At Camp Eagle, there is a massive zipline -- the largest in Texas. After getting properly strapped up and hiking up the hill, everyone that planned to rid had to walk across a bridge to the launch-platform, which stood about a hundred feet high. A bridge, even at that height, would usually be no big deal… except that this particular bridge was made of single planks laid end to end. Yes, there were safety harnesses all the way up, but the bridge was only a foot wide, and slick with drizzle. After making my way up the wibledy-wombledy bridge, I got strapped into the ride. Right before going down the zipline, the passengers wait for about ten seconds hanging on

the line awaiting clear passage. During my time hanging, I heard a faint click from directly above my head (and not the typical click of the release). For some reason, I didn’t want to interrupt anyone to say that my harness might have failed, so I faintly whimpered for four or five seconds… before being released down a three-thousand foot zipline with a questionable harness. Needless to say, I didn’t fall, and the ride went smoothly. The whole ride down, though, my heart was pounding like no other. I held completely still, for fear of shaking something loose, but this only added to my acceleration. I ended up in a bit of a Superman pose… feeling not-so-bulletproof.

It will be a tough 2nd round for us this year. We’re a very quiet locker room this year, but we are very confident. We’ve got a close knit team this year. I look forward to every game in the playoffs.

I think this year that we will make it to the third round . I feel pretty confident against the other teams, however Devine will be a tough game. I think the playoffs are set up for our team to perform very well.

I feel pretty confident coming into playoffs. I think we are ready to play against the other teams. I think as a team we will be a second round contender this year. I look forward to all of our games

I’m really proud of the team for making playoffs in the new district. I feel confident against our opponents, Crystal City and Devine, because we know how they play. we can make it as far in the playoffs as our players are willing to go.

Hondo High School is offering

a new class in the starting of the second

semester in January 2015 to hopefully

get a showing certificate that you took a

Certified Nursing Aide Assistant class.

The school doesn’t know some important

details about the class yet. Details such as

how much the class will cost, who will be

the teacher or teachers, what is actually

going to be taught, or what we can benefit

from taking the class. They do know that

if enough people sign up to take the class

then it will be a for sure thing, and if not

then they will just find it pointless and

cut the class. Also, if more than enough

people sign up, then, of course, seniors

will get picked first.

Within the next few weeks there

will hopefully be a meeting with more

details on the new class such as the cost,

the teacher(s), what will be taught to

the students and how, what is beneficial

towards taking the class, and if it’ll be fun

for you as an individual. One other detail

the school has is that you would need to

start the class from the beginning, not in

the middle of the semester. So if you’re

thinking about taking the class then you

need to sign up in the office for more

information.

HHS to offer nursing course second semester

Thanksgiving is commonly known as a holiday where families get together to watch some football, roast a turkey, eat pumpkin pie, but more importantly give thanks to God. But what is Thanksgiving and where did it come from? Thanksgiving is a holiday that was celebrated as a harvest festival by the Pilgrims in 1621. In September of 1620, 102 pilgrims went on board a ship called the Mayflower. They wanted to find a place to settle somewhere in the Hudson River area. They searched for about a month and then sailed further west to the mainland at Plymouth. For the first few months, many pilgrims died from malnutrition and disease. The remaining adventurers abandoned the

ship and moved ashore to find a place to settle in the wilderness. Two local Native Americans found them and aided them. To their surprise, both of the Natives spoke English. In November, Governor William Bradford who was the group’s leader called for a feast so that they could celebrate their good fortune. The celebration was a success. Hunters were sent to hunt for the event and members of the tribe were invited and brought deer meat. The celebration lasted for three days.In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln made it official that Thanksgiving will be celebrated annually on the on the last Thursday in November. From then on Thanksgiving has been a holiday that’s been celebrated every year by many people. Everybody has

different traditions. Some people like to use Thanksgiving as a chance to help the needy and others like to travel with their families. I, on the other hand, will most likely be at home with my family watching football, eating the turkey and some pumpkin pie. What are you going to do?

THANKSGIVING ANYONE?

Thanksgiving myths debunkedPilgrims held the first Thanksgiv-ing

To see what the first Thanksgiving was like you have to go to: Texas. Texans claim the first Thanksgiv-ing in America actually took place in little San Elizario, a community near El Paso, in 1598 the arrival of Spanish explorer Juan de Onate on the banks of the Rio Grande. De Onate is said to have held a big Thanksgiving festival after leading hundreds of settlers on a grueling 350-mile long trek across the Mexi-can desert.

Pilgrims ate turkey

What did the Pilgrims eat at their Thanksgiving festival? They didn’t have corn on the cob, apples, pears, potatoes or even cranberries. No one knows if they had turkey, although they were used to eating turkey. The only food we know they had for sure was deer.

Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock

The Pilgrims didn’t land in Plym-outh first. They first made landfall at

Provincetown. Of course, the people of Plymouth stick by tradition. Tour guides insist that Plymouth Rock is THE rock.

The Mayflower was supposed to be the only ship.

The Mayflower was originally sup-posed to sail with a sister ship, the Speedwell, but it proved unseawor-thy, and the Mayflower made the journey alone.

Pilgrims dressed in all black and white and had buckles on their hats and shoes.

No, they didn’t. There were no buckles on their shoes. The women dressed in various colors, including red, green blue and violet, and men wore a variety of colors too.

Thanksgiving is a national holiday that has long been misunderstood and misrepresented by Americans for hundreds of years. Now You can tell your family about Thanksgiving myths that you have debunked!

Dilley, Texas is a small town with a population around 3,764. This

number does not include the monkeys that roam the wooded areas. So how did monkeys end up in South Texas? If you have ever passed through Dilley, you might have noticed a chain of locked gates. There is a sign on the front gate that reads “Born Free USA Primate Sanctuary.” The Born Free USA Primate Sanctuary started off with 150 monkeys. Overtime it became the home to more than 600 monkeys that were rescued from dangerous and unsafe areas. Their main goal was to make sure that these monkeys can go on living an ordinary life, with little human interference. According to the Born Free USA Primate Sanctuary page, they “aim to provide a lifelong, high standard of care without being needlessly intrusive.” The members of the Primate Sanctuary focus on

the amount of free space, and group living. The enclosed area consists of 186 acres. In the late 1980s several monkeys escaped from the sanctuary, and have been roaming South Texas for about 34 years. Unfortunately, the members of the Born Free USA Primate Sanctuary were unable to recover all of the monkeys. Many people were worried about the safety of the monkeys. There have been multiple reports of monkeys being killed by hunters in the surrounding areas. Some ranch owners complained about the monkeys being on their property, and eating their deer feed. Some people didn’t mind the monkeys at all, but eventually they over stayed their welcome. Senior Tyler Barnes said that “her ranch was about 20 miles away from the sanctuary, but she has never seen a monkey on their property.” According to ABC- CILO, the monkey population was more than 600 by 1995, so

you could only imagine how many there are now. Over the years these monkeys have kept breeding, and their population has increased drastically. There have been numerous reports of sighted monkeys from areas like Cotulla, Pearsall, and by Interstate 35. Very few people know about the Born Free USA Primate Sanctuary. Therefore, they probably don’t know about the monkeys escaping. Dilley is about 55 miles away from Hondo so there is a good possibility that we might encounter a visit with these monkeys. South Texas may be the beginning of the PLANET OF THE APES….

Ebola takes media by stormPetra CuellarAssosiate Editor

It is believed that Thomas

Eric Duncan, a Liberian man,

was the man who brought Ebola to the United

States. Duncan arrived in Dallas on Sept. 20, and

was tested positive for Ebola on Sept. 30. While

in Liberia, Duncan was believed to be helping

an Ebola infected woman get to a local hospital

and receive treatment. However, the hospital

later sent her back home due to lack of space in

the Ebola treatment ward. She died later on that

day due to lack of treatment. Unfortunately, the

disease got the best of Duncan as well. He was

pronounced dead on Oct. 8 at 7:51 a.m.

However, Ebola may not be as serious

as some may think. According to the Centers

for Disease Control and Prevention, CDC for

short, Ebola cannot be transmitted through the

air, water, or food sources. Ebola can only be

transmitted through the direct contact with a

human, or animal that has had Ebola. You can

get it through blood or body fluids (including

but not limited to urine, saliva, sweat, feces,

vomit, breast milk, and semen) of a person who

is sick with Ebola, and objects (like needles

and syringes) that have been contaminated with

the virus. The CDC also states that some of

the symptoms may include: fever, weakness,

headache, stomach pain, fatigue, lack of appetite,

diarrhea, unexplained bleeding, vomiting, and

joint and muscle aches.

Furthermore, just to clarify, there are no

such things as “Ebola Zombies.” The picture

circulating around the internet is a photo shopped

The Science Club is a new group meeting on campus. The first experiment they did was called elephant toothpaste. Using dish

soap, food coloring and yeast and hydrogen peroxide, this combination created so much foam that it could be used to brush an elephant’s teeth. If you are interested in joining the Science Club, talk to sponsors Mrs. Haby and Mrs. Oefinger. Meetings will be after school on Tuesdays

The purpose of the Science Club is to inspire high school youth to reach their full potential in science by providing them with access to exciting authentic, hands on activities, enthusiastic science mentors, and a supportive environment. The main goal of science club is increasing scientific knowledge and awareness by youth, understanding science’s relevance, and encouraging youth to pursue elective science and related opportunities, especially in research.

Members must attend a minimum of 50% of scheduled meetings and participate in activities during the school year to qualify for any training travel or social events. Students are viewed as ambassadors of Hondo High School and are expected to behave in a responsible and mature manner. Failure to do so may result in expulsion from the organizations. David Rhin is the president. Jess Copeland is vice president. Emma Long is secretary. Jacob Kelling is treasurer.

The Mighty Owl band received a division 1 at the

UIL Region 11 1A-4A Marching contest Oct. 18 hosted at Barry Field, performing “Interstellar Overdrive.” Prior to the UIL performance the band participated in two contests, Drums Along Medina at Southwest high school and Harlandale’s marching contest at Harlandale High School. The marching show titled, “Interstellar Overdrive” consisted of 3 songs “Fanfare”, “Interstellar Overdrive”, and “Hammer of the Gods “written by Mr. Steward. After the Mighty Owl band received a Division 1 at the UIL Marching contest, they went on to perform at the Area E Marching Contest in Corpus Christi at Calallen High School. The band received 4th place at Drum’s Along the Medina, 2nd out of 7 at Harlandale’s marching competition along with getting titled “Best Colorgaurd” and “Best Percussion”, and 20th out of 32 bands at the Area E marching contest in Calallen. Mr. Steward was very proud of the marching band this season.

Mighty Owl Band makes it to area The

Hondo Owls

girls varsity basketball team is ranked 17th in the state. On October 22, the Owls started right where they left off last February, once again on a mission to protect the dream.

Every year the Owls take on the characteristics of an animal that describes their team. This year they decided a BEAR would best describe them and they took it one step further and said, “If you’re gonna be a bear be a grizzly.”

Coach Denton said “This year we lost five seniors that have contributed to the program in the past years. Therefore the biggest struggles that we will face this season are roles changing.” Although the Owls have 3 starter returners, overall they are a young team with 3 seniors,

4 juniors, and 3 sophomores. The Owls plan this year is to “outwork their opponents, and to make their school and community proud.”

The Owls faced Knippa and the Medina Valley Panthers in their 1st two scrimmages. On Nov. 28-29 the Owls will be traveling to Harlingen to compete in their tournament. The Owls will also be hosting the 34th annual Hondo Tournament this year. They will also be traveling to Boerne on Dec 29-30 to participate in their tournament. This season the Owls will be facing several non- district teams like 5A Laredo Cigarroa, 5A Uvalde, 5A Medina Valley, and 6A DelRio. The Owls new district consists of: Boerne, Fredericksburg, Devine, Bandera, and Lytle. Come on out and support your Hondo Owls Girls Varsity Team. See schedules on page 4.
