Northumberland Wildlife Trust was founded in 1971 to protect wildlife and promote nature conservation within Newcastle, North Tyneside and Northumberland. Today, our voice for wildlife is stronger than ever. We are a non-government funded charity, supported by membership, donations, local businesses and charitable trust grants.

There are 46 local Wildlife Trusts across the whole of the UK, the Isle of Man and Alderney, all working for an environment rich in wildlife for everyone.

With 850,000 members, we are the largest UK voluntary organisation dedicated to conserving the full range of the UK’s habitats and species, whether they be in the countryside, in cities, or at sea. 135,000 of our members belong to our junior branch, Wildlife Watch.

All 46 Wildlife Trusts are members of the Royal Society of Wildlife Trusts (RSWT) which operates a separate Grants Unit administering major funds on behalf of the Big Lottery Fund and the Landfill Communities Fund.

We are looking to appoint a confident, innovative and enthusiastic person to join our team, as a Conservation assistant. The main functions of this role are to:

Help deliver the conservation function of the Trust including responding to planning applications, helping with the Local Wildlife Sites work and responding to the public with conservation queries.

Work closely with colleagues to support Conservation delivery and survey.

Help with species and habitat data handling and with conservation focussed events.

The role is for 35 hours per week and the contract is for a 24 month period at the outset with opportunities for continuation.

The salary starts at £16,305 per annum.

Main responsibilities Help to oversee the Local Wildlife Sites system including opportunities

for review and provision of data to third parties. Checking current planning applications and responding where

appropriate Managing data on species or habitats and helping deliver surveys Responding to queries regarding conservation and wildlife matters

from the public and local groups Helping colleagues deliver conservation value in projects Organising and helping to run conservation based events and activities

for the Trust Working with volunteers including volunteer placements to deliver

conservation activity for the Trust Developing, with colleagues, smaller scale conservation projects and

helping with the fundraising for these. Helping to develop the concepts of nature recovery networks in the

area Attending some meetings on behalf of the Head of Living Landscapes

and Conservation. Undertake other work as required

Salary bandScale B £16,305 per annum. A further 5% is payable into the Trust’s Stakeholder Pension scheme after

three months, conditional on the employee contributing at least 5% of salary.

Holidays22 days basic, plus the period between Christmas and New Year and all English bank holidays. Where these are worked time off in lieu is given. After three years’ service, an additional day’s leave will be awarded for each year worked, up to a maximum of 5.

Hours35 hours per week. This role will require some weekend work, occasional bank holidays, and some evenings. NWT operates a flexitime system.

TravelA driving licence is essential as this job requires frequent travel. Pool vehicles are available for staff use if required. Mileage and subsistence are paid for use of own vehicle where necessary.

Contract, probation and noticeThe job is offered on a 2-year contract.There is a probationary period of six months.A minimum of 4 weeks’ notice is required from either party.

Person specification

Knowledge, skills and attributes

E ssential attributes Knowledge of nature conservation and wildlife. Knowledge of the planning system particularly in relation to nature

conservation. Good written communication skills. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Good ICT skills (fully conversant with Microsoft Office) including data

handling. Good presentation skills. Good attention to detail.

Desirable Specific knowledge of an aspect of British wildlife.

Essential Experience of undertaking wildlife surveys. Experience with working with volunteers and managing volunteer

teams. Experience of presentations to general and specialist audiences.

Desirable Experience of site management for nature conservation. Experience of commenting on planning applications. Experience of drawing up funding applications. Experience of environmental education.

Qualifications

Desirable Relevant degree or equivalent experience.

Personality

Essential Excellent planner and organiser. Excellent communicator. Outgoing, enthusiastic and friendly. Highly motivated. Flexible. Team player.
