B.Essentialexamskills

Back to basics• The Listening section accounts for 32% of the HKAT (Pre-S1).

• You have 15 minutes for the Listening section.

• You can only listen to the audio recording ONCE. The time allocation is as follows:

✔ Jot down keywords for each question while you listen.

✔ Use short forms, numbers and symbols only.

✔ Be aware that the questions may not be in the same order as in the audio recording, especially in form-filling.

✔ Double check your answer.

✔ Make a guess if you have no idea about the answer.

✔ Never leave a question unanswered.

Below you will see how you can apply the listening skills in the actual exam.

AAAnalysing the information(2013,2015-2020) When you need to analyse if an option is CORRECT, TRUE or NOT true,

you should:

• listen very carefully. You may need to get your answers from different parts of the audio recording.

• check the options one by one. Do NOT just pay attention to the keywords. Understand what each option is about.

• be careful with the options that have exactly the same keywords as in the audio script. They may be there to mislead you.

✔ Read all the questions in that part.

✔ Circle the keywords.

✔ Predict what you are going to hear.
