PA This is a great time of focusing on God without the distractions of the secular world.
Cape May Retreat – September – in Cape May, NJ – offering both spiritual fulfillment and fellowship
in a beautiful setting with Eucharist on the beach, engaging speaker, compline, singing and the amazing
setting of being ocean front.
An Annual Gathering/Meeting – October/November - provides fellowship, sharing of ideas and an
opportunity for you to hold the Board accountable. Treasurer‟s reports, and minutes are filed.
The United Thank Offering – an important missionary arm of the ECW - a program by which a
connection is made between giving thanks and giving money, united praying and sharing of God‟s
blessings in our lives. Every penny collected goes to mission work through the process of grants. Each
Diocese is allowed to submit two grant applications a year. There are two suggested Ingathering dates
for collecting the blue boxes each year, the Sunday following Ascension Day, and the Sunday closest to
All Saints Day. These are only suggested dates and you may have an ingathering that fits your parish.
A Companion Relationship with the Diocese in San Paulo, Brazil - with Christina Winnischoffer,
president of the women‟s group in Brazil, we exchange ideas, offer intercessory prayer for meetings,
fellowship and a common interest in promoting women throughout all facets of their lives.
A Mission Objective – All groups of ECW throughout the Diocese are encouraged to support the St.
Barnabas Project in Harrisburg, to expand their program for at risk children after school and during the
summer while their parents are at work. This can be time and talents as well as monetary.

Annual President Report November 2011
As I write my last annual report I realize it has been over five years since the Bishop asked me to be the
interim president of the diocese. Little did I know how long God would call me to serve in this capacity.
There is no ECW in my parish. I wasn‟t sure I knew how to make a difference without some experience
and background, but managed to grasp the job quickly and run with it. We have wonderful support from
our Bishop, The Right Rev. Nathan D. Baxter and the Diocesan Staff. Many of our parishes have
thriving ECW groups while others struggle to find a new identity in today‟s changing world. I have
come across some great ideas throughout my time in the Diocese and Province that I would like to share
with you.
Episcopal Church Women are all of us, even if we don't go to meetings or have formal ECW
groups.
Honoring a member of your parish is an example of ECW supporting and holding up each other.
A bible study or a book club is a form of ECW meeting. (Who said you had to take minutes?)
Having the Diocesan President visit your parish is a good way to re-invigorate your group. I
have seen the success of this firsthand.
Some parishes have more than one ECW women‟s group. They each meet on different days and
times according to convenience and schedules. They then plan a quarterly or biannual gathering
for everyone. (Isn‟t it better to have two groups rather than none?)
No formal structure for the group is required. Two or three people can share leadership or it
organizing can rotate from one person to another each time your women meet.
If you have felt fellowship while working in the kitchen, is there some way to help younger or
other women enjoy it also? Invite them individually and/or personally?
Rather than try to get people to go to a meeting, is there a project you all could work on that
relates to a common mission objective?
If you already have a project many women in your parish work on - local food bank, Christmas
celebration, fundraising for youth mission trip - why not point out that this is Episcopal women
working together?
Successful ECW groups remember: 1/3 Outreach, 1/3 Inreach, and 1/3 Spiritual.
Take the time to reach out to each other in compassion, love and support with the intention of making
connections and building a community of women. We can do and have done extraordinary things
together with God‟s help. There are many fabulous women in our mist who carry out ‘Christ’s work of
Love and Reconciliation in the World, in the Diocese, Province, Nationally and Internationally’.
I have truly enjoyed being your diocesan president and my prayer is that all women have the
opportunities I have had to be enriched and blessed by other women! Thank you for the opportunity to
serve Christ through each and every woman in this Diocese!
Blessings, Amy Swiernik, ECW President (717)285-2036
Diocese of Central Pennsylvania, [email protected]
Our vision for all women of the Episcopal Church is that we become a vibrant blend of all ages,
coming together as a peacemaking, healing part of the Church. We aspire to be a God
spark* - shining and sharing the love of Christ. – National ECW Board.
Episcopal Church Women Board Meeting
Diocese of Central Pennsylvania
Province III Christ Episcopal Church, Williamsport, PA
November 13, 2010
Annual Meeting Draft Minutes
OPENING PRAYER: Rev. Anne Flynn
BUSINESS MEETING:
Minutes: Read and Motion, second and vote to Approve April 24, 2010, Annual Meeting Minutes as
revised at the August 14, 2010, Board Meeting. Clarifications were made to the wording and amounts
of donations to Haiti and St. Barnabas, as was the original intent of the motion at the April Meeting.
Read and Motion, second and vote to Approve August 14, 2010, Board Meeting Minutes as
presented.
Revised Constitution:
Article IV – Section 2: All officers shall serve for three years. Terms to begin January 1 the year
following the election, before the Triennial Meeting.
Article V – Section 1: The Annual Meeting of the ECW shall be held prior to November 30.
Article V – Section 2: The annual budget shall be adopted at the Annual Meeting, the fiscal year to run
January 1 to December 31.
Article VIII: Adopted as amended on November 13, 2010 at the Annual Meeting and replaces all
preceding Constitutions.
Revised By-Laws:
Article I – Section 4: Remove „Such officer shall be bonded.‟ Since we are under the Diocese tax
identification number, and audited during the Diocesan Audit this separate bonding is no longer
necessary.
Article V – Section 1: change „one year‟ to “in the year” in the sentence, “At the Diocesan Annual
Meeting, in the year preceding the Triennial Meeting, the Nominating Committee shall present a slate of
delegates to the Triennial Meeting in accordance with National ECW directives.”
Article X: Adopted as amended on November 13, 2010 at the Annual Meeting and replaces all preceding
By-Laws.
Motion, second and vote to Approve all revisions to the Constitution and By-Laws.
Treasurer Reports:
The November 10, 2010 Financial Report year to date shows net assets of $13,866. There is a mistake
on Province III Meeting line – the $145, should be added to the $362 below resulting in $507 President‟s
Expenses. Under Liabilities there should be added “Due to Triennial Certificate of Deposit (CD)” -
$2,000. Motion, second and vote to approve November 2010, Treasurer’s Report as revised.
Proposed Budget for 2011 shows expenses of $5,325. There is an increase in president and audit
expenses to reflect actual costs incurred in 2010. Motion, second and vote to Approve January 1,
2011, through December 31, 2011, Proposed Budget.
The 2010 Certificate of Deposit for Triennial has not been purchased yet – it will be purchased in
December 2010. The last of the three Certificate of Deposit‟s for Triennial 2012 should be purchased in
early 2011 to allow proper budgeting for Triennial and to maximize the amount of interest earned.
Motion, second and vote to Approve $2,000 to be put in a CD for Triennial 2012, during the first
quarter of 2011.
UTO: Bonnie Chambers presented Anne Flynn from St. John‟s in Carlisle with a certificate in
recognition of the $7,000 UTO Grant received for fencing around a playground to keep children safe.
The fence will allow the fitness program to be expanded with the additional safety measures in place.
UTO Grant requests for 2011 are due December 17th, 2010. There is a new process in place to submit
grant applications on-line. The procedures have changed so, if you are submitting a grant application,
contact Bonnie and she will help you navigate the process. Each Diocese is allowed one grant to be
submitted for a parish within the Diocese, and one grant for a companion relationship. It can be a parish
to parish relationship or Diocese to parish relationship. Contact Bonnie for full details and proper filing
of these grants applications.
Mission Project: St. Barnabas Center for Ministry in Harrisburg located at our own St. Paul‟s Episcopal
Church was voted as our mission project at the April Annual Meeting. Our time and talents as well as
monetary contributions are needed. For example: During the summer All Saints, Hershey served
lunches for one week of the program and worked with learning activities with the children. We can all
pitch in to make a difference in the lives of these at risk, inner city children. How will your parish help?
Guests: Meigan Chan, – Province III Representative to the National ECW Board - talked briefly about
the work of the National ECW Board and announced the 2012 Triennial is to be held in Indianapolis,
Indiana – July 5 -12, 2012. She encourages everyone to attend at least once.
Helen Whitson, – Province III ECW President - talked briefly about the decline of women who
participate in the ECW across the Province and would like help in increasing participation.
Margaret Gordon, – UTO Coordinator for the Diocese of Washington DC and
Beth Fitzpatrick, – UTO Coordinator for the Diocese of Delaware, also attended and contributed to the
discussions.
Nominating Committee: Wilma Johnson from the Northern Tier Convocation and Shirley Wagner from
the Lancaster Convocation will form the core of the Nominating Committee for elections to be held at the
next Annual Gathering in November of 2011. All offices will be open. The new Board begins
serving January 1, 2012. We also will be voting on delegates to the Triennial Meeting for 2012 –
we send four representatives, including the President and UTO Coordinator. Please consider
coming forward to take a position on the Board or recommending someone from your parish.
One more person for the nominating committee is needed from a different convocation than Wilma and
Shirley.
Annual Gathering Date: The Altoona Convocation will host next year‟s gathering on November 5, 2011
at St. Mark‟s Episcopal Church in Lewisburg. The theme will be “Honor and Remember” with the focus
on honoring and remembering women in your parish. Details will be forthcoming.
Business Meeting closed with the ECW Prayer.
PRESENTATION:
Reshaping Traditions: A packet of information was distributed with lots of information on
reshaping the ECW within your parish and within the Diocese. See packet for more information
or contact Amy for a visit to your parish for a personalized discussion. Each parish is unique but
there are basic tenants for each ECW to function at its best.

Treasurer’s Report
November 5, 2011
2011 has been an exciting year with both challenges and accomplishments. We continue to refine our financial operations in order to make the process easier and to free time and resources so Board members can focus on serving diocesan parishes and parishioners. United Thank Offering remittances are now sent to the UTO coordinator so she can track contributions and respond to inquiries in a timely manner. This year we will be sending each parish a summary of assessments and United Thank Offering remittances received during the year.
Results of operations through September 30, 2011: A financial report is included in your packet. Some highlights are:
Providing information about our mission and operations has significantly increased assessments from parishes. The Board is considering ways these funds may be used to further our mission.
There was a drop in attendees to the Lenten retreat at Camp Hebron, resulting in lower income and some related expenses. Not all expenses for the Cape May Retreat have been recorded.
The “Honored Women” luncheon has been added to the annual meeting. We anticipate the income will be about the same as the expense in this inaugural year.
$1,000 that was approved for the Haiti music program in 2010 was not paid until 2011. Because we are on a cash basis, it must be recorded as an expense this year.
Currently, income exceeds expenses by about $1,800. We anticipate that to decrease after adjustments are made to the retreat, annual meeting and administration expenses to approximately $1,000.
Proposed Budget for 2012: The Board has not approved a final budget so this is an estimate, based on anticipated results in 2011. For the first time, we are attempting to estimate income as well as expenses. We expect assessment revenue to remain stable, but income from both retreats and the annual meeting to increase with increased participation. Related expenses will also increase. The allowance for treasurer’s expenses is increased for one year so the new treasurer may purchase necessary software.
Respectfully submitted,
Cindy Mohr

United Thank Offering
Diocese of Central Pennsylvania Annual Report 2011 “Put gifts into the Blue Box with thanksgiving, prayer and generosity. Take blessings out of the box for grants to expand the Church’s faithfulness to God’s mission.”
Grant applications due to Bishop’s office – December 1, 2011
As many of us recover from the devastation of Tropical Storm Lee (and clear the snow and debris this week), we are reminded that many in the world face even greater challenges. So we drop some coins in our Blue Box in gratitude for the resources and support we have in our local parishes. United Thank Offering is the largest granting ministry of its kind in the Episcopal Church and has been working to fulfill this ministry for over 120 years. During the 2011 granting process, $4,754,452 in requests were submitted to the UTO Board while $1,634,526 was available to fill those needs. So, please continue to count your own blessings and drop a couple more coins (or bills) in the Blue Box. In 2011 the changes at UTO that were begun the previous year have continued. Grant applications are again filled out online and submitted directly, once the Bishop’s office has given direction and approval. The granting process for the 2012 Grants now has an earlier due date, which means a copy of your application must be emailed to the Bishop’s office before December 1, 2011. Do not hit the “submit” button until the Bishop’s office has said you should! You may have noticed that many materials are in short supply on the UTO website. This is temporary while the organization undergoes changes to its operations. In diocese, we now have a UTO web page. On the diocesan website (www.diocesecpa.org), click on Our Programs and scroll down to UTO or access it through the ECW page. This page will be the easiest way to check on key dates and addresses. You can even make a contribution using your smart phone! Be on the lookout for announcements in the future about new ways to “expand the circle of thankful people!” Thus far, Diocese of Central Pennsylvania has sent $10,702.21 to UTO, significantly less than in 2010. Please remit any funds you may have collected. (Forms are available here.) As always, every penny contributed goes toward the grant funding. All administrative costs are paid through other donations, ECW and the Episcopal Church.
I now have email addresses for thirty of the UTO coordinators. We are finding this makes communication much faster and economic. I will continue to work at contacting all parishes before the end of my term. I thank you for this life changing opportunity (and add more coins)!
Respectfully submitted,
Bonnie Chambers UTO Coordinator [email protected]

Episcopal Church Women
Diocese of Central Pennsylvania Province III
Convocation Reports November 2011
Southern Convocation
St. Mary’s Waynesboro… Held their fall rummage sale in early October and are preparing for their annual
election day lasagna dinner. They will be preparing Christmas baskets for shut-ins and organizing the annual
parish Christmas lunch. They have been getting together monthly at different restaurants for fun and fellowship.
All Saints-Hershey… Meet Wednesday mornings for a craft workshop making items to sell at their Christmas
and Easter bazaars. For the bazaars they make about 70 quarts of chicken corn soup. They also sell candy, as
well as prepare and serve luncheons or receptions whenever needed.
They have two knitting projects that are on-going. One involves knitting hats and scarves for the Seamans
Institute of New York and New Jersey, and the other is a Prayer Shawl Ministry for those in need of support.
St. John’s –York… No longer has a specific ECW, but the ladies are active in the life of their parish whether it
is serving on the Vestry or making prayer shawls. In preparation for their Divine Delights Freezer Sale, women
of the parish have been gathering on Saturday mornings to prepare the food. This is the 8th year for this project
and has raised over $40,000 used for their outreach program. They are getting ready for their Rummage Sale
which also supports outreach.
Some of the ladies are gathering Christmas cards to be sent to service men and woman serving overseas. They
have a “Sacred Stitches” group that makes prayer shawls and prayer cloths for parishioners who cannot get out to
church, and others in the community, as well as a book of the month group that select a book to read and discuss.
Of course these talented ladies come together to provide receptions throughout the year as needed, but especially
after funerals.
Church of the Transfiguration – Blue Ridge Summit (Calvary - Beartown) These ladies have Two ECW
groups. One is dedicated to knitting, where each lady decides what project she would like to work on. This can
include prayer shawls, newborn baby hats, chemo hats or personal items. The other group known as ECW
(Episcopal Church Workers) since anyone is welcome to help with the various projects. They provide boxed
Thanksgiving & Christmas dinners for their “Help Hotline”. Their outreach includes donations to Victim
Services, The Lunch Place (for the poor and lonely), Habitat for Humanity, Episcopal Relief and Development,
and Shoe Boxes for Operation Christmas Child to name a few.
Prince of Peace – Gettysburg… The Episcopal Church Women (ECW) of the Memorial Church of the Prince of
Peace have had a busy year in 2010 preparing for our bi-annual Christmas Bazaar. The Bazaar was held the first
weekend in December with gross receipts of more than $2,300.
Our Christmas Lunch at Hickory Bridge Farm on December 10th met with an unscheduled snowstorm, therefore
several women did not make the event but a great time was had by all. This year we will meet on Dec. 9th, 2011.
We met again in May of 2011. We voted to disburse our Bazaar funds on several church and community projects.
While we do not plan to hold any formal meetings until late spring, we will hold workshops at the church to
complete the ribbon project, replacing markers in both the hymnals and Books of Common Prayer, as well as
making name tags for all members of the parish and visitors. Peace, Dale B. Shade, President
St. Andrews – York… These women meet monthly the second Tuesday of the month. In December they
provide poinsettias, candy and small personal items and Bingo prizes for the residents of the Episcopal Home in
Shippensburg. They are busily getting ready for the annual parish Wine & Cheese event. They recently purchased
a new freezer for the kitchen, and hosted a wonderful reception when Bishop Baxter was present for
confirmations. Plans are being made for a trip to Middle Creek Wildlife Preserve, a “Beat the Winter Dulldrums”
party in February and sponsoring a special speaker for an evening in the spring who presents a program on
Centering for Prayer.
Respectfully submitted,

Episcopal Church Women
Diocese of Central Pennsylvania Province III
Convocation Reports November 2011
Lancaster Convocation
St. Paul’s Columbia… The women of the parish have been very busy again this year. We have assisted in many
church fund raisers – Easter egg sales, soup sales, and our annual Strawberry Festival. We have had two
rummage sales which generated funds to help pay for the medical needs of a child. This year, the women of the
parish will begin our first year of holiday cookie and candy sales.
We have hosted numerous hospitality events – the Bishop‟s Annual Visit, Homecoming, and St. Paul‟s Annual
Choir Festival. Many of our women are involved in the Columbia Food Bank which provides assistance to many
needy families in the Columbia area.
Respectfully submitted, Cindy Mohr

Altoona Convocation
There are eleven parishes located in the Altoona Convocation. St. Paul‟s in Philipsburg is quite a busy group.
They recently offered a luncheon Lenten series and continue to support the community with an offering to the
local YMCA‟s theater group and donations to the local food banks. The local retired community has use of the
facility to teach pie baking.
Respectfully submitted,

Although you may not have a formal group of ECW women, surely you have Altar Guilds, and Committee chairs
that could get together semi-regularly to correlate their ministries and report to the convocation representative or
Diocesan President to keep her abreast of your activities and ministries and to share those ministries with others
throughout the Diocese of Central Pennsylvania.

ECW Retreats Annual Report Fall 2011
Diocese of Central Pennsylvania Province III
The Episcopal Church of the Advent at the corner of Franklin and Washington Streets
In September 2011 the Episcopal Church Women‟s Cape May
Retreat entitled “The Ministry of Presence” was presented by
Rev. Canon Kate Harrigan from St. Paul‟s Episcopal Church in
Harrisburg. Created in the image of God, we are God's Beloved
Beings yet we live in a world where we are so busy "doing" that
we sometimes forget that God created us as "beings". The
Ministry of Presence reminds us that we are indeed God's Beloved Beings and in order to „Do‟ the work
God has given us we must first Be who God created us to be. Our greatest gift to one another may
simply be our „Ministry of Presence‟.
Always a dynamic leader, as the Dean of the School of Christian Studies, Kate encouraged all women to
come and celebrate our ministry as laywomen in the Body of Christ. Through stories, mediations,
activities and sharing each woman ‟found today‟, allowed each other to „let God and let Go‟, and
appreciated pets in a new way. The highlight of the weekend again, was Morning Eucharist on the
beach after breakfast Saturday. The Church of the Advent welcomed us to their Sunday morning
service. Fellowship abounded during the entire weekend, as we enjoyed a time of learning, reflecting, and
fun in beautiful Cape May New Jersey.
Next fall‟s retreat will be September 21st to 23
rd, 2012 with the Rev. Canon Robyn Szoke as
leader/speaker. Look for brochures on the Diocesan website, Diocesan Digest, and in your email next
year.
The 30
th Annual Lenten Retreat was held at Camp Hebron in Halifax, Pennsylvania, north of Harrisburg.
Approximately 15 participants attended “Lenten Indulgence: The Creative Ways of God” presented by
Rev. Rowenna Gibbon and Rev. Charlene Leigh-Koser. This year's ECW Lenten Retreat focused on the
rekindling of creativity - especially for those who feel they have no sense of creativity or have lost it - a
variety of engaging activities were offered that encouraged rest and play, respite from the burdensome
expectations we place on ourselves and a deeper relationship with God. Author, Julie Cameron, in her
ground-breaking book, The Artist's Way, has helped millions find their way back to their authentic,
creative selves where they can reconnect with God. "Every day we are pressured by silently oppressive
worldly work ethic: Do more, push harder, work through it, you can do better, be consistent, try harder,
just do it,..... And yet we are really only at our best when we are rested, not overly committed to things
that rob us of our creative vitality, and have indulged ourselves in those things that connect us to our
spiritual core. Cameron urges her readers to read, write, and through a variety of ways, rediscover their
God-given creativity; the conduit that directly connects us to our Creator.
Next year‟s Lenten Retreat is scheduled for March 21st to 23
rd, 2012. (Easter is April 8
th, 2012) Look
for brochures on the Diocesan website, Diocesan Digest, early next year.
Church Periodical Club
Province III
Annual Report 2011 The Ministry of the Printed Word
Founded in 1888, the Church Periodical Club (CPC) is a worldwide
“Ministry of the Printed Word.” An independent affiliated organization of the
Episcopal Church. It is the only organization in the Episcopal Church
providing free literature and related material, both religious and secular,
through grants. Books and printed materials are needed for many reasons: to
spread the Good News, to supply essentials for Educators, Physicians,
Technicians, various professionals, and to encourage literacy. CPC depends
entirely on voluntary contributions to carry out its unique ministry. The
Church Periodical Club operates at all levels of the church, national, provincial, diocesan and parish. Through the
national granting program, the grants are allocated worldwide, based on contributions available in two funds.
The National Books Fund (NBF) helps meet religious and secular needs by providing printed and audio-visual
material to individuals, organizations, and churches affiliated with the Anglican Communion. Grant applications
to NBF are processed twice a year, after receiving the endorsement of the Episcopal or Anglican Bishop of the
Diocese.
“Miles of Pennies” (MOP) is used for children only, pre-school to grade 12, supplying reading and educational
material, and providing shipping costs of recycled children‟s books. This is a wonderful way to spread the word
to the remotest corners of the world, especially to children in poverty stricken countries, who would never hear
the written word or learn about the Lord. Within the United States, grant applications to MOP are endorsed by any
active CPC Representative. Applications from outside the continental United States are processed by the local
Diocesan Anglican or Episcopal Bishop. The Miles of Pennies Committee distributes the contributions in the
MOP fund year round.
The Church Periodical Club met at Virginia Theology Seminary in Alexandria - October 13-16.
National Books Fund granting took place and a little over $24,000 was granted for U. S. and foreign
seminarians, prisoner ministries, and others. Bibles, cd/videos, hymns and other educational materials
were provided free to those without the means to purchase the “printed word”.
May 6, 2012 – the first Sunday in May is designated as CPC Sunday – these funds will be used for 2012
granting.
We covered information for the CPC Triennial to be held - June 30th
to July 4th
, 2012 right before
General Convention and Triennial.
Thank you to all who contributed donations or sponsors aid in granting funds for the national Books
Fund, Miles of Pennies and Operational/Administrative Fund.
We discussed the 2012 triennial preparations that will include our 2012 annual meeting, finding
funds for 2012 National Books Fund grants, for attendances (parish and diocesan or alternate
delegates), support for the Energy Lift, Exhibit Hall and selling of Quilt Tickets.

Book of Remembrance Episcopal Church Women Diocese of Central Pennsylvania
Province III
The Book of Remembrance, as a project, was conceived in 1940 by Mrs. Robert T. McCutcheon.
The book was hand-bound and illuminated, by Father William Bumstead, Rector of St. John‟s,
Westfield. Individual pages were designated for each parish and mission in the Diocese of Central
Pennsylvania. The book was a gift of Martin Withington Clement in memory of his mother, Alice
Virginia Withington Clement of St. Matthew‟s Church, Sunbury. The case for the book was made by
Marshall Augustine and given by him and Mrs. Augustine (Mrs. McCutcheon‟s daughter) as a loving
tribute to Mrs. McCutcheon, the sponsor of the Book of Remembrance project.
+ The Book of Remembrance, kept at St. Stephen‟s Cathedral Church, Harrisburg, is placed on the altar
during the Annual Diocesan Episcopal Church Women‟s Meeting at which time all names entered
during the year are read.
+ The Book of Remembrance is a magnificent memorial book in which are listed the names of the
faithful departed women by parishes and mission.
+ Any devoted churchwoman of the Diocese who has been concerned with some phase of the church‟s
work can be so honored.
+ There is no charge to have a name entered into the Book, however it has been customary to send a
contribution with a name. Such contributions have ranged from one dollar to twenty-five dollars or
more. The lack of funds must not prevent a name from being entered.
+ It is suggested that such contributions come from the parish ECW, or any other organization, friends
and relatives in lieu of flowers, or on an anniversary of death.
+ The contributions are added to the capitol account of the Book of Remembrance Fund which is
invested by the treasurer of the Incorporated Trustees of the Diocese of Central Pennsylvania. Each
year the interest from this fund is added to the Diocesan ECW United Thank Offering. None of the
funds are ever used for the expense of the Book.
+ Each name and contribution, if any, is acknowledged promptly by the custodian of the Book of
Remembrance with a card to the ECW of the respective parish or mission, and a card is sent to the
family of the deceased if an address is available.
+ Complete and accurate records are kept in index card file showing the name, dates of birth and death,
and number of years in the parish of each woman whose name is entered.
The Book of Remembrance is available to all parishes and all women within the Diocese of Central
Pennsylvania. The names of our deceased Sisters in Christ will be entered into the Book, kept at St.
Stephens Cathedral and read at the Annual Meeting. All parishes are encouraged to submit names and a
small donation to honor your women. I will be happy to send cards upon request.

Episcopal Church Women
Diocese of Central Pennsylvania Province III
National ECW Board Report – October 2011
The Episcopal Church women of Province III met in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware for our annual meeting
Friday /Saturday, September, 30th
and October 1st. There were 60 women from ten of the thirteen
dioceses of Province III registered, not including the ECW of Rehoboth Beach who hosted us in fine
style. The ladies of all Saints Church and St. George‟s Chapel (which has a history that goes back to
1708), opened their hearts and with much pride and much love prepared and served us incredible meals.
As our secretary, Sonya Riggings-Furlow stated, “they prove the statement “this is not your
grandmothers‟ ECW “can be changed to “there is nothing wrong with your grandmothers‟ ECW”. They
are a flourishing group of women of all ages that work together on projects, outreach ministries in the
community, and fundraising. Their annual Christmas Shop at the Rehoboth Beach Convention Center
attracts as many as 3,000 people each year. There they sell wonderful handmade items of which they
had a table of samples for us to see. 2011 is their 49th
year!
“We were indeed blessed to have held our meeting in this place that sees Episcopal Church Women
living out their baptismal vows with stamina and vigor and where the mothers and grandmothers who
instilled the ministry of the ECW in us are still actively involved with the young women and girls.” (A
quote from one of our participants.)
Rev. Barbara Seras, our Province III Convener and ECW Chaplin, led our program, “Finding Stillness
Amid the Demands of Everyday Life”. We were encouraged to find and use prayer beads and historical
religious items of concentration, saying prayers, even words and repeating them as in saying the rosary.
We ended with a walk on the beach – focusing on the beauty of white sands and crystal blue water as
well as the perfect weather - God‟s gift to us on a glorious day.
Friday‟s program ended with a trolley ride from All Saints Church to St. George‟s Chapel for a
wonderful dinner of homemade soups (good enough for recipes be asked for and given), salads and
desserts. The ECW president told us the activities they were doing and we learned they have three
active groups of ECW women between the two congregations and how they work together. We left
full (after seconds and thirds) with a police escort to cross the country road to the 1708 St. George‟s
Chapel where we had Compline surrounded with the original candelabras of wax candles.
At our business meeting Saturday morning each Diocesan President was asked to give a report of her
diocese. Amy has copies if anyone would like to read them. Three women of Pittsburgh were there and
were excited to learn that the National Board will be in Pittsburgh in January. They have expressed the
honor and excitement they feel that Pittsburgh is chosen and have asked that we allow them to have us
attend church with them on Sunday and to have dinner for us one night.
Anne Gordon Curran, UTO, placed Blue Boxes on each table and left with a bag full of heavy boxes.
We also were able to contribute $500.00 each to the ministries of the ECW of each congregation and
$200.00 for the youth group they have formed. We were dismissed with this admonishment:
“We need to be extravagant with our love and care toward others”.
We then elected officers for the next 3-year term: Amy Swiernik, Diocese of Central Pennsylvania –
President and alternate to the National Board;
Bonnie Chambers, also of Central Pennsylvania – Vice President;
Dorothy „Dottie‟ Arthur, Diocese of Maryland – Province Rep to National Board;
Beth Fitzpatrick, Diocese of Delaware -UTO and Cindy B, Dillon of Diocese of Southern Virginia –
UTO Alternate;
Existing Officers are: Debbie Wiles, Diocese of Pittsburgh – treasurer and Sonya riggings-Furlow,
Secretary.
Gloria Brown, Diocese of Washington continues as CPA Coordinator.
Meigan Chan, Province Rep to National Board spoke on Triennial, encouraging attendance, and sharing
all that is being planned. Much interest was generated and many questions were answered, including
groups deciding who will attend and who will be willing to drive and/or share rooms.
Our two-day meeting continued with various groups and ministries breaking out into meetings with the
newly appointed officers. The Presidents, UTO, CPC, etc. in separate groups. I was invited to join the
presidents‟ meeting where they had the chance to compare and ask questions about what is working and
to share ideas and discussions concerning involvement in common mission and the accessibility of
younger women (Amy Swiernik is 47, with a husband, two teenage boys and a career), and spoke of
how she became the president and the women who encouraged her to fill a gap. Each diocese has
declared that they have new inspiration to work towards the strengthening and expansion of ECW.
Some already have plans.
We ended with Holy Eucharist and the installation of officers. The Right Reverend Wayne P. Wright
was our celebrant and spoke simply of “the value of, and need for ECW. No matter how many
female priests and deacons are ordained, the work of ECW is needed, is valid and necessary in the
church”. As we left the sanctuary, Amy, our new President, gave each of us a seashell, the words „Be
Still‟ painted by children on each and blessed by the Bishop.
We have also set our 2012 Province Annual Meeting for the end of April in Martinsburg, WV, to piggy
back with the Province Synod, joining with the entire synod, as has been done in each triennial year.

United Thank Offering
Province III UTO Coordinator
Annual Report 2011
The United Thank Offering Board has been attempting to fulfill the responsibilities inherent in the process dictated by General Convention 2009 – the INC055 Study Committee was formed by the Executive Council of the Episcopal Church to look at IRS requirements for holding and investing ministry funds in DFMS. The report deadline was December 2010 and received with much enthusiasm – it will be published for all to read at a later date.
Since May 2010 there have been two Face to Face Training sessions for the Diocesan Coordinators. The UTO is a relationship ministry which carries forward God’s call to us to take into the world the “thanksgiving” we receive at the Eucharist.
In December 2010 UTO materials were moved to a new site in Atlanta, Georgia. We are in the process of updating materials but you can still order by mail, phone, or email as referenced on the UTO website.
Province III had 6 grants funded totaling $151,692 of the 11 submitted. There were 4.7 million dollars in grant requests with only 1.6 million dollars to grant! Receiving grants were the Dioceses of Delaware, Easton, Maryland, Pittsburgh and 2 in Virginia (one for Tanzania).
The Board granted partially or fully 59 grants in 2011, 39 were domestic, 12 foreign and 8 diocesan companion/partnerships.
Granting applications for 2012 were put online October 1st, with a deadline of January 15, 2012 for submissions to the National Board.
UTO - new mission statement: “Put gifts into the Blue box with thanksgiving, prayer and generosity. Take blessings out of the box for grants to expand the Church’s faithfulness to God’s mission”.
Give thanks with grace and a small gift every day. Someone else will thank you.
Respectfully submitted,
Anne Gordon Curran, Province III UTO Coordinator to the National UTO Board [email protected]
Vision: We will significantly impact the lives of women and children because of Christ’s Love.
