Honor a Nurse pg. 1
Congratulations to all nurses recognized by our generous donors
between January 1, 2020 and August 31, 2020.
Names are alphabetical by an honored individual’s last name and an organization’s first. Following the list of honored nurses (pgs. 1-34) is a list of tributes paid in memory of a nurse or
someone who experienced nursing excellence and care (pgs. 35-51).
Thank you to our donors for recognizing each of these nurses while making a philanthropic donation to support the ongoing work of the American Nurses Foundation. With your support, we continue to
transform the health of the nation through the power of nursing.

Kristen Hanzlik Your Family
Kristen consistently goes above and beyond for her patients as well as co-workers. Once a homeless, high school drop-out, she has utilized her past hardships to encourage others; showing all that your past does not define you and you are never alone. Kristen is an inspiration to many, just talk with anyone who knows her. In addition to working countless hours as a nurse manager, additional hours as a detox nurse, a single mother, and a daughter caring for her parents as she almost lost her father this past year due to health issues; she also completed her MSN in PMHNP nursing. Kristen shared her story of hardship, faith, and finding blessings in any situation while going through her father's illness and it touched the lives and hearts of many--she was changing lives. She then started the Lighthouse Devotions project single-handedly which provides cinch bags with toiletry items, socks, water, and love to the homeless and those struggling. During COVID-19, she was buying food for multiple families who were struggling, handed out all of her toiletry bags, and continued encouraging others to show love and grace. She does not choose to take credit or be in the spotlight. Rather, she points out gratitude in anyone she encounters for things that most of us do not even notice. She truly is an inspiration and a shining example of the meaning of nursing. I strongly encourage you to speak with her.....You would not be disappointed.

Donna Huneycutt RN, BSN, CIC Nancy Ladd
Donna Huneycutt embodies the finest attributes of the Professional Nurse. She is first and foremost client centered in her role as Director of Nursing for Atrium Healthcare In Charlotte, North Carolina’s Jesse Helms facility. In my long career as a Registered Nurse and having worked in many Nursing capacities, I have never worked for anyone more devoted to her Patient's and staff as Donna is. How many DON’s appear on the job at 5:00 am every morning, ready to actively help out the nursing staff with anything that is needed to be done to enhance patient care? I’ve never seen one! Then she spends the rest of her day until and over 12 hours performing her duties as DON as well as continuing to help out in any capacity to keep the facility functioning to the highest of levels. (Including grabbing a broom if need is there!) When a hurricane and a winter storm prevented many staff from traveling to work, Donna slept over and worked along with the rest. The facility kept up and running as usual under Donna’s leadership. When Covid-19 appeared, it was Donna who implemented our patient and staff

It will be a good thing for her I believe, because her unrelenting devotion to her profession would otherwise eventually be detrimental to herself and her family. What will we do without her, we all sadly wonder? Donna Huneycutt is a Nurse to be honored, as I have never known any other more worthy.

I am a retired nurse and have great admiration for all nurses and other health care workers, engaged in the monumental effort of caring for Covid 19 patients. A poem in honor of all nurses What I am learning about anger Is that my whole body convulses In sobs and fury as I run, Listening to the radio. Nurses lacking protection are fired For requesting more. Collapsing After sixty hour weeks, fearful of Infecting their loved ones at home. Nurses tending to endless dying Patients, no family members to Soothe them. Humans ushered from this life With care and exhaustion. Hearts break.
