After reading this piece, I am undecided between both because the student acted professional by being polite and using proper language, but he also was stupid for coming into class an hour late and the professor had some valid points, but he was being a jerk. The student expressed to the professor he was disappointed about being asked to leave the class. The student was using appropriate greetings such as Prof. and regards. When the student says “I would like to discuss a matter with you that bothered me” and “I just wanted to be open and provide my opinion on the matter” he is keeping a professional manner while he is still showing his frustration and complaint. The professor brings up valid points by saying “Your logic effectively means you cannot be held accountable for any code of conduct before taking a class” and “There is a baseline level of decorum (i.e., manners) that we expect of grown men and women who the admissions department have deemed tomorrow’s business leaders.” I agree because when I am sitting in class and someone walks in 20 minutes late I think it is rude and disruptive. Although the professor’s points are valid, telling a student to “Get your shit together” is unprofessional and rude. I believe a teacher has a right to demand certain standards of behavior when a student is being rude and not listening to their rules within their class. I also think it is the same for a boss or an employer. If a student or an employee does not do the necessary work, then a professor or a boss can demand better behavior. I have had a boss tell me “Fine you can be in charge tonight” since I told her there was not enough room to set up a party of twenty next to the bar on the busiest night because it would be a fire hazard. I felt like that crossed the line of certain standards of behavior because she said it in front of other employees. In the email exchange, I believe the professor was right to demand certain behaviors because it is rude for a student to walk into class an hour late, but the professor should have been more professional when responding. It does not matter that it is a graduate student. A graduate student and an undergraduate level student should know that it is wrong to show up to a class an hour late because it is disruptive and rude.

After reading the professor’ stance, I would take his class. Even though, he responded rudely to the student’s email, I feel the professor is a good teacher because he takes his profession seriously and does not like disrupting students. After reading the student’s response, I would not work with him because he was late since he was interested in three classes and they were at the same time. I think he is not good at planning or time management.
