Inside RightWhat is CSA?Community Supported Agriculture

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) is an attempt to address the many problems of modern agriculture by redefining the

relationship between the farmer, consumer and the natural biological systems which comprise a farm. A CSA program is a type of “cooperative,” where a consumer financially commits to a full season of produce months in advance of the start of the growing season. Each week from June to Novem-ber, members receive a variety of freshly harvested crops. Since the nutritional value of produce de-clines significantly while on supermarket shelves, as a member you will enjoy the freshest, most nutritious produce available – harvested daily for you and your family by the farm staff.

CSA provides the farmer with several practical advantages including the resources to buy seeds and other supplies before the first spring strawberry ripens in the field and allows the farmer to focus on actually growing crops during the growing season instead of fretting over sales and delivery sched-ules. The rewards and risks inherent in agriculture are shared by the farm community, which means that in years of environmental or weather con-straints, members may receive more of one crop but less of another.

Farmland we manage

Our CSA program is one of the largest in the nation with over 2,700 memberships providing seasonal, locally grown organic

produce to over 3,500 individuals. Some of the land on which Honey Brook Organic Farm operates is part of the 860 acre Stony Brook-Millstone Water-shed Reserve and includes woodland, old fields and frontage along the Stony and Honey Brooks. Four-teen miles of trails lace the reserve and are open to the public year round, dawn to dusk.In addition to the acreage rented from the Stony Brook-Millstone Watershed Association, land is also rented from the Friends of Hopewell Valley Open Space and private owners of a preserved farm in Hopewell Township. We also organically farm land in Chesterfield Township, Burlington County, including the first farm preserved by New Jersey’s Farmland Preservation Program in 1985. Honey Brook Organic Farm has become a national model not only of successful sustainable farming, but ours was one of the first farms to demonstrate the feasi-bility of partnerships between non-profit environ-mental groups and farmers.

Buying A ShareHow Honey Brook Organic Farm CSA Works

Our membership sign-up season is from December to whenever we sell out for the upcoming season. Current members have

priority for the subsequent season; however, every

year there are memberships available for new members.Members receive a variety of seasonal, fresh vegetables, small fruits, herbs and flowers once a week during the harvest season in exchange for their membership fee. The majority of our pro-duce is grown on certified organic fields in Pen-nington and Chesterfield, NJ; a small number of “transitional sustainable” crops are also grown as we continue to convert land to organic production. Our harvest season typically runs from May to mid-November, but could start as early as mid-May, depending on spring’s weather. We grow over 60 types of crops and 350 varieties (includ-ing many unusual and heirloom varieties), allow-ing us to provide you with the greatest possible diversity of crops in each week’s offering.
