In our annual January “List Of Things We Want To Do This Year” my daughter, Harriet, decided that she wanted to swim 2000m at some point, twice as far as her previousschool swimming best, and also raise money for charity (inspired by her classmateSiobhan’s spectacular achievement raising over £10,000 for Birmingham Children’sHospital with her Bourne2Bourne cycle ride). So when I saw that Friday 18th – Sunday20th March was the annual Sport Relief event, I thought we could kill two birds with onestone and we signed up for the swimathon. Harriet would swim 2km and I would swimthe rest of the 5km challenge.Having been promised almost £300 in sponsorship, we set out for Shipston leisurecentre on Sunday 20th March, only to be told that we’d missed it, as they had held theirsthe previous day. So we raced drove carefully to Chipping Campden and begged to beallowed to gatecrash their event, and jumped in to the pool to see what we could do.I had planned to take about two hours for a long, steady swim but the detour and thechange in time and date meant we had barely an hour and 50 minutes until the poolclosed and they threw us out on the street. Despite that, Harriet managed to complete111 lengths of the Chipping Campden pool in an hour and 45 minuets, narrowly beatingmy time to do 167. We did it!Thank you to all those who sponsored us, and well done to Harriet who kept going evenafter she realised she still had another 30 lengths to go and was already exhausted! And finally, I wanted to let people know that the playground at the David Wilson / AbacotFields estate is for the use of everyone in the village and is not, despite signs sayingotherwise, private property. Please feel free to use this facility, which was provided by thedeveloper for the whole of Honeybourne. To include something in the village magazine, please [email protected]

Honeybees WI meetingMonday 20th March 2016.We had several women attend who had not been to previous meetings and 24 membersattend. We had a number of ‘officer’ positions filled but needed to complete the processso that we could be formally registered with the National Federation. We dealt with thebusiness side of the meeting initially and gave details about forthcoming events in themonths ahead. We then had refreshments and began our ‘craft dabble’.The crafts demonstrated were ink and water art, fabric eggs, crocheting and embroidery, spinning and weaving, decorative icing on cup cakes, and decorative gift boxes.Everyone was able to sample the different crafts. It seemed to be a very interestingway to spend an hour and I think everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves. It was alsoa good way to socialise. A big thank you to everyone one who demonstrated their craft.By the end of the evening we had been able to discuss the WI with most participantsand we were able to fill our outstanding posts. At our meeting in April we will see theformalities completed. We then had a short presentation about the man and womenwho had set up the WI in 1915. It seemed that everyone had an enjoyable evening in awarm and relaxed atmosphere.Next month we have a speaker – Diane Prosser – her subject is “From tights totrousers”. This should be an entertaining subject.Everyone is welcome at our meetings however from March onwards anyone attendingwill have to pay a visitors fee £3 – unless they become members. Do come and joinus.

bretforton garden clubDo you know your cemetery shears from your potato ladles and trench hoes?On Thursday 3rd March we enjoyed listening to John Matthews talk to usabout 'Vintage Garden Tools'. John gave us anentertaining insight into the history and usage of tools including itemsspecifically developed for the war such as the ‘Digging Boot’. Dear FriendsThe Easter season is here at last after the rigours of Lent and the absence offlowers in the church and no alleluias! I wonder how we all managed with our Lentendisciplines? What I hope and pray above all is that now all around us speaks ofrenewal, of joy and of new beginnings, that you will experience it all with a renewedsense of thankfulness. In the church it is a time of amazing joy as we celebrate onceagain the resurrection of Jesus, restoration of hope to shattered disciples, assurance of the triumph of life over death. Alongside the Easter Eggs and Easterbunnies the world around us is bursting into life, the trees are in bud if not alreadyshowing their spring coat of fragile green and the church too is filled with flowers, wecan sing the Gloria again and as many alleluias as we can fit in. I very much hopeand pray that your hearts will be filled with that same joy.So as the world is bursting with new beginnings so it is a new beginning in the life ofthese six parishes. After my last service in Honeybourne on 3rd April and after Ihave said my farewells at lunch in Weston sub Edge Village Hall the removal mencome in the following day and on 5th April, in the evening, we shall leave for ournew life in Addington. We shall go with a mixture of sadness at what we are leavingbehind and excitement as we look forward to the future. Thus begins the vacancyfor you with all the opportunities and challenges that it brings. You will not be onyour own, of course, because Celia will still be here, working three day a week plusSundays and as we are part of a team, it is Craig as Team Rector who has ultimateresponsibility. That said, it will feel like a vacancy! But the really important thing is tosee it as an amazing opportunity and a time of exploration and growth. The regularthings will not suddenly cease – there will still be Honeyangels, there will still beMessy Church, there will still be Bible Study – but it is a time when people discoverthe unplumbed depths of their spirituality or realise that they are rather good attaking a lead. It is not a time for closing things down but for being open to themovement of the spirit and in which the prevailing culture must be one of “we can dothis”. Over the next little while, representatives from each of the parishes will puttogether a Parish Profile. This is an important document which will eventually besent to applicants for the post, so it has to be enticing! Please pray for them as theywork to produce this.My hopes for you as six parishes and part of the Vale and Cotswold Edge is that youwill work ever more closely together, sharing worship, enriching each other, supporting each other with a deep and growing sense of being the body of Christ inthis place. It is not a time for going it alone. The God whom we worship is God inTrinity who draws us into relationship. We are called to mirror this in our life here aschurch with a deep sense that what we do together will give greater glory to Godand build us up as his body here on earth. As Edward and I leave we shall keep youall in our prayers and in our thoughts and we ask that you pray for us and for thepeople of Addington on the next step of our Christian pilgrimage. With love and blessingsDebbie

A 5.5-Mile Walk with wonderful views

Sturdy shoes or boots are recommended.

This route is clearly signed (signposts and waymarkers)

Pets should be kept on leads at all times.

The walk starts at the Gate Inn. Adjacent to the pub car park is the footpath to the Church. Follow thispath through two fields and into the churchyard. Keep to the lefthand edge and exit at the kissing gate.Follow the road round to the right until you arrive at the Tjunction at the cemetery. Opposite you will seea stile in the righthand corner near to the cemetery fence. Over this stile and another stile into the mainfield where you will follow the hedge on your lefthand side until you arrive at the stile onto the MickletonRoad. TAKE GREAT CARE when crossing this road.Over the next stile into the field. Do not follow the direction of the signpost as this is incorrect, but headtowards the railway bridge in the far left corner of this field. Over another stile and out onto StratfordRoad. Turn right and, TAKING GREAT CARE, walk (facing the oncoming traffic) under the two railwaybridges.Immediately after the second bridge turn right onto the bridleway. Pass by the cattle grid and follow thetarmac surface to a large field gate. Pass through and follow the track up the hill. When you get to thefootpath signpost at the top of the hill, turn around to admire the view – a lovely spot for a picnic (butremember to take your litter home with you!). You will see Honeybourne church below, and sweepingviews including (from the left) Cutsdean Hill (305 m high), Oxenton Hill (223m), Dumbleton Hill (168m),Forest of Dean (up to 290m) with the Black Mountains (up to 886 m) behind, Bredon Hill (299 m) and theMalvern Hills (up to 425 m high).Turn left and follow the footpath sign along the top of the hill with the fence on your righthand side(hedge on left), you will pass through two large fields before passing a large barn and arriving at thePebworth Road near the top of Baylis’s Hill. Look over your right shoulder to see Meon Hill.TAKE GREAT CARE to cross the road and pass through the field gate. This is not a right of way, but youhave permission to pass through on this walk *. Walk along the stone track to the lefthand corner of thisfield, then turn right with the hedge on your left and head towards the metal gate; and then on to a stile inthe far lefthand corner of this field.Step over the stile and ditch bridge; cross the driveway, and look for a wooden ditch bridge near the lefthand hedge, then straightahead until you reach a ditch bridge leading onto a stile into the next field.Over the stile and straightahead to the next stile on the opposite side of the field. Over the stile, thenstraight ahead to the next stile (to the left of the track). Over this stile then walk straightahead with thehedge on your right until you meet a small metal frame that you should take care to climb over. Continuein the same direction until you meet another stile leading onto the road. Turn right and follow the highwayfor 200 meters to the church. Enjoy a stroll around the grounds before retracing your steps back toHoneybourne. We hope you have enjoyed your walk today, and that we have whetted your appetite for a variety offuture walks in and around the Parish of Honeybourne.* To obtain permission to access this and other walks in the Heart of England Forest telephone 01789491 391Email [email protected] for copies of any walks, to express concerns, or seek advice on how tobest enjoy Honeybourne’s Rights of Way.
