From the EditorFrom the EditorAnimportantmissionoftheCollegeistoencourageandtoorganizecontinuousmedicaleducationactivities incardiovascularmedicine for itsmembers.Keepingabreastwith thedevelopmentofmedicalpractice isvital in thedeliveryofhigh-qualitypatientcare. Italsoenablespatientsunderourmanagementnottobedeniedoftheadvancementinmedicalpracticethatcouldrelievetheirsufferingsorimprovetheirlongevity.

Withsuch, theCollegehasanumberofscientificmeetings in thisyear.TheCardioRhythm2011was just successfullyconcluded. Itwasco-organizedwith theChineseSocietyofPacingandElectrophysiology,andisamajorscientificmeetingincardiacarrhythmiainthispartofChinaandSouthEastAsia.

ComingupfortherestoftheyearareanumberofscientificmeetingsreportedinthisNewsletter.ItcouldbenotedthatotherthantheAnnualScientificMeeting,therestofthesescientificmeetingsareheldincollaborationwithothermedicalprofessionalorganizations,includingtheHongKongCollegeofRadiology,and thecardiacsocietiesofvariousprovincesofsouthernChinaandofMacau.

TheCollege isalwaysdelighted tocooperatewithotherprofessional institutes for thepurposeofmedicaleducation,with thefirmbelief that thiswouldultimatelybenefit thepatients,whethertheyareunder thecareofcardiovascularmedicalprofessionalsormedicalprofessionals inotherspecialties.Likewise,membersoftheCollegehadparticipatedasspeakersinthescientificsessionofHongKongDoctorsUnion,andas speakerandexaminationadvisor incardiopulmonaryresuscitationofHongKongCollegeofFamilyPhysicians, though the targetaudiencesarenotcardiovascularmedicalprofessionals.TheCollegewouldbereluctanttoexclude,andbewilderedtobeexcludedby,otherorganizationswithsuchmutualobjective frommedicaleducationandprofessionaldevelopmentactivities.

Cominguparealsocommunityactivities, the JumpRope forHeartand theWorldHeartDay.Memberswillbeinformedoffurtherdetailswhenavailable.

ItwaschairedbyDr.WONGChoYiu,Peter,DistinguishedFellow,HongKongCollegeofCardiology

Wellcontrolofhypertensioncouldminimizeorpreventitscomplication.Mosthypertensionstudiesshow thatmanyhypertensivepatientsdonothave theirbloodpressureadequatelymanaged.Often,twotothreehypertensivedrugsareneededtolowerthehighbloodpressuretoasatisfactorylevel.Anidealhypertensivedrugshouldnotonlybeeffectiveinloweringthehighbloodpressure,itshouldalsobefreefromserioussideeffectsandconvenientforthepatienttotake.Combinationofcertainhypertensivemedicationscouldhavesynergisticeffectandminimizethesideeffectofeachindividualmedication.Fixeddosecombinationintoasinglepillcouldencouragecompliance.

Themeetingwasattendedbyaround60medicalpractitioners.

Therewerenearly2,000participantsfrom 47 countries/regions in theconference.With over300 facultymembe r s f r om bo t h l o ca l andoverseas, a high-level conferencewith 99 sessions of lectures, casepresentationsandworkshops focusinginElectrophysiology,CardiacPacing,Devices,Atrial Fibrillation,Ablation,Heart Failure,SuddenDeath,ArrhythmiaManagement, Syncope,BradycardiaPacingandTachycardiaTherapyDeviceweredevelopedandpresented.Someof thesewerepresentedasjointsymposiumwithHeartRhythmSociety,SOLAECE,ISHNE,AsianPacificHeartRhythmSociety,WorldSocietyofArrhythmias,HongKongMedicalAssociation,HongKongDoctorsUnion,HongKongCollegeofFamilyPhysicians,TheSocietyofPhysiciansofHongKong,HongKongCollegeofAnaesthesiologistsandHongKongCardiacNursingAssociation.

Having a good response in year 2009, theCertificateCourseofCardiacRhythmManagementwasorganizedagainon24-27February2011.Itwaswell attendedbymedical practitionersandalliedprofessionals, coveringall aspectsofarrhythmiamanagement.OtherhighlightsofCardioRhythm2011includedoralabstractsand

postersfromallovertheworld,aswellasshowcaseofstate-of-the-artproductsandtechnologyintheexhibition.

The topic was “AutonomicI n f l u e n c e a n d M o d u l a t i o n o nArrhythmiaandHeartFailure”.FacultyDinnerwasalsoheldatDynastyClubafter the lecture.Nearly60 facultiesincludingCSPEmemberswere invitedtojoin.

Themainhighlightofsocial functionwas theGalaDinner,supportedbyMeetings&ExhibitionsHongKong(MEHK),adivisionofHongKongTourismBoard(HKTB).Itwasheldon26February2011atCafeDeco, thePeak.Nearly300 facultiesandguestsattended thedinner.Themostexcitingpartwasluckydraw,withgiftsdonatedbytheCollegeandsponsors.

During the dinner, there were prizepresentations forBest PaperAwardandYoung InvestigatorAward,andsouvenirswerealsopresentedtosupportingparties.

“One World, One Home, One Heart”.

One World:WiththeUNsummitonNon-CommunicableDisease(NCDs)takingplacejustbeforeWorldHeartDay, there ismomentousopportunity tocommunicate themessagesaboutNCDSummitoutcomesandthe importanceofelevatingNCDsuptheglobalhealthagenda,within theWorldHearDayactivity.The“OneWorld”themeincorporatesthisglobalgoal.

One Home:Individualsarecalledon to reduce theirand their family's riskofheartdiseaseandstroke,bysharingthesteps thatcanbetakento improvehearthealthathome(suchas improvingdietandphysicalactivity).

One Heart:Asalways,theemphasiswillbeonimprovinghearthealthacrossallnations.

Jump Rope for Heart Program (JRFH)141schoolshaveregistered for theJumpRopeforHeartprogramin thecurrentacademicyear(2010-2011).Eighthearthealthtalksand15schoolvisitsbyexpertteamswereconductedattheschools.Verypositiveresponsewasreceived.

TheJRFHRopeSkippingInstructorWorkshopwassuccessfullyheldonDecember2010(Sunday)atTWGHsSinChuWanPrimarySchool.115teachersandeliteskippersattendedtheworkshopandlearnt the techniquesof teachingskippingskills tostudents,andreceivedmoreinformationabouttheJumpRopeforHeartProgram.

TheJRFHInter-schoolRopeSkippingCompetition2011isscheduledonSaturday9July2011andSunday10July2011atLaiChiKokParkSportsCentre.The teammanager’smeetingcumlotsdrawingceremonywillbeheldon14May2011atthecompetitionvenue.

Anattempt toset theGuinnessWorldRecordfor the largestnumberof“singlerope twopersonsskipping”simultaneously for3minutes,was theclimaxof theJRFH10thAnniversaryCelebratingActivitiesSeries.Itwassuccessfullyheldon30September2010(Thursday)at10:18am.15,510students from97primaryandsecondaryschools joined theevent.TheJRFHSecretariathassentallnecessarymaterialsand information to theofficialsecretariatof theGuinnessWorldRecord.Anofficial replywasreceivedon15February2011.OurapplicationwasrejectedasonlyoneparticipantperropewouldbeadmittedfortheskippingcategoryoftheGuinnessWorldRecord.
