HomeSense Team Nigel Gilbert is Professor and Director of the Centre for Research in Social Simulaon at University of Surrey and the HomeSense PI. He read for a first degree in Engineering, and obtained his doctorate on the sociology of scienfic knowledge from the University of Cambridge. His research and teaching interests have reflected his connuing interest in both sociology and computer science (and engineering more widely). His main research interests are processual theories of social phenomena, the development of computaonal sociology and the methodology of computer simulaon, especially agent-based modelling. Nigel Gilbert Klaus Moessner is Professor in Cognive Networks in the 5G Innovaon Centre and the Co-PI of HomeSense. He has been acvely involved in the various European Community funded research frameworks. He has also had involvement in some 20 other EU funded projects. Klaus’ research interests are around the aspects of reconfigurability on the different system levels, including reconfiguraon management and scheduling in wireless networks as well as network supported adaptability of mulmodal user interfaces. Her background covers conceptual/visual ICT designs, IT administraon and development, philosophy and sociology. Her PhD is a study in ethnomethodology in reference to CSCW, acvity and cognive theories. Most recently, she worked on three FP7-funded projects, Epinet, ICTethics and Technolife, all case-based invesgaons into the ethical, legal and socio-economic implicaons of new- emerging ICTs, as well as of public percepon and future scenario-building in innovaon policy development and governance. HomeSense Team

Jie Jiang is a Research Fellow in Computational SocialScience at the Centre for Research in Social Simulation atUniversity of Surrey. She obtained her Bachelor and MasterDegrees both in Engineering. She continued studying a PhDat Delft University of Technology, researching on theproblem of organisational compliance through normativemulti-agent system design and verification. Her researchinterests include design and verification of sociotechnicalsystems, agent-based modelling and simulation, dataanalytics and machine learning.

Jie JiangEwa Luger is the Microsoft liaison to HomeSense, consultingon ethical and consent issues. She works in the HumanExperience and Design group at Microsoft ResearchCambridge and holds a Fellowship at Corpus Christi College,University of Cambridge. Previously a research fellow at theMixed Reality Lab, University of Nottingham, and her focusis upon applied ethics, and how we might design userexperiences that support human agency and autonomy.

Ewa LugerWilliam Headley is Technical Project Manager at Universityof Surrey. He built the HomeSense sensor suite prototype.His research interests include Silicon photonics, ringresonators, optoelectronics, PLC's (planar lightwave circuits),optical modulators and filters. He is now responsible for theday-to-day management and contribution to an EU-sponsored project which seeks to advance the commercialintroduction of future internet technologies.

Niels BischofDebbie Collins leads NatCen’s Questionnaire Developmentand Testing Hub and has over 20 years’ experience in surveyresearch and methodology. She specialises in questionnairedesign and the use of pretesting methods, such as cognitiveinterviewing, questionnaire appraisal, respondent debriefingand focus groups. Debbie has worked on a range of studiesincluding development of questions for the 2001 Census(whilst at ONS), the Family Resources Survey, the NationalTravel Survey and European Social Survey. Debbie is amember of the International Questionnaire EvaluationStandards working group. She has also conducted researchinto factors influencing respondents' decisions to participatein surveys.

Debbie CollinsMartin Dix is the founder of both the Current Cost Conceptand the Business, and more recently also Current Care.Martin still takes an active role in the business as ManagingDirector, overseeing operations and ensuring the businessstrategy is dynamic enough to respond to changes in themarketplace.

Niels van Dijk is a post-doctoral research fellow at the Centrefor Law Science Technology and Society at the VrijeUniversiteit Brussels (VUB). He holds a PhD degree in law bythe VUB, and LLM and MA degrees in law and philosophy bythe University of Amsterdam. His research focuses mainly onthe challenges posed by new (digital) technologies topractices of law, especially in the fields of intellectual rights,privacy and data protection. Further fields of his interestinclude: legal theory, philosophy of science, science andtechnology studies (STS) and ethnography of legalinstitutions.

Niels van DijkJonathan Gershuny is Professor of Economic Sociology in theOxford Sociology Department, and a Senior Research Fellowof Nuffield College. He is the Director of the Centre for TimeUse Research, and is a former Head of the Oxford SociologyDepartment. He started to study how people spend theirtime in the late 1970s. The Multinational Time Use Study,which emerged from his early work, now includes accountsof more than 800,000 days, collected from 20 countries, overthe period from 1961 to 2013.

Jonathan GershunyDaniel Gómez López is Assistant Professor at the UniversitatOberta de Catalunya (Open University of Catalonia), in theDepartment of Psychology and Education, and also aresearcher for Care and Preparedness in Network Society(CareNet), research group at the Internet InterdisciplinaryInstitute (IN3). He has been involved in FP7-funded projects:CUIDAR, DEMOCIT AND EFORTT. He has been Marie-CuriePostdoctoral researcher at the LSTS (Vrije Universitet Brussel)working on ethical and social aspects of ICT innovations forolder and disabled people (VALUE-AGEING) and visitingresearcher at CSISP (Goldsmiths College, University ofLondon).

Mark Hill has over 20 years’ experience in thesemiconductor, information technology and communicationindustries. He has covered a huge range of technologies,including microprocessors at the circuit level, digitalhardware, software, networking and communications, andspent 15 years in the City delivering complex and varied ITsystems. Currently COO of OpenTRV, an IoT startup designingintelligent Thermostatic Radiator Valves (TRVs) with the aimof reducing the entire UK's carbon emissions by 10%.

Mark HillIke Kamphof is Assistant Professor at the Department ofPhilosophy at Maastricht University. She holds a PhD inPhilosophy from the University of Leuven. At the Faculty ofArts and Social Sciences in Maastricht, Ike Kamphof isinvolved in the MA Media Culture. Her current researchfocuses on two main fields: (tele)presence and (tele)care,and the relationship between aesthetic sensibility and ethicalaffect. Ike did extensive fieldwork into sensortechnologies asused in homecare for vulnerable elderly people. She iscurrently projectleader of funded research into aspects ofmake-believe in technological innovations for dementia care.

Ike Kamphof

Naomi Klepacz is a Research Fellow at the Food, ConsumerBehaviour and Health Research Centre at the University ofSurrey. She holds a PhD health psychology and her researchinterests focus on health communication and promotion, andfall under the umbrella of applied health psychology. She isparticularly interested in the role of visual imagery inpeople’s understanding of health and memory for healthrelated information. She has an interest also in healthdamaging behaviour and psychological interventions used forprimary prevention, as well as the processes influencing theeffective delivery of health care and its impact on individuals,family members and caregivers. Naomi has experience ofconducting research both as part of both UK and EU fundedprojects, employing both qualitative and quantitativemethods.

Sacha Krstulović is the VP of Technology at Audio AnalyticLtd. He was a Senior Research Engineer at Nuance’sAdvanced Speech Group where he worked on pushing thelimits of large scale speech recognition services such asVoicemail-to-Text and Voice-Based Mobile Assistants. Prior tothat, he was a Research Engineer at Toshiba Research EuropeLtd., developing novel Text-To-Speech synthesis approachesable to learn from data. He is passionate about researchingand developing automatic recognition of sound where AudioAnalytic is building significant leadership.

Sacha KrstulovićAndrew Nelson was appointed Tunstall Group EngineeringDirector in November 2012. Previously he worked as VP ofEngineering for Pace Micro – worldwide No1 Pay TV set topbox supplier. He has worked 10 years at Motorola mobiledevices in a number of roles in operations, programme andengineering management.

Andrew NelsonMark Plumbley is Professor of Signal Processing in the Centrefor Vision, Speech and Signal Processing (CVSSP) at Universityof Surrey. His research concerns the analysis and processingof audio and music, using a wide range of signal processingtechniques, including independent component analysis (ICA)and sparse representations. He is coordinating two EU-funded Marie CurieInitial/Innovative Training Networks (ITNs) in SparseRepresentations/Compressed Sensing and Machine Sensing,and he Leads EPSRC projects on "Musical Audio Repurposingusing Source Separation" and "Making Sense of Sounds".

Blaine Price is Senior Lecturer in Computing at The OpenUniversity. He is interested in privacy in mobile andubiquitous computing and in lifelogging technologies inparticular, including both personal lifelogging and loggingenergy and resource usage. He is currently studying howinvisible and automatic lifelogging data can be used byordinary people to gain insights about their life. He iscurrently a co-investigator on the 5 year ERC funded ASAP(Adaptive Security and Privacy) where he is looking atsecurity and privacy issues in lifelogging. He is also a co-investigator on the EPSRC funded Privacy Dynamics Project.He is principal investigator on the EPSRC funded projectMonetize Me: Privacy and the Quantified Self in the DigitalEconomy.

Blaine PricePaul Quinn is Professor at Vrije Universiteit Brussel. He isactive in pursuing a number of his research interests,including in areas such as data protection, privacy issues andproblems related to stigmatization and discrimination. Withrespect to the first of these, he has developed an expertise inprivacy and data protection issues in the area of health caredelivery. He is in particular interested in the evolving use ofpatient data in health care delivery and has published anumber of articles on these issues.

Paul Quinn

Monique Raats is Professor and the Director of the Food,Consumer Behaviour and Health Research Centre atUniversity of Surrey. Her expertise is in the area of publichealth and behavioural nutrition research, gained on avariety of projects. Her research is wide ranging both interms of topics covered (e.g. food choice, policydevelopment, food safety) and methodologies used (e.g.qualitative, quantitative, stakeholder consultation). She hasalso been involved in the evaluation of health promotionprogrammes and developing tools for use in nutritioneducation.Monique Raats
