Think about a shopping street in Hong Kong, filled with signs for small shops and restaurants, advertising and info signs. The street is a mix of disordered colorful impressions playing with the people; the city is pulsing and living. This inspired us to a conceptual idea. We abstract the street view into colorful boxes, move the
CONCEPTboxes and create a vertical abstraction of a street. The concept creates opportunities for a good mix of private spaces and public areas. A vertical street that makes movement between floors possible along the façade.
SECTION A-A1:800
On the street level there are small shops along a shopping street through the building. There is also a plaza with entrance to the building. A mix of private and public, calm and living.
In the following 16 floors there are offices, all with their own reception. Thanks to common areas connecting the floors, different levels can easily be joined.
To enter the hotel you take the elevator from the street level to the hotel lobby floor. Here you have
DISPOSITIONthe reception and a lounge for the hotel guests. The following 19 floors consist of hotel rooms.
To reduce the noise from the nightclub on the top of the building we have made a garden. With its heavy layer of water filled leca and concrete it works as a good sound insulator but also as a great entrance to the nightclub. The night club is divided into three floors with seats for about 500 people.
loading, laundry etc.2 floors
Every box of the building is covered with a double glass facade. This gives the building two special qualities. The two layers of glass contribute to a good sound climate inside the rooms. The layers also create spaces in-between that gives the impression of an outdoor environment. The outer glass with STC 30 makes the balconies acoustical environment good with a pleasant level of street noise.
DOUBLE GLASS FACADE
To insulate the night club from the hotel rooms situated on the floor below, vv a heavy construction is used. To make use of the structure in a functional way it is used as a foundation for a garden. A thick layer of leca makes it possible for trees to grow.Mixed with water the layer is heavy and therefore a good sound insulator. A layer of ordinary soil would be too heavy with the thickness required for trees.

Every office floor has their own reception next to the elevators. Combined with the conference rooms on the opposite side, this creates a visitor area.
On the office floors the conceptual form contributes to a large wall area, especially in the open office space. This is good since more wall area enables more absorption.
In the open office area there are small glass rooms with good sound insulation. These rooms enable small meetings or a place for those who occasionally need some extra privacy for example to make phone calls. This reduces the high level talk and makes the office more pleasant.
The idea of a vertical street begins at the street level. We created a shopping street right through the building with small shops in several levels to make the building accessible to the public. This part of the ground level interacts with the lively street around and do not have that high acoustical criteria. Therefore the shopping area is placed facing the noisy road.
The plaza area is a calmer part of the ground level. This makes a great entrance to the hotel and the nightclub. On the east side of the plaza there is a café that visually makes a barrier to the train station. On the east side of the plaza there are fountains masking the noisy environment.
Since the plaza is located in the north part of the site, the building shadows the plaza and that creates a comfortable place for relaxing in hot Hong Kong.
The entrance to the hotel and the nightclub is facing the plaza. Here is an info desk and some seating area, where you can call a taxi or sit and wait for your dinner date. The rest of the hotel lobby functions are located on the hotel lobby floor 18 floors up.
The offices have their own entrance, to separate the flow of business people from the hotel guests.

Absorbing screens
Absorbing diffusing walls
Used for critical areas: printer room, confer-ence room and CEO office.
In the open office a semi-divided plan solution is chosen. This gives the impression of a continuous open space but retains the acoustical advantages of a smaller room. To keep the sound from directly going to one side to the other, the walls on both sides of the opening is highly diffusive and absorptive. The screens shielding off the individual spaces and the absorptive material in the ceiling keeps both the STI value and the reverberation time down.
Used for less critical areas: wall between coffee room and open office, restrooms smaller cell offices.

The main part of the hotel lobby facilities is located on the first floor of the hotel section of the building. This creates a calm atmosphere for the hotel residents. In the lobby there is also a coffee bar, placed under the second floor balcony to lower the noise from the coffee machines. The hotel’s laundry and baggage room are placed in the basement under the street level.
The entrance to the nightclub is located in the garden above the hotel part. Here you have an outside bar with a fantastic view over the glowing city at night.
The first nightclub floor is designed for socializing. Here is a good sound environment for talking even when loud music is played on the stage upstairs. After passing the coat room you have a bar and some seating area, also with a great view of the city.
When going up to the second floor you have the stage right in front of you, facing your destination, the evening’s big happening. Most of the tables are here, with the best view and sound quality.
The third floor has a mezzanine that surrounds the stage. Here are also the nightclub’s kitchen and offices.
Behind the hotel beds there are diffusive walls that prevents flutter eco. The wall is designed to follow the building’s conceptual form.

Between the nightclub stage and the garden there is a floor with STC 72. During the nightclubs opening hours music will be played in the garden as well, and therefore the sound reducing layer is put underneath the garden. The sound reducing layer consists of 1500mm leca with an estimated density of 1000kg/m3, when filld with water, and 400mm concrete with a density of 2300kg/m3. This gives an estimated STC of 84.

HOTEL ROOMS FLOORSAll the hotel rooms have different sizes with different sized balconies. Although, all the rooms have the same width to follow a construction grid. The most noticeable difference in size is in the balconies. These vary from being just a strip, to the same size as the bedroom’s part of the room, where the room is more suite-like.
The balconies are colored on the inside, which gives the building its multicolored appearance. Depending on how far from the facade the inside windows are, the amount of color differs. During day, the external glass reflects the surrounding city, and during night the balconies light up and give the building a lot of color.

SOCIALIZING AREASThe vertical street continues among the hotel floors. There are spaces in the facade where the boxes are removed and replaced with glass boxes. The spaces reach over several floors and create an outdoor-feeling but with the indoor advantages. These spaces are filled with social functions such as cafés, relaxing spaces, pool playing etc.

The floors are designed to make a better sound environment on especially the first floor. The bar on the first floor are placed on the oposite side of the stairs to be protected from high sound pressure levels. There are also absorbers on the way down the stairs and on the ceiling over the bar, so that the bartenders have a better work environment.
In a night club designed for non-acoustical music it is important to keep the reverberation time short, especially at low frequencies where the bass tends to sound boomy. Therefore there is a floor with an air pocket for low frequencies and a ceiling with high absorption at high frequencies in the nightclub.
