Note Guiding Questions- Pg. 39Answer all in complete sentences

• 1. Explain the different divisions of the nervous system.

• 2. What is the difference between the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system?

• 3. What is the difference between the autonomic and somatic nervous system?

• 4. Why do you think scientists have divided the nervous system this way?

Somatic

How is the nervous system organized? CNS vs. PNS

CNS

• Central Nervous System

• Brain and spinal cord

• Encased in bone (why?)

• Higher functions: intelligence, emotion, memory... you!

PNS

• Peripheral Nervous System

• Everything else: nerves outside of CNS

Autonomic vs. Somatic• Autonomic Nervous System (ANS): part of the PNS that controls

involuntary functions i.e. you can’t control it– ex. heart rate, digestion, breathing, salivation– Sounds like automatic– Also called visceral nervous system– Uses smooth and cardiac muscle

• Somatic Nervous System (SoNS): part of PNS that controls voluntary functions i.e. you can control– Ex. Raise your hand– Uses skeletal muscles
