There were 220 weanlings sold over

the two days, averaging $34,155 (down seven per cent year on year), with

the median sitting at $20,000 overnight. The clearance rate was 76 per

cent.

The three sales, held at Inglis’ state-of-the-art Riverside Stables, were

the first conducted as live auctions since the Covid-19 pandemic struck

and were held with the premises closed to Victorian participants, whose

state grappled with the rapid spread of the deadly virus.

The Australian Weanling Sale figures were boosted by the late addition

of a strong draft from Victoria’s Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm which

included the $280,000 Not A Single Doubt sibling to the stakes-performed

sprinter Legend Of Condor.

The filly, one of 16 weanlings to make $100,000 or more, usurped an

Exceed And Excel (Danehill) colt who fetched $260,000 on Wednesday as

the sale’s highest-priced foal.

A colt by Written Tycoon (Iglesia), who was offered by Woodside Park

Stud, also sold for $180,000 yesterday after being bought by Binalong

Bloodstock.

The honour of selling the highest-priced lot brought to an end a

turbulent and emotional few weeks for Lauriston Thoroughbred Farm’s

James O’Brien, who was the leading vendor by average at the sale, after the

recent death of his respected father Kevin and the fact he had to contend

with the off-again, on-again nature of the sale for Victoria-based sellers.

“I’m ecstatic, over the moon, emotional, very proud of the

achievements of today. What a day,’’ O’Brien said.

“We were jumping in a car Friday to sell up there in Sydney but we got

blocked on Wednesday, so everything changed.

“We had to find staff, organise travel, accommodation, who could

offload the horses once they got to Sydney, all the logistics while trying to

let Victorians know they had one day basically to do on-farm inspections

here in Victoria before the horses left and everything else.”

The filly was one of a number of last-minute supplementaries as

a result of the cancelation of the Great Southern Sale, with Lauriston

Thoroughbred Farm selling all ten of its weanlings offered yesterday. The

draft averaged $69,900.

“Karis Clarkson ran our team for us at Riverside and she did an

outstanding job, as did all the staff, who had never seen these weanlings

before until the weekend,” O’Brien said.

“It really took my stress to a new level. The foals are born on your farm, you

raise them, get them ready for auction and come to the grand final. It’s like we’ve

pulled a hamstring three days out and can’t play. It really was distressing.

“But to come out the other side as leading vendor, all credit

goes to my team here on the farm, they put a lot of effort in and the

feedback I was getting daily from Karis and her crew at Riverside

was exceptional, so thank you to everyone who helped us achieve

these great results.’’

Agent Suman Hedge, who was bidding

from hotel quarantine in Sydney, combined for a second time at the sale with

prominent owner and breeder Steve Grant to secure the top-priced filly.

He relied on Rob Petith, who oversees Grant’s Silverdale farm in the

NSW Southern Highlands, as well as Milburn Creek’s Scott Holcombe to

provide him with feedback after inspecting her at the complex.

“They were adamant that she was quite elite and the pedigree was

there as well,” Hedge said.

“Because of the circumstances,

we did a fair bit of due diligence by

talking to a number of people who

had seen her.

“We lent on Inglis as well and

they were very forthcoming that

she was a really early, strong, agile

type and very much in the mould

of the sire. That’s the kind of filly

that’s going to be attractive to the

market.”

A sister to ATC Kindergarten

Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) runner-up

and Skyline Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m)

placed Legend Of Condor, the filly

is the fourth living foal out of the eight-time winner Rhodamine (Success

Express). She was catalogued as Lot 343.

While the intention is to reoffer the filly at next year’s yearling sales,

most likely at Magic Millions, Hedge believes some of the risk was

mitigated by the fact that the filly’s pedigree held a degree of residual

value.

“When you have got a horse like that you’ve got a few options up your

sleeve with what you do with her but certainly the intention will be to sell

her,” he said.

“Not A Single Doubt’s also been such a good stallion and every day we

are reminded how good he is.

“The fact that he’s been pensioned now and that they’re not making

them any more, they are just going to be so valuable. You’d expect that he

will make an impact as a broodmare sire later on, but this horse has got a

good profile for racing, too.”

O’Brien was pleased the market backed up his opinion of the sales

topper.

“She’s an outstanding type and was from the outset,’’ he said.

“We’ve always felt she’d be popular come sale-time so all credit to

Suman and Steve and the team, I’m confident they’ll get a great result if

they on sell or keep her to race.’’

Hedge and Grant also bought a Deep Field (Northern Meteor) filly on

day one for $100,000 from Edinburgh Park Stud.

Mihalyka looking for lightning to strike twice with Pancho’s half-brother

Earlier in the session, Louis Mihalyka made a triumphant return to the

Riverside Sales ring to buy the Russian Revolution (Snitzel) half-brother

to his Laurel Oak Bloodstock-owned stakes winner Pancho (Dissident) for

$150,000.

Not a noted weanling sale participant, Mihalyka made an exception

yesterday to ensure the Sledmere Stud-consigned colt would wear the

same red, white and green Laurel Oak colours as his sibling.

The agent had the backing of the syndicate who race the Chris Waller-

trained rising four-year-old.

“I go through the catalogues and look for opportunities either for

something that I’d like to buy as a yearling and if then I have clients who

are interested in buying a weanling and putting it back through a sale with

me as a potential buyer, then I buy for them,” said Mihalyka at Riverside

Stables, his first visit to a sales ground since the Inglis Premier sale in

Melbourne in early March.

“In this particular case, I actually asked the Pancho owners if they

wanted to buy the horse now. If we don’t put him through a weanling sale

it’s probably going to be $15,000 to get him to a yearling stage, so we will

be paying that much for this colt as a yearling as what we paid for Pancho

as a yearling.

“Similarly, he’s by a first season sire (as Pancho was), but this time the

mare’s a bit more proven, so we

think it’s good value.

“We’ll put him aside, wait

patiently and then race him.”

A Sledmere Stud homebred,

who was catalogued as Lot 322,

the colt is the third foal out of

the juvenile-winning Group

3-placed Novel Dancer (Written

Tycoon), making him the half-

brother to Listed winner Pancho

and an unraced two-year-old

Book Launch (Smart Missile).

Trained by Mark Newnham,

Book Launch was retained to

race by Sledmere Stud and the gelding made his first public appearance

on Monday in a Warwick Farm barrier trial when fourth behind Jet

Propulsion (Rubick).

“We’ve been good supporters of Russian Revolution, we believe in the

stallion and he’s a nice colt,” Sledmere’s Royston Murphy said.

“We came here with the idea of bringing a nice colt to show what Russian

can do. We are very happy with that result, so it’s nice to see the stallion shine

here at the sales as well as on the track.”

There was a $150,000 reserve placed

on the highly regarded colt and Murphy admitted he may have realised

more had it not been for the Covid-19 crisis.

“We all realise the sales are probably down a little bit. He was a horse

that four months ago we thought we might have got a little bit more for but

we came here to try and meet the market and we’re very happy with that

result,” he said.

Meanwhile, Pancho, who was purchased by Mihalyka for $165,000 at

the 2018 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale and has won three of his

11 starts and more than $400,000 in prize-money, is nearing a racetrack

return.

“He’s in work and he’s only about ten days off trialling and he’ll resume

in August. We did go the high road with him at the end of his three-year-

old season,” he said.

“He’s only won a Listed race but ended up running fourth in the

Hobartville, near the tail in the Rosehill Guineas and sixth in the Randwick

Guineas and he’s only about a Benchmark 90 horse so we can go back to

just winning races with now and taking him through the grades.”

Mihalyka also revealed yesterday that connections rejected lucrative

offers from Asia for the rising four-year-old gelding.

He said: “Chris is very happy with him. We had an offer from Hong

Kong and I asked Chris, ‘what would you do?’ and he said don’t sell which

is what we’d decided anyway, so I take that as a positive on how he is going

“Being a Dissident, we think he will get better as a four-year-old.”

Jazcom Thoroughbreds’ Colin

and Meagan Branthwaite, who sold

a Toronado (High Chaparral) colt for

$180,000 at the Scone Yearling Sale

on Sunday, were the leading buyers

at the Australian Weanling Sale by

number of lots at 16.

Binalong Bloodstock was

strong at the top of the market,

taking home four weanlings for a total of $450,000.

“The horses are here for us to buy, there’s good quality in our market,’’

Colin Branthwaite said.

“I like to cover a lot of angles and have a lot of chances and try to cash

in on whatever one comes good, rather than put all my eggs in one basket.

“I could tell from doing the inspections there were a lot more nice

horses here. The horses are here and I won’t buy them if I don’t like them

but I liked a lot of horses here.’’

Mike O’Donnell of Fairhill Farm was rewarded for committing his foal

crop to the sale and was leading vendor by aggregate. He sold 23 weanlings

for a total of $858,000, while Coolmore also sold 23 lots for $823,000.

O’Donnell said: “We can’t get away from the fact Covid is an issue

we are all dealing with but the past 48 hours have been exceptional,

considering the times we’re in, and the Inglis staff have been unbelievably

good to make this happen.www.magicmillions.com.au

“I had expectations that I didn’t want

to think about so we’re very happy with how this has turned out for us.

“Everyone that could be here, was, and those that couldn’t, they were

all represented, and as a vendor that’s all you can ask for.’’

Written Tycoon (Iglesia) ended as leading sire by average (for three

or more sold), with his progeny averaging $100,000. Russian Revolution

topped the averages (for three or more sold) at $75,000 on the first season

sire table, while Hellbent was second with his progeny averaging $71,000.

Inglis manager of bloodstock sales and marketing Sebastian Hutch is

aware of the importance the company played in ensuring a live auction was

held in July, traditionally a quiet period on the Australian sales calendar.

“I think over the last two days we have turned over in excess of $7.5

million - it’s a very significant amount of money - and again we had in

excess of $9 million on Sunday. In three days, there was in excess of $16

million, so it’s not something we’re complacent about,” he said.

“It’s repeatedly stressed the importance of keeping the wheels turning

and we continue to try and find every possible way that we can do that.

“The industry’s been very much advantaged by the fact that racing’s

continued during this period and, similarly, we’ve been able to keep the

sales going.”

One aspect that pleased the auction house was the willingness of the

buying bench to participate in the sale even if they were not able to attend.

“It is something that you can never necessarily master, but it’s something

we’ve worked really hard on and that is trying to establish relationships with

people to facilitate them doing business in absentia,” he said.

“That’s been necessitated by the circumstances, but we have really

doubled down our efforts to offer the best service to our buying patrons

to try and make the experience as satisfying as we can possibly make it.”

No Melbourne Gold inspections at OaklandsInspections for the Melbourne Gold yearlings

that were due to take place at Inglis’ Oaklands

complex from Monday will no longer take

place, due to the worsening Covid-19 situation

in the city. The Melbourne Gold Yearling Sale

was already moved to Inglis’ digital platform

but physical parades were scheduled to take

place next week. However, on the advice of

the Hume City Council and Victoria’s health

authorities, the parades have been cancelled.

Instead, Inglis encourages buyers to attend on-

farm inspections where possible. Bidding on

the Melbourne Gold Yearling Sale will begin

today and will begin closing next Thursday at

10am.

Krone to be withdrawn from MM National SaleAfter a strong campaign in Brisbane, Krone

(Eurozone) will be withdrawn from the

Magic Millions National Sale later this month

and will instead race on for Tony Gollan.

Krone, who joined Gollan after racing in

Melbourne for Mick Price and Michael Kent

Jr, has recorded two stakes placings this

preparation, finishing second in the Helen

Coughlan Stakes (Listed, 1350m) and the

Sapphire Stakes (Gr 3, 1630m). She will aim

to boost her record when she steps out in

tomorrow’s Glasshouse Handicap (Listed,

1400m) at the Sunshine Coast. "Krone is one

of the few mares in my stable staying with me.

I have lost count of how many of mine are at

the sale," Gollan said. "I know she has won

only twice but only two of her 19 starts have

not been in stakes races.”

Sixties Groove takes out Grafton CupBrisbane Cup (Gr 2, 2400m) winner Sixties

Groove (Sixties Icon) added the Grafton

Cup (Listed, 2350m) to his record yesterday,

setting a modern-day weight-carrying record

in the process. Saddled with 61 kilograms, the

Kris Lees-trained gelding was given a stellar

ride by Jason Collett, who saved ground

from near the rear before switching out and

storming home. He grabbed The Lord Mayor

(Rock ‘n’ Pop) to win by a half-neck with

Carzoff (Zoffany) third a further length away.

"It was a great ride. He had a wall of horses in

front of him and he threaded the needle and

got there when it mattered," Lees said. "I will

freshen him up and probably aim towards the

Metropolitan."

Newitt to make Melbourne homeCraig Newitt will make a permanent move from

Tasmania to Melbourne as of Monday. "I'm

on the boat Monday and I will be relocating

permanently," the 35-year-old jockey told

Racing.com. "I just did two months in Victoria

and had pretty good success and had pretty

good feedback from a lot of trainers so they

suggested I would be more than welcome

to come back. I only really came back (to

Tasmania) to tidy up a few personal things back

here."

Snitz out of KosciuszkoEarly favourite for the $1.3 million The

Kosciuszko (1200m), Snitz (Snitzel), has

been ruled out and will instead head for

the spelling paddock. The Matthew Dunn-

trained Snitz, winner of the Takeover Target

Stakes (Listed, 1200m) in May, started second

favourite in Wednesday’s Ramornie Handicap

(Listed, 1200m) at Grafton but faded to finish

ninth behind Signore Fox (Exceed And

Excel). After that disappointing performance,

Dunn informed stewards that he believed

that the five-year-old had come to the end of

his preparation and would spell, ruling him

out of the October feature for country-trained

horses.

Front Page new favourite for country race

With Snitz withdrawn from The Kosciuszko,

Geoff Duryea-trained stablemates and

siblings Front Page (Magnus) and News

Girl (Magnus) are first and third favourites

for the rich feature. Front Page, who won

the A R Creswick Stakes (Listed, 1200m) at

Flemington last month, is the $4.50 elect

with TAB ahead of defending Kosciuszko

champion Handle The Truth (Star Witness) at

$7, with News Girl sharing third favouritism

at $11 with Lord Von Costa (Von Costa De

Hero) and Two Big Fari (Walking Or Dancing).

Magnus (Flying Spur), the sire of both Front

Page and News Girl, is responsible for 22

individual stakes winners and stands at Sun

Stud for a fee of $15,400 (inc GST) in 2020.

Dunn to relinquish country statusMurwillumbah trainer Matthew Dunn will not

be able to start his horses in country-trained

features, including The Kosciuszko, with the

handler instead opting to maintain a Sydney

base that he began due to Covid-19 biosecurity

protocols. Dunn will saddle up Rothenburg

(Rothesay) in tomorrow’s Highway Handicap

(1400m), but that will be his final Highway

Handicap runner for the next 12 months.

"Racing NSW has made a decision to exclude

us from country races for the time being and

that's something we respect," Dunn told Sky

Sports Radio, having sent a number of horses

to Sydney recently. "I can't expect my owners to

fork out $1,000 in travel costs and not even have

a run in Sydney.”

Neasham to take out own licenceAnnabel Neashan, the Sydney-based assistant

trainer to Ciaron Maher and David Eustace

since 2018, is set to become a trainer in her

own right with the 29-year-old applying for

her license for the 2020-21 season. “It’s a very

exciting opportunity for me,” Neasham said.

“I’ve worked for Ciaron for nearly four years

now, including the last two seasons in Sydney.

It’s been a great experience and a real learning

curve, and now I’m ready to crack on and go

out on my own. Ciaron is right behind me and

has been very supportive. He’s been a great

boss and mentor, and I couldn’t have got to this

point without him.”

Callander new NSW Trainers’ Association chiefThe NSW Trainers’ Association yesterday

announced that media personality Richard

Callander would step into the role of its

chief executive. Callander, who came to

prominence on defunct broadcaster TVN,

has been working for Sky Racing and Racenet

in recent months. NSWTA chairman Richard

Pegum said that Callander was the right fit for

the organisation, which represents trainers

right across the state. “Richard has grown up

in racing understanding the industry from

the ground up. The board will support him in

driving the association’s vision of delivering

better conditions for all participants,” Pegum

said. “Richard’s love of racing has always

been evident in his broadcasting and media

commitments. With the backing of our

members and the board we are confident

Richard is the person to deliver positive

outcomes for trainers across the state.”

Alligator Blood hearing date setAn inquiry into the positive swab returned by

Alligator Blood (All Too Hard) when he won

the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas (RL, 1400m)

has been set for July 23. David Vandyke will

face Racing Queensland stewards after the ‘B’

sample confirmed the presence of the banned

substance altrenogest or Regu-mate. Majority

owner Allan Endresz has threatened to take

legal action if Alligator Blood is disqualified,

while stewards have also taken legal advice.

Alligator Blood is expected to be confirmed as

the third horse locked in for the $15 million The

Everest (1200m) in the coming days.

Qld prize-money levels to be restoredRacing Queensland has announced prize-

money for Brisbane’s metropolitan meetings

will return to pre-Covid levels from August

1. Despite the majority of prize-money levels

being maintained during the global pandemic,

RQ reduced Saturday metropolitan races

from $75,000 to $65,000 when it introduced

designated racing regions. Its traditional winter

carnivals were also abandoned, with selected

features run at significantly reduced prize-

money levels. “The Queensland racing industry

has navigated a particularly challenging

period,” Queensland racing minister Stirling

Hinchliffe said. “With restrictions beginning to

ease, it is pleasing to see prize money returned

to pre-Covid levels.”

Lundholm disqualified for four monthsDubbo trainer Clint Lundholm has been

disqualified for four months and fined $500

after a stewards inquiry from Rosehill in late

May was completed yesterday. Lundholm

was questioned at Rosehill that day after

oral syringes were found on a float used to

transport his three runners to the city track.

He initially denied knowledge of the syringes,

but admitted to stewards later that day that

he had presented false evidence when first

questioned. He pled guilty to two charges

of providing false evidence and possessing

syringes on course. For misleading stewards,

he was disqualified from yesterday until

November 9, while he was fined $500 for

possession of the syringes.

NEW ZEALAND

Dez out to defend crownTrainer Simon Wilson has welcomed the

announcement that the Winter Cup (Gr 3,

1600m) will take place next month, with the

handler preparing defending champion Dez

(Zed) for the race. “It is good to see that the

Winter Cup is back,” Wilson said. “I will just

have to see how the first couple of races go

to see if we can get him to hit some form. We

will play each start as it comes, but if we can

get there that would be great.” Dez will return

at Wanganui today over 1600 metres, with the

eight-year-old to carry 60.5 kilograms. “He

has been in work a while, but he will certainly

need the run,” Wilson said. “It is going to be a

heavy track and he will need a run or two to

get going.”

Marsh team ramping upStephen Marsh has his bases covered this

weekend as the only trainer in New Zealand

to have runners at all three gallops meetings

in the country. The Cambridge trainer has two

maidens engaged at Wanganui today, six in

action at Riccarton and four runners accepted

for the return to racing at Ellerslie tomorrow.

While the stable's attention will be spread

around the country, Marsh was excited to

return to racing at Ellerslie. "I can't wait to get

back racing at Ellerslie again and we've got a

nice team heading there," he said. "Appellant is

a classy filly and she's come up really well. This

looks a nice race to kick her off in and I think

she'll race really well. She should have a good

season ahead of her. Ritani should sprint well

fresh and for Ludus, this race might be a bit

short of her best but she's coming up well and

she should be hitting the line well.”

sent out as favourite after finishing second in

a Churchill Downs allowance at his previous

near the rail, making steady ground all the

while. At the line, Shared Sense held a three-

length margin over Major Fed (Ghostzapper)

with Necker Island (Hard Spun) a further half-

length away in third. Street Sense, who served

If recent history is any guide, then

Western Australian galloper Gatting

faces a monumental task to repeat his

Eastern seaboard debut in the Group 1

Maybe Diva (Craiglee) Stakes win in tomorrow’s

Group 1 Underwood Stakes at Caulfield.

Not only does the son of Hard Spun have

to defy the usually huge odds against longshot

winners repeating, he’d become just the third

horse in 30 years to complete the double; 25

have tried and only Weekend Hussler (2008)

and Northerly (2002) have been successful.

Furthermore, none the past ten Craiglee

Stakes winners has managed to win another race

during the spring which is verily dumbfounding

and must cast some doubt over its Group 1 status

in a Melbourne carnival which, ridiculously, has

six Group 1 races from 1600 metres to 2040 metres

in about as many weeks.

In contrast, the Group 2 Feehan Stakes

— won this year by Homesman — has been a

much better portent of things to come through

the balance of the spring carnival.

Six of the past ten Feehan winners have

won again in the coming weeks. The exceptions

include Rekindled Interest and Whobegotyou,

who were later placed in Cox Plates, and Magic

Consol who didn’t race again that year.

Four of the past five Underwood Stakes

winners have come via the Feehan including,

of course, Homesman who won last year after

finishing second in the Moonee Valley race and

he looks a superior horse in 2019.

Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman won

the 2017 Underwood with four-year-old mare

Bonneval [who’d won the Feehan] and they

saddle another four-year-old, this time male,

in The Chosen One — who looks the principal

danger to Homesman.

The follow-up form of major race winners

is something of a fascination and generally less

impressive than you might think. Examining

the two major races at Caulfield last Saturday is

interesting.

Begood Toya Mother was a fast and

spectacular winner of the Rupert Clarke Stakes

albeit with a “fired up” Iconoclasm providing

him with some unexpected cover.

Begood Toya Mother is now expected to be

spelled. Moment Of Change, a low weighted

Rupert Clarke winner like Begood Toya Mother,

is the only victor in recent memory [certainly in

the past ten years] to have had an immediate

break and he returned to run second to Black

Caviar in the Group 1 Lightning Stakes and then

went on to win a brace of Group 1 races.

Trust In A Gust and Stratum Star are the

only Rupert Clarke winners, in the past ten

years, to score again that spring - taking the

Group 1 Toorak Handicap and Group 3 Coongy

Handicap respectively.

Similarly, last weekend’s Group 3

Naturalism Stakes has produced just two

subsequent springtime winners in the past

decade; Jameka who went on to win the Group

1 Caulfield Cup and December Draw who won

the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes before failing in

the Caulfield Cup.

Lindsey Smith has pulled off

a remarkable training feat by

managing to rejuvenate the

once retired Black Heart Bart

(Blackfriars) to win his sixth Group 1 race and

second Underwood Stakes (1800m) - three

years on from his first victory in the Caulfield

feature.

Western Australian Smith took over the

Warrnambool stables once owned by Black

Heart Bart’s disqualified trainer Darren Weir

and was asked by the horse’s owners to attempt

to resurrect the nine-year-old gelding’s career.

Smith conceded that he was not overly

confident that Black Heart Bart would make

it back to the races until an encouraging

Cranbourne barrier trial effort last month.

"Before he trialled I started to doubt, but

then he trialled well," Smith said.

"His first race was good and then his second

run was plain, but we thought getting him up to

the 1800 metres would be good as he wouldn't

be chasing all the time.

"It's a good result." Continued on page 2>>

MORNING BRIEFING

Dunn gets job doneon RenewalWayne Hawkes believes the key to Renewal’s

Listed win was Dwayne Dunn not panicking

despite being last and a long way off the leader

Zoustyle. "He had a terrible run in transit but

the biggest thing was Dwayne didn't panic,"

Hawkes said. "He just saved it to the last little

bit and he hit the line well." Zoustyle’s trainer

Tony Gollan was ruing the fact that his smart

sprinter missed the stakes win by such a narrow

margin. "It's a big learning curve for him. It's his

first trip away and this was his first time racing

the Melbourne way of going,” Gollan said. "I

think it's important if I can just keep him in his

right grade I can keep him progressing along.

We won't aim too high I don't think at this

stage. And I think if we come back this time

next year we're going to have a bona fide Group

1 horse." Morning Briefing page 12 >>

Black Heart Bart ($101) held off last

year's winner, the $2.50 favourite Homesman (War Front), to win by a

short neck.

Fellow Warrnambool-trained veteran Gailo Chop (Deporvito) ($26)

was one and a half lengths away in third.

The Blackfriars (Danehill) gelding ran eighth first-up in the Memsie

Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) behind his new stablemate Scales Of Justice (Not A

Single Doubt), before running 11th in last week’s Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes

(Gr 1, 1400m) behind Begood Toya Mother (Myboycharlie).

"Even though those two runs might have looked a bit plain, he was

warming up and I've been happy with him," jockey Brad Rawiller said.

"Today, the whole way through the run I was thinking 'geez, we're

going to be in this'."

It was Black Heart Bart’s first win since the 2017 Futurity Stakes (Gr

1, 1400m). He was retired by Weir and his owners almost 12 months ago

after finishing well back in last year’s Toorak Handicap (Gr 1, 1600m).

An emotional Rawiller, the long-time rider of Black Heart Bart, was

delighted to see the gelding return to Group 1 winning form.

It also capped Rawiller’s own comeback from a broken neck which

almost ended his career, having been kept on the sidelines for nearly six

months after being seriously injured last October.

"I've won a Golden Slipper and a Caulfield Cup and I never looked like

getting teary, and I'm nearly in tears," he said.

"It's just amazing. I can't put it into words. Since coming back from my

broken neck it's been a long road.

"At the end of the day I haven't had much to look forward to as far as

rides for the spring and Black Heart Bart was always just my sole focus.

"I've been really happy with how he has been coming along.

"Last week after the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes when I was asked about

him, I said 'he lit the fire today'. But you've still got to see it.

"I'm still overwhelmed myself, to be honest, even though I thought he

could win today."

Nature Strip (Nicconi) staked his

claim for a potential shot at The

Everest (1200m) when silencing

his doubters with an impressive

victory in the AJ Moir Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m) at

The Valley last night.

The Chris Waller-trained gelding

harboured plenty of criticism after his last

start in the Concorde Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m)

when he failed to settle on the front end.

However, he showed he is a bona fide Group

1 horse with an impressive win in the $1

million sprint.

Ridden by James McDonald, Nature Strip

began well from the inside barrier and was able

to hold the inside advantage to eventually lead.

The track record holder over the course

and distance from last year's McEwen Stakes

(Gr 2, 1000m) Nature Strip kicked strongly

around the turn and was able to hold off a

gallant Miss Leonidas (I Am Invincible) by a

Everest-bound filly Sunlight (Zoustar)

closed strongly late to finish the same distance away in third with Ian

McEwen Stakes winner Faatinah (Nicconi) another short-head further

back in fourth.

Waller admitted after the race that the horse gets a lot of negative

attention, but this win might put a stop to the bad press.

"He's a popular horse," Waller joked. "We seem to get more criticism

with him than we ever got with

another certain horse [Winx]

who was probably our last Group

1 winner here.

"That's racing, everyone has

got their opinions. He's a good

horse and today he stepped away

well. James didn't panic he just

got there gradually and it was a

good race.

"You think punters get

frustrated, well owning a horse

and training a horse when you're

running in these types of races,

it's a bitter pill to take when you

don't quite get it right.

"So I think it's a good reward to everybody and I hope the punters had

something on as well and got a bit back from last start when apparently I

did everything wrong."

Waller hopes Nature Strip secures a spot in the $14 million Everest at

Randwick on October 19 and the gelding will now head to the Schillaci

Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m) at Caulfield on October 12 - the winner of that race

will represent the Melbourne Racing Club in the $14 million sprint a week

later.

"I don't think 1200 metres is a problem," Waller said. "I'd say we'll just

see what unfolds in the next few days. If he doesn't get an invite for The

Everest I guess the Schillaci Stakes is the logical choice."

Meanwhile, trainer Shaun Dwyer said Miss Leonidas ran a great race

while Sunlight's co-trainer Tony McEvoy could not hide his delight over

the mare's performance.

McEvoy said he would run Sunlight the Gilgai Stakes at Flemington,

two weeks before The Everest at Randwick.

"I'm pumped," McEvoy said. "I feel like I've won the race.

"The risk was the 1000 meters tonight and that's all that cost her the

race."

Passed in for $90,000 (reserve $120,000) at the 2016 Inglis Melbourne

Premier Yearling Sale, Nature Strip (5 g Nicconi - Strikeline by Desert Sun)

took his record to 11 wins and two placings from 18 starts for prize-money

of $1,879,285.

Victorian industry participants

who are currently undertaking

quarantine ahead of the

Magic Millions National Sale

on the Gold Coast will be allowed to enter

Queensland despite the government banning

residents from the southern state from

travelling there.

It is understood that those who have

already been out of Victoria for an extended

period will be spared from the new state

border ruling, which was yesterday issued by

Queensland premier Annastacia Palaszczuk,

ahead of the scheduled reopening at midday

today.

Agents Sheamus Mills, Damon Gabbedy,

Suman Hedge and Baystone Farm’s Dean

Harvey are among those who headed interstate

once it became clear Victorians would not be

allowed into Queensland without serving a

two-week isolation period.

New Zealand agents Paul Willetts and

Bevan Smith, as well as fellow Kiwis Steve Davis

and Marcus Corban, gained entry into Australia

earlier this week and are also undertaking hotel

quarantine.

Hedge was this morning into day eight

of his own quarantine at a Coogee Bay hotel

in Sydney, with another six days to complete

before he heads to the Gold Coast for the

National sale.

“The view at the moment, and the

information that we’ve got, is that I will be fine

because I will have completed the 14 days,”

Hedge told ANZ Bloodstock News.

“We’ve just got to run some paperwork and

make sure that there is a very clear delineation

that we have been out of Victoria for the 14 days

… but it’s one of those things, if tomorrow you

get a phone call and they say no then you have

to be ready for anything.”

Vendors and buyers are set to arrive on

the Gold Coast next week ahead of seven days

of selling, which comprises three days of race

fillies and broodmares, two weanling sessions

and two days set aside for the Magic Millions

National Yearling Sale.

BY DAVID MORGAN | HKJC_RACING

Zac Purton returned a favour at

Happy Valley late on Wednesday

night to keep Tony Cruz in the

frame for the champion trainer

title.

With front-runner Ricky Yiu enduring

an evening of misfortune and his closest

pursuer Francis Lui forced to settle for a pair

of seconds, third-placed Cruz closed the gap

when Purton steered Golden Spectrum (Dutch

Art) to success in the finale, the Class 3 Conduit

Handicap (1800m).

The nine-race action ended with Yiu static

at the top of the premiership on 64 wins, one

ahead of Lui, and Cruz on a creeping 61 with

only two meetings – 20 races – left in the season.

“Tony picked this horse out for me after his

last run to try and help me and as it turned out

I could be helping him,” Purton said, having

completed a double to extend his advantage

in the jockeys’ premiership to a practically

unassailable eight wins.

“It might be too late for Tony but he’s still

going to come strong and his horses are always

there to win – he certainly knows how to handle

them and get the best out of them so you can’t

underestimate him.”

Top-weight wasn’t enough to anchor

Golden Spectrum (131 pounds); Purton got his

mount rolling at the 500-metre point, grabbed

control of the race off the turn and held the late-

closing Lightning Steed (California Dane) by a

length.

Four and a half lengths behind was Yiu’s

Toycoon (Turffontein), a luckless fourth,

having lost roughly the same margin with a

stuttering break from the gate. That followed an

unfortunate incident at the start of the previous

contest, when Yiu’s Eternal Harvest (Smart

Missile) was withdrawn behind the stalls.

Purton might have the champion jockey

title in the bag already but he showed no signs

of easing off and initiated his brace with a front-

running win on Nextmodel (Stratum) in the

Class 4 Hatton Handicap (1000m). The four-

year-old, having his fourth start since switching

from the Peter Ho stable, was able to work to

the lead without too much pressure from gate

12. The bay boxed on to a first career win by two

and three quarter lengths.

Whyte gains an Xponential brace

Douglas Whyte’s sixth career double took

him to 42 wins in his first season with a trainers’

licence and the former 13-time champion

jockey is having no regrets about hanging up

his racing saddle.

“I thought I would miss the riding a lot

more but I’m not at the moment, I’m enjoying

watching. Night’s like tonight make a big

difference,” he said after Xponential (Equiano)

followed Happy Ichiban (Nicconi) into the

winner’s spot.

“I’m very fortunate that I’m able to ride

them in their work and assess them and fix

them to a certain extent. It’s been a very good

learning curve, but more than anything I’m

enjoying it like you cannot believe; just being

around horses and working with them, it’s one

of my passions.”

Xponential was a surprise 47/1 winner on

debut at Sha Tin back in December and has

taken a further six starts and a first outing at the

Valley to figure things out and follow-up. The

four-year-old flicked his ears and was clearly

having a look around when he hit the front in

section one of the Class 4 Kotewall Handicap

(1200m), but did enough to hold on by three-

quarters of a length under Antoine Hamelin.

“He’s taught me a lot in the sense that

first-up he won unexpectedly, there was pace

on and he was at the back sleeping and didn’t

know what he was doing, hence the reason he

hit the line well – it was more like a barrier trial

for him that day,” Whyte said.

“After that, there was a lot more pressure

on him and more expectation on him to deliver

next time and suddenly we started to ride a race

on him and put more pressure on him, and

he wasn’t ready for that. He’s a very immature

horse, so I’ve taken my time, I’ve taken blinkers

off, I’ve switched tracks with him, brought him

back to 1200 metres, and it’s worked the oracle.

“I think 1200 metres is well short of his

distance,” Whyte added, “but he enjoys the

speed of the 1200 and hence the reason why

I’ve brought him to Happy Valley.”

Whyte kicked off his brace in the opener,

the Class 5 Pok Fu Lam Handicap (1650m),

with Happy Ichiban. Vincent Ho drove the

three-year-old to a dour first victory at the ninth

attempt, wearing first-time blinkers.

“Mentally, he’s just needed racing and

time,” the trainer said. “After his last run, where

he was three-deep on the dirt, I learned that

night that he just can’t handle pressure. He’s

just too big for his own body and he can’t

handle it, he’s only a three-year-old.

“I went back to the drawing board and

played around with him – he’s his own worst

enemy in that he has a boy’s mind and a man’s

body. If I hadn’t put the blinkers on he’d have

been second; I put them on just to help Vincent

out first run at Happy Valley, to get him to

position and travel, and Vincent said when he

got to the front he still had a good look around.”

Ho nailed his own brace when he delivered

the Frankie Lor-trained Supreme Plus (Nicconi)

right on the line to pip Fox Cheunger (Hussonet)

in the Class 5 Po Shan Handicap (1200m). The

win denied his regular ally Lui a much-needed

success that would have taken him to the top of

the trainers’ premiership.

Earlier, Momentum Happy (Dubawi) won

section two of the Class 4 Kotewall Handicap

(1200m); the Jimmy Ting-trained Hong Kong

International Sale graduate forged on under

Derek Leung to hold off Lui’s Shining On

(O’Reilly) by a length.

Wind flies for WongVictor Wong hit the mark on his first ride

for 11-time champion trainer John Size, as

Wind N Grass (Lawman) flew home to peg the

Yiu-trained Little Bird (Starcraft) in the aptly-

named Breezy Handicap (1200m).

“Mr. Size talked really calmly before the

race, he doesn’t make any jockeys nervous, he

gave me easy instructions to follow and I felt

confident when I went out,” the five-pound

apprentice said.

Wind N Grass earned his first win at start 13,

having shown glimmers of promise previously.

“When he came out of the gates, I felt he

was a really calm, strong horse and he didn’t

disappoint me. At the turn I could feel he was

taking me into it; I only had one target to catch

and he did that pretty easily, he finished off

really strongly.”

Caspar Fownes and Karis Teetan teamed to

carry off the Class 3 Babington Handicap (1000m)

with Explosive Witness (Star Witness), who

opened his Hong Kong account at the tenth try.

Teetan made it two wins thanks to the

Dennis Yip-trained Murray’s Partners (Towkay)

in the Class 4 Lyttelton Handicap (1650m).

Hong Kong racing continues with the

season’s penultimate fixture at Sha Tin on

Sunday.

MAIDEN OF THE WEEK| 19 |

Almost a decade ago, Smart Missile

(Fastnet Rock) and Shared

Reflections (Umatilla) were

among the best juveniles of their

crop, carrying the Gooree Park red and black

to victory in the Todman Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m)

and the Sweet Embrace Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) in

2011.

Five years later, they combined in the

breeding barn with the end result being Smart

Image, a winner on debut in the Sky Racing

Active Plate (1200m) at Warwick Farm on

Wednesday.

Sent off as equal second favourite behind

Godolphin’s stakes-placed colt Beyliks

(Lonhro) on the back of a string of eye-catching

trials, Smart Image

missed the start

by a length and

was headstrong

early under Kerrin

McEvoy.

Settling sixth of

the eight runners,

almost four lengths

off a moderate

tempo set by

Beyliks, Smart

Image still looked

green throughout,

which bodes well

for his future.

Tracking up

behind the lead pack, McEvoy brought Smart

Image through three off the fence at the 300

metres and he chased resolutely. Beyliks kicked

on strongly, but Smart Image levelled up in the

shadows of the post, getting the bob in to win by

a nose over Beyliks.

In another promising sign, the pair pulled

right away from the rest of the field, with

four and a half lengths back to Free State

(Headwater) in third.

“He’s a nice horse. He’s got a future,” co-

trainer Peter Snowden said. “He’s still got a bit

to learn but he won and he’s only half there.

He’s got a lot of improvement to come.”

McEvoy added: “That was a really good

effort. Through the first part he was having a

good look at them. I was lucky a few of them

went out around the corner and I was able

to get up and improve on the back of Beyliks,

getting the split when we needed it.

“I had to rush him a little bit but fair play

to him, he did a great job. I’m really pleased

with how he came through it and he’ll learn a

lot from that.”

It was a reunion of the Redzel (Snitzel)

connections, with McEvoy - Redzel’s regular

rider - scoring his first win in the Triple Crown

silks since the two-time Everest (1200m) winner

was retired earlier this year.

Shared Reflections, who was purchased

from Gooree Park by the ‘Newstar Partnership’

that comprised Australian studs Newgate

Farm and Kingstar Farm as well as American

behemoth WinStar Farm in 2017, has produced

four named foals for four winners, including

well-performed former Hong Kong galloper

Lucky Hero (Northern Meteor).

Her Smart Missile colt - now Smart Image

- was sold at last year’s Magic Millions Gold

Coast Yearling Sale for $100,000 to Triple Crown

Syndications.

She has a Capitalist (Written Tycoon)

yearling who was withdrawn from both the

Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale and

the first round of the Inglis Australian Easter

Yearling Sale before he was purchased by

Hawkes Racing for $80,000 at last weekend’s

Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale Round 2.

John Moore HKJC

| 20 |

BY DAVID MORGAN | HKJC_RACING

John Moore sits at the open window. His

elbows rest on the worktop, his hands

cup binoculars in a steadying grip and

his eyes study a horse galloping head-

on towards his elevated position. He lowers

the Zeiss glasses, tilting them away casually

in his right hand; his left hand takes hold of a

stopwatch and clicks. The gelding whisks away

to his left, its hooves cutting and flinging clouds

of dark dirt as it sweeps around the track’s right-

hand curve.

Moore is in his corner on the first

floor of the Sha Tin trainers’ stand. It’s been his

morning perch since 1985, a prime spot with a

direct view up the dirt track’s finishing straight.

From this vantage, he has called out countless

instructions to work riders; he has watched

Beauty Generation’s (Road To Rock) bullyboy

bravado and Able Friend’s (Shamardal)

amiably belligerent daily pause; and he has

held court – when the ‘internationals’ arrive

each December, Moore’s corner is ever a hive of

visitors, old friends chatting and agents angling.

His work-watching routine doesn’t deviate

much: he parks his blue-trimmed white bicycle

by the running rail, takes a leather folder from

the front basket and unhooks what looks like

a black zip-up washbag from the handlebars;

he crosses the turf course, ascends the narrow

switchback stairs to his familiar berth, opens

the little bag and unpacks binoculars, pen and

stopwatch.

“It’s the same kit as when I started; the only

difference is that I have this phone now, too, but

I still use the stopwatch. I might be the only one

here who still times them for themselves; I want

to know straight away, so I know what they’ve

done when I’m looking at them back at the

stables,” he says, “I don’t want to have to wait

for the Jockey Club times.”

He copies the numbers from the handheld

clock’s digital display onto a sheet of paper

placed on the left side of the folder.

“He’s a workaholic, he’s a neatness freak,”

says Douglas Whyte, the 13-time champion

jockey-turned-trainer who observed Moore

closely before setting up his own stable. “But

more than anything,” he adds, “it’s his timing,

especially with the big races; he gets a horse on

song and gets him to blossom at the right time.”

Moore first clocked horses one morning

52 years ago when, at age 18, his feet took their

belated maiden step on to a racecourse. That

day set the counter on a span that has taken

him to horse racing’s pinnacle; Hong Kong’s

best-known trainer, a seven-time champion,

the city’s big-race maestro and the handler of

champions, the one with the most wins on the

board and stakes money in the bank.

But, on July 15, his time will run out;

rules are rules, and, at age 70, the Hong Kong

Jockey Club’s compulsory retirement will

take effect and his Hong Kong era will end.

Moore, who bridges right back to the months

leading into Hong Kong’s professional dawn,

will pack up his safari suits, panama hats and

ready soundbites, and depart for Rosehill

Gardens racecourse in Sydney, not too far

from where it all began in an old gypsy

caravan at Randwick.

The accidental trainerRiding horses was a staple of Moore’s

upbringing – “it probably goes back to the first

time I sat on a horse at one and a half, or two” –

he was immaculate in the show ring, and he cut

his racing teeth in boyhood pony races against

his brother Gary on the family property.

His father, George Moore, was one of

the world’s finest riders, a champion jockey

worthy of the oft overused ‘great’ epithet, who

achieved fame and fortune not only at home

in Australia, but also in Britain, France and the

United States; a rider associated with doyens

and legends of the turf like Prince Aly Khan and

Alec Head, T. J. Smith and Tulloch (Khorassan),

Noel Murless and Jim Joel – and the last-named

pair’s Derby-winning champion Royal Palace

(Ballymoss). His dad’s sister, Margaret, was

married to jockey Garnet Bougoure.

But, while Gary, two years his junior, was

developing towards a career as an elite jockey

in his own right – apprenticed at 15 to no less

a master than the aforementioned Head –

Moore’s cricket and rugby at Cranbrook School

in Sydney kept him busy most days, including

weekends. Afternoons at the races just didn’t fit

his schedule.

“I captained the school rifle club, too,

would you believe?” he says, and his rifle once

felled a kangaroo at Yarraman Park, the stud

farm his father sold on to the Mitchell family

in 1968. He put the hide to good use, adorning

what was then his absolute pride and joy,

a white Mini Cooper S with red upholstery

and mechanical foibles that played a hand in

changing the course of his life.

“I loved my Cooper S; I took the kangaroo,

it was the worst skinning you’ve ever seen, but I

made it as the car’s console and the gear stick,”

he recalls, with a grin.

Moore relates how he was working at a

stock broker firm, Patrick (Levy) & Co., when,

after a late Friday night at The Oak in Double

Bay, his Cooper S caused a stern confrontation

with his father.

“I was in the two-car garage, below dad’s

bedroom, and I couldn’t turn the engine off; I’d just

put a new choke cable on and I had trouble, I had

to jump out, lift the bonnet and release that choke

cable that had caught on the throttle,” he says.

“I knew what was going to happen; dad was

waiting at the front

door for me. And he

gave it to me: ‘Son,

you don’t know

how much work I

go through to take

weight off and ride

the next day, you’re

going to go to the

track and you’re

going to learn.’ And

that’s how I came to

be in an old wooden

gypsy wagon at

Randwick with

Tommy Smith.”

He remembers

the curved roof and a spartan interior

containing some seats and a shelf.

“We’d look straight out, the horses would

come over, and Mr. Smith and the other

trainers would be giving them instructions,”

he continues. “He gave me a clock; I’d never

clocked a horse before, I’d never been to the

track before. He said to me, ‘Here’s a clock,

son, look over there at the half-mile and start

clocking.’ Dad’s riding trackwork and I’m up in

the gypsy wagon!”

He told Smith he could ride and within days

he was riding trackwork. Another trainer, Darby

Armstrong, approached him and before he

knew it, he was riding as an amateur at picnic

races, starting out at Campbelltown.

“Mum was kind enough to take me in the

Jaguar and I arrived like King Farouk!” he

laughs. “I fell off at the start of the cup but got

back on and ran second, and finished leading

jockey on the day; I came home with about 100

bucks in my pocket and I said, ‘How long’s this

been going on?’”

He rode the picnic circuit once a week with

Joe Manning booking his rides, and then he

was called home to the family’s new property,

Hopewood, a cattle ranch near Gundagai, New

South Wales; George had taken a bad fall at

Canterbury and would be out of action for a

period of months. The cattle needed tending,

Moore’s stockbroking job in the city was

suddenly over and he was about to get his first

experience as a racehorse trainer.

His father got hold of three horses for him,

the aged but high-class Amusement Park (Pipe

Of Peace) and Beau Tirage (Faux Tirage), and a

capable maiden, Border King, “for dad to have a

bet”. Moore opened two gates and drove a John

Deere tractor with a disc plough to “turn the red

soil” and make an uphill gallop, a rough copy of

what he had seen in Newmarket in the summer

of 1967.

“Dad said ‘you’re going to do everything’.

The only thing I didn’t do was farrier, but I

still had to learn how to pull a shoe off. So,

I’ve gone from ‘Pitt Street farmer’ to full-on

horse trainer,” he says, referencing Sydney’s

downtown business district.

“If I didn’t work them in the morning, I rode

them out on cattle work all day – it was a pure

cattle ranch, no broodmares. That’s how I got

into it. We had a two-horse float and I’d go to

the race meetings.”

The first time he saddled runners was at the

Tumut picnics in southern New South Wales

and George went with him.

“If I remember right, Amusement Park

won the Cup and Border King won the maiden

– I think I rode three winners on the day – but

the general manager got drunk at the bar and

forgot to put the money on and dad blew up; we

won but dad always said I was the worst rider

he’d ever seen!” Moore laughs.

“Dad had the name but he made sure I

started with an appreciation of what it’s like at

the bottom; I had to muck out and he said to

me, ‘you make sure you’re on the job by eight

o’clock’. Overalls and a pair of galoshes, that’s

what I wore every day until I could drive out of

there and head back to the life I liked. But that

was the basis to me becoming a horse trainer –

I’m the accidental trainer!”

Best of the best It was the morning after the 2014

LONGINES Hong Kong International Races.

The winter sun was low but bright, a warming

foil to the chill wind that blustered off the Shing

Mun River and whipped sand in a skin-stinging

dance around the Sha Tin yard.

Crouched in a saddling stall, sheltered

behind a wood chip board, Moore and Joao

Moreira hunched low on small plastic stools

that would have comfortably seated a pair of

pre-schoolers, and they laughed.

“We’re up in the stratosphere! We’re still

there, we haven’t come down yet,” Moore said,

and he beamed like the Cranbrook schoolboy

he once was.

“It’s like we’re drunk or something,” Moreira

chipped in. “The feeling is something else.”

Trainer and jockey had, the previous

afternoon, carried off Hong Kong’s two richest

prizes: the street-fighting Designs On Rome

(Holy Roman Emperor) had seen off former

stablemate Military Attack (Oratorio) in a

head-bobber to win the LONGINES Hong Kong

Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) and Able Friend had taken

quickening strides towards greatness with an

imperious victory in the LONGINES Hong Kong

Mile (Gr 1, 1600m).

“It’s the biggest result of my career,” Moore

asserted as he sat there.

His reputation as a big-occasion trainer was

booming; it was nine months after Sterling City

(Nadeem) gave him a bedazzling success on

the globally-significant Dubai World Cup night,

but a time before Werther (Tavistock), Rapper

Dragon (Street Boss) and Beauty Generation

came along and added further layers of gilded

gloss.

Now, more than five and a half years on,

the eye-catching haul of big-race wins and the

champions Moore has nurtured set him apart

from his Hong Kong peers. He has 61 wins in

Hong Kong races designated as a Group 1, or

the old ‘HKG1’ from before the Hong Kong

Jockey Club gained ‘Blue Book’ recognition;

his fully-fledged Group 1 tally stands at 36, with

four of those achieved overseas.

John Size has an outstanding 11

premierships, but, by comparison, his tally

of Group 1 wins comes in at 13, while fellow

champion trainers Tony Cruz and Caspar

Fownes have 22 and six such successes.

“It’s going to be very hard to replace him.

I don’t know if you can replace like for like,”

says Beauty Generation’s regular partner Zac

Purton.

With two race meetings to go, Moore has

accrued a Hong Kong record 1,734 wins from

16,330 runners, and prize money approaching

an unsurpassed HK$2.1 billion (approximately

A$387.6 million); he was the first trainer in the

city to reach 1,000 wins, the first to break the

HK$1 billion ($184.6 million) mark, the first to

train a horse to win all three legs of the Four-

Year-Old Classic Series; he has won the Hong

Kong Derby (Listed, 2000m) a record six times;

his stars have taken the coveted Hong Kong

Horse of the Year title nine times, and two

of those, the mighty Able Friend and Beauty

Generation, are the co-highest rated gallopers

in Hong Kong history.

He is Hong Kong’s undisputed big-race

king, but it wasn’t always so. “I was a slow

starter,” he says, recalling his early years as a

licensed trainer.

World view pays offMoore’s life and career reveal a knack

for spotting an opportunity’s potential at an

early stage, or tapping an emerging trend and

capitalising. That was the case in the spring

of 1971 when he arrived at Kai Tak airport via

France and Singapore, and realised something

possibly big was brewing in Hong Kong. His

father knew the chief steward’s brother, helped

him get a licence, and he rode the final months

of the last amateur season, then stayed on as a

professional.

“I lived on Kowloon-side in a little 200

square-foot room,” he recalls of those days

when, every morning, he and fellow rider Geoff

Lane would take a stomach-churning journey

across Victoria Harbour in a walla-walla, a

small water taxi.

“When the professional season was about

to start, Geoff was one of those invited to ride:

Gumbleton, ‘Flapper’ Yates, Bobby Elliott; a

few of the amateurs kept going, the MacMillan

brothers kept riding for a season or two after that.”

But his father was about to set up in

Chantilly, France, training for big-hitting

American owner Nelson Bunker Hunt; Moore

was flown to the United States for a meeting,

the idea being he would be part of the set-up

too, but his head – if not yet his heart – was

already in Hong Kong. He turned down the

offer and returned to Asia.

Gary flew in for a visit and by 1972 the

Chantilly experiment was over, his father

followed and the whole Moore clan was in situ,

together, in an apartment close to Happy Valley

racecourse. The patriarch and great jockey-

turned trainer gave the new pro racing scene

the kudos it required, with youngest son riding

as stable jockey – between carving out his own

impressive collection of majors in Australia and

Europe – and eldest as the back-up: “I was more

dad’s lead work rider,” Moore says.

That didn’t stop him collecting 23 wins

from 304 rides as a jockey between March 1971

and the 1976/77 season. In the first season of

the professional era, Hong Kong staged only

258 races, rising to 411 in Moore’s final season

as a rider.

By 1985 he had gained experience observing

and working with some of the world’s best

trainers – Kevin Prendergast in Ireland, Colin

Hayes in Australia and Charlie Whittingham in

the United States.

“The feeding in America, it was amazing;

I turned everything around for dad with

nutrition, that was the key, turning around from

the old oats, maize, barley, wheat. What Charlie

Whittingham was feeding on top of the grain

was amazing. And, you know what, today I still

have my little pad; I wrote everything down, the

way he fed, the times he fed, leading into races

– I noted everything in that notepad and kept

it,” he says.

When George, Hong Kong’s dominant

trainer with 11 championships on the board,

decided that year to retire after heart bypass

surgery, Moore stepped in.

“I was leading trainer in my first season

but that’s because of what dad left me. I think

I would have had to have been pretty bad not

to be,” he says of that first campaign, which

yielded 48 wins from a 482-race season.

“I had so much to learn, even though I’d

spent time with some of the world’s greats. I

needed time. It took me a long time to come to

grips with being a confident trainer; it was trial

and error, until I learned how to kick a horse’s

programme off. I needed to learn management

and the ability to go to yearling sales and also

buy tried horses worldwide. I learned nothing

about yearlings from 1971 until the early ‘80s,

that’s one thing I was missing.”

He turned to bloodstock agent John Foote,

a connection through jockey Brent Thomson

from his time spent at Lindsay Park with Hayes.

Foote helped Moore’s Australian sourcing

and the combination brought the handler a

Stewards’ Cup winner in 1987, Distinction

(Pago Pago). Motivation (Egg Toss) came in

from Argentina and won the 1993 Hong Kong

Invitational Cup, now the Hong Kong Cup, and

in the later 1990s they spread their net to the

United States.

“I bought John Size’s number one miler at

Keeneland,” he says. “People think Ricky Yiu

bought Electronic Unicorn, it’s totally wrong, I

picked the horse out with John Foote; I fell out

with the owner and within three months of him

entering the stable he had moved him to Ricky

Yiu, and then he was Horse of the Year for John

Size.”

Moore had seen rival champion trainer

Brian Kan start to enjoy success with European

imports and he spotted an opportunity to tap the

same pool but with the intention to snare nicer

types. Foote connected him to Luke Lillingston

and from that came a successful association

with Alastair Donald. The 21st century saw

Moore’s stock improve as he purchased tried

European horses of higher quality – and he did

the leg-work, going to Europe, attending Ascot

and Goodwood, flying over to Ireland.

“I remember one day we set off from

Brighton, I think it was, and went all the way

up to the north, to Scotland, to see a horse; we

went everywhere,” Moore says, throwing his

arm out to emphasise the distances he would

travel.

From starting out, it took him almost 10

years to get his first real star, the New Zealand

import and 1995 Hong Kong Derby hero,

Makarpura Star (Native Kingdom); it was

another 11 before his next champ won the same

contest, Viva Pataca (Marju), a US$1 million

buy for Stanley Ho, out of Sir Mark Prescott’s

Newmarket yard. But, since 2006, it’s been ‘viva’

almost all the way.

“John’s willingness to go out on a limb and

procure a good horse has been outstanding as

far as Hong Kong racing is concerned,” observes

rival champion Size. “He’s been an exceptional

example of someone who can acquire a horse

from overseas and win big races in Hong Kong

with it, which is no mean feat. It’s difficult to get

horses from Europe and Australia to make the

adaption and go on and be Group 1 horses –

he’s done that very successfully.”

With so few Group 1 races on the Hong

Kong calendar before the turn of the century,

Moore’s first arrived 22 years into his training

career, in 2007, when Able One (Cape Cross)

and Viva Pataca won the Champions Mile

(Gr 1, 1600m) and QEII Cup (Gr 1, 2000m);

remarkably, Moore saddled the same pair to

win the same two races fully three years later.

Having found his stride, he didn’t falter.

The G1 winners kept coming, mostly from his

summer European scouting trips: Xtension

(Xaar), Dan Excel (Shamardal), Military

Attack, Dominant (Cacique) and Designs

On Rome. But success brought a cost, the

rising price of those European horses to

eye-watering levels. He spread his net wider

again; he looked back to Australia for tried

gallopers, and in came Werther, Rapper

Dragon and Beauty Generation, while the

southern hemisphere yearling sales yielded

Able Friend and the unfulfilled brilliance of

Aethero (Sebring).

Champions and beyondAsk Moore on most given days to recall his

finest career moments and his response would

be restrained, almost evasive, making plain

that he lives more for the next big win than for

dwelling on past glories. But in Able Friend and

Beauty Generation he nurtured two horses of

such outstanding ability that it would be nigh

on impossible for any trainer not to reflect on

their achievements somewhat wistfully.

Able Friend had a stunning burst of speed

that belied his hulking chestnut frame. The

gelding vied for four-year-old honours with

fellow Horse of the Year and stablemate Designs

On Rome, and then dominated the Hong Kong

mile scene for a season; he was even designated

world champion sprinter after a sensational

last-to-first win under a hefty top-weight in the

Premier Bowl Handicap (Gr 2, 1200m).

“You can have favourites and you can have

the best. Able Friend, we had him from day one,

we bought him at the yearling sales and he went

on to be world champion miler,” he says and

leaves it there.

Moore and son George purchased Able

Friend for A$500,000 and the gelding took the

stable to its highest peak. Incredibly, within

three years, Moore matched that summit –

some would argue surpassed it – with Beauty

Generation, a New Zealand-bred bought

privately out of Australia, where he was Group

1-placed as a three-year-old.

Beauty Generation evolved from Derby

wannabe to juggernaut miler, an eight-time

Group 1 winner, a two-time Horse of the Year,

Hong Kong’s record stakes earner – topping

Viva Pataca – and the first horse to break the

HK$100 million earnings barrier. At his peak,

he was invincible, and Moore made him so.

“Beauty Generation, I had to work out what

I was doing with him,” he says. “Was I going to

concentrate on what was not only his physique

but also what was offered on the programme?

He came here as a horse who could go 2000

metres, he holds the 2200-metre track record

here at Sha Tin. But the change was two-fold:

to my eye, he looked like a sprinter-miler, and

then there was the fact that we have so many

mile and 1400-metre races on the programme,

that was a big factor.”

Moore’s skill at bringing in a horse from

overseas and being able to acclimatise it, and

school it in the tough Hong Kong environment,

has been a hallmark of his career. Able Friend’s

old partner Moreira, notes that “he brings them

over and then is able to rise them and get them

to perform at their very best,” and that is no

easy feat. Plenty of big-reputation imports have

flopped, and Moore himself has had his share

of failures, but no other trainer has succeeded

in producing champions in Hong Kong like he

has.

“People ask how do I peak a horse? As far

as I’m concerned, it’s knowing the horse, really

understanding that individual. It’s not training

stereo style,” he says.

“It’s all individual, I treat every horse so

differently because I just love the animal so much.

If I trained a few hundred horses, I’d feel guilty, I’d

be missing something. With 70 horses in Hong

Kong, I can know the horses. With more than

100, I’d miss something, like Thanks Forever, he

looked like the worst of the lot, with his terrible

action, but you get to understand the horse and

nurture him and accept him for what he is, and

then he’s placing in Group 1 races.”

Moore will take that method forward, for

his Hong Kong departure is also an Australian

return. He has unfinished business and he

believes he has time still to complete, with a

small string of about 20 or so horses and the

backing of owners like the Kwok family, Bon

Ho, Matthew Wong and Arrowfield Stud. He

will take his stopwatch and his binoculars, and

five decades of experience, and he will try to get

the remaining bucket list item he most desires.

“I want that Group 1 win in Australia. I got

one as an owner with Eagle Way – Bryan Guy

trained him – but I want a Group 1 there as a

trainer,” he says, his eyes narrowing.

Australia is his future. When the lights go

out at Happy Valley on July 15, for the first time

since 1971, John Moore will not be a licensed

participant on the Hong Kong racing circuit.

That time is up.

Analysis: Irish-bred import Sixties Groove followed his close second in

the WJ McKell Cup (Listed, 2000m) at Rosehill on June 27, when having

his third run this preparation, with a solid performance under his top

weight (61kg) in winning here. He was eased from his wide barrier (12)

to settle near the tail of the field on the rails, and was still conceding a

big start as he improved at the 600m. He saved ground between runners

at the bend, eased deeper and into clear running at the 200m and then

finished strongly to grab a very good win on the post. It was also a good

ride by Jason Collett. The Lord Mayor had a nice trip in a midfield position

before moving up (deep) nearing the turn. He challenged at the 200m

and then battled strongly for (long neck) second. His Chris Waller-trained

stablemate Carzoff was back about eighth before making his move (wide)

at the 800m. He continued to improve coming to the turn, got to the front

at the 200m and then battled on well for third with Nemingah holding on

nicely for (1.9 lengths) fourth after being handy most of the way. [KB]

VERDICT Aidan O’Brien has won this twice in recent years and More

Beautiful, drawn away from the action when only mid-division inthe Queen Mary, will surely bounce back to her debut form at some point.Dandalla, who cruised home by 6l in the Albany, holds trong claims but the samecan be said of TIME SCALE, who has recorded two impressive wins since steppedup to this trip. Those looking for an each-way alternative to the big three could doworse than David Loughnane’s Santosha.[Andrew Mount]

VERDICT One Master ran a fine race here 12 months ago but this tripmay be pushing it on today’s slower ground and TEREBELLUM

is the one to beat. John Gosden’s filly put up a mighty effort in the Queen Anne atAscot on her first attempt at 1m and is hard to oppose against her own sex.Stablemate Nazeef and Agincourt also have good runs in them, more so probablythan the indefatigable Magic Wand.[Emily Weber]
