SCOOTER SAFETYIMPORTANT SAFETY INFORMATION

Your scooter can provide many years ofservice and pleasure – if you takeresponsibility for your own safety andunderstand the challenges that you can meeton the road.

There is much that you can do to protectyourself when you ride. You’ll find many helpfulrecommendations throughout this manual.Following are a few that we consider mostimportant.

Always Wear a Helmet

It’s a proven fact: Helmets significantly reducethe number and severity of head injuries. Soalways wear a helmet and make sure yourpassenger does the same. We also recommendthat you wear eye protection, sturdy boots, gloves and other protective gear (page 3).

Make Yourself Easy to see

Some drivers do not see scooters becausethey are not looking for them. To makeyourself more visible, wear bright reflectiveclothing, position yourself so other driverscan see you, signal before turning orchanging lanes, and use your horn whenrequired, it will help others notice you.

Don’t Drink and Ride

Alcohol and riding don’t mix. Even one drinkcan reduce your ability to respond to changingconditions, and your reaction time gets worsewith every additional drink. So don’t drink andride, and don’t let your friends drink andride either.

Page 10: Honda Activa Std & Dlx Owners Manual

2

Ride Within Your Limits

Pushing the limits is another major cause ofscooter accidents. Never ride beyond yourpersonal abilities or faster than conditionswarrant. Remember that alcohol, drugs, fatigueand inattention can significantly reduce yourability to make good judgements and ridesafely.

Keep Your Vehicle in Safe Condition

For safe riding, it is important to inspect yourscooter before every ride and perform allrecommended maintenance. Never exceedload limits, and only use accessories thathave been approved by Honda for thisscooter. See page 5 for more details.

PROTECTIVE APPAREL

For your safety, we strongly recommendthat you always wear an approved scooterhelmet, eye protection, boots, gloves, longpants and a long-sleeved shirt or jacketwhenever you ride. Although completeprotection is not possible, wearing propergear can reduce the chance of injury whenyou ride.

Following are suggestions to help you chooseproper gear.

WARNING

Not wearing a helmet increases thechance of serious injury or death in acrash.

Be sure you and your passengeralways wear a helmet, eye protectionand other protective apparel when youride.

!

3

Helmets and Eye Protection

Your helmet is your most important pieceof riding gear because it offers the bestprotection against head injuries. A helmetshould fit your head comfortably and securely.A bright-colored helmet can make you morenoticeable in traffic, as can reflective strips.

An open-face helmet offers some protection, but a full-face helmet offers more. Alwayswear a face shield or goggles to protect youreyes and help your vision.

Additional Riding Gear

In addition to a helmet and eye protection,we also recommend:

• Sturdy boots with non-slip soles to helpprotect your feet and ankles.

• Leather gloves to keep your handswarm and help prevent blisters, cuts, burns and bruises.

• A scooter riding suit or jacket forcomfort as well as protection. Bright-colored and reflective clothing can helpmake you more noticeable in traffic.Be sure to avoid loose clothes thatcould get caught on any part of yourscooter.

TYRES

To safely operate your scooter, your tyresmust be the proper type and size, in goodcondition with adequate tread, and correctlyinflated for the load you are carrying. Thefollowing pages give more detailedinformation on how and when to check yourair pressure, how to inspect your tyres fordamage, and what to do when your tyresneed to be repaired or replaced.

WARNING

Using tyres that are excessively worn orimproperly inflated can cause a crash inwhich you can be seriously hurt or killed.

Follow all instructions in this owner’smanual regarding tyre inflation andmaintenance.

Air Pressure

Keeping your tyres properly inflatedprovides the best combination of handling, tread life and riding comfort. Generally, underinflated tyres wear unevenly, adversely affect handling, and are morelikely to fail from being overheated.

Overinflated tyres make your scooter ridemore harsh, are more prone to damagefrom road hazards and wear unevenly.

We recommend that you visually checkyour tyres before every ride and use a gaugeto measure air pressure at least once amonth or any time you think the tyres airpressure might be low.

Always check air pressure when tyres are“cold”– when the scooter has been parkedfor at least three hours. If you check airpressure when tyres are “warm”- When thescooter has been ridden for even a few milesthe readings will be higher than if the tyreswere “cold”. This is normal so do not let air

Page 29: Honda Activa Std & Dlx Owners Manual

21

out of the tyres to match the recommendedcold air pressures given below. If you do,the tyres will be underinflated.

The recommended “Cold” tyre air pressuresare:

kPa (kgf/cm², psi)

Driver Front 150 (1.50, 22)only Rear 200 (2.00, 29)

Driver and Front 150 (1.50, 22)one passenger Rear 250 (2.50, 36)

This scooter is fitted with TUFFUP tube onlyin rear wheel. Compared with ordinary tyretubes, the TUFFUP tube releases little airwhen punctured by a nail or other similarobject. For this reason even though theyremain fully inflated, it is important toregularly check the tyres for embeddedobjects.

The TUFFUP tube is not intended to preventtyre puncture completely. It is not effectivein damage or L-shaped cut in the treadsurface, or damage or cut in the tyre otherthan the tread surface.

Inspection

Whenever you check the tyre pressures, you should also examine the tyre treadsand sidewalls for wear, damage, and foreignobjects:

Look for:

• Bumps or bulges in the side of the tyreor the tread. Replace the tyre if youfind any bumps or bulges.

• Cuts, splits or cracks in the tyre.Replace the tyre if you can see fabricor cord.

• Excessive tread wear.

Page 30: Honda Activa Std & Dlx Owners Manual

22

Also, if you hit a pothole or hard object, pullto the side of the road as soon as you safelycan and carefully inspect the tyres fordamage.

Tread Wear

Inspect the wear indicator (1) to check forinsufficient tread depth. If the wear indicatoris visible, the tyre should be replaced.

Tube Repair and Replacement

If a tube is punctured or damaged, youshould replace it as soon as possible. A tubethat is repaired may not have the samereliability as a new one, and it may fail whileyou are riding.

Incase of Activa (Deluxe)

Page 31: Honda Activa Std & Dlx Owners Manual

23

If you need to make a temporary repairby patching a tube or using an aerosolsealant, ride cautiously at reduced speedand have the tube replaced before you rideagain. Any time a tube is replaced, the tyreshould be carefully inspected as describedon page 22.When replacing a TUFFUP tube, be sure toselect the size appropriate for the tyreBecause of the special construction of theTUFFUP tube, it should always be repairedor replaced by your Honda dealer.Tyre ReplacementThe tyres that came on your scooter weredesigned to match the performancecapabilities of your scooter and provide thebest combination of handling, braking, durability and comfort.

The recommended tyres for your scooterare:

Incase of Activa (Standard)

Front :90/100-10 53J

Rear: 90/100-10 53J

Incase of Activa (Deluxe)

Front :90/100-10 53J - Zapper

Rear: 90/100-10 53J - Zapper

Whenever you replace a tyre, use one thatis equivalent to the original and be sure thewheel is balanced after the new tyre isinstalled.

Also remember to replace the inner tubewhenever you replace a tyre. The old tubewill probably be stretched, and if installed ina new tyre, it could fail.

WARNINGInstalling improper tyres on yourscooter can affect handling andstability. This can cause a crash inwhich you can be seriously hurt orkilled.Always use the size and type of tyresrecommended in this owner’s manual.

CATALYTIC CONVERTER

This Scooter is equipped with a catalytic converter.

The catalytic converter contains precious metals that serve as catalysts. promoting chemicalreactions to convert the exhaust gasses without affecting the metals.

The catalytic converter acts on HC, CO, and NOx. A replacement unit must be an originalHonda part or its equivalent.

The catalytic converter must operate at a high temperature for the chemical reactions totake place. It can set on fire any combustible materials that come near it. Mark yourscooter away from high grasses, dry leaves, or other flammables.

A defective catalytic converter contributes to air pollution, and can impair your engine’sperformance. Follow these guidelines to protect your motorcycle’s catalytic converter.

• Always use unleaded petrol. Even a small amount of leaded petrol can contaminatethe catalyst metals, making the catalytic converter ineffective.

• Keep the engine tuned-up.

• Have your scooter diagnosed and replaced if it is misfiring, backfiring stalling or otherwisenot running properly.
