Peer to Peer Outreach to Further Landowner Assistance and Education

One of the action areas identified by attendees at the “Future of Family-Owned Woodlands in the United States” is the promotion of effective “peer to peer” outreach programs. Peer to Peer outreach -- and landowner mentoring programs are often successful in engaging landowners that have not previously pursued or responded to traditional landowner assistance programs.

Some of the conference attendees have been developing a plan to identify peer to peer an community based family forestry projects around the country, to analyze them for “effective practices” and to develop “how to” resource materials based on these findings.

The following is a list of programs that the group has thus far identified:

Alabama

Master Wildlifer: Wildlife on Private LandsMaster Wildlifer is designed for landowners, land managers, and outdoors recreationists who are interested in including wildlife considerations into their current land management activities. Master Tree Farmer ProgramThe Master Tree Farmer Program is an intensive educational program designed to introduce landowners to many of the topics associated with forest management. The Master Tree Farmer courses are the only satellite broadcasts of their kind for forest landowners throughout the South. Each participating state land grant university has a coordinator making arrangements for their programs. Clemson University serves as the host for the programs.

Master Tree Care and Woodland StewardshipThis program focuses on tree care and woodland stewardship issues for private landowners. We try to provide a broad introduction to tree care and development and aspects of woodland stewardship as influenced by our cold climate and boreal forest setting. We try to include contemporary issues in forest land management for the region and provide ample opportunities for discussion and development of individualized management plans for their property.

Arizona Master Naturalist/Watershed StewardThe Master Naturalist program in Coconino County is directed at creating a corps of well-informed volunteers to deliver quality environmental education programs and to assist in the stewardship of Arizona's natural environment. This program merged curriculums with the statewide Master Watershed Stewards in the autumn of 2005, bridging on the ground research and mitigation with education and interpretation.

The Wildlife Master ProgramThe Wildlife Master Program is designed to prevent or mitigate human-wildlife conflict issues by sharing research-based information about human-wildlife interaction with community residents. Volunteers complete in-depth training on areas of wildlife damage management, nuisance wildlife regulations, registered products, exclusion techniques, and zoonotic disease transmission and then provide this information to clients who may be experiencing wildlife conflicts.

Master Wildlife Conservationist ProgramSince 1997 the Florida Master Wildlife Conservationist program has trained Extension volunteers to teach K-12 students and adult citizens in the Tallahassee/Big Bend area of Florida’s Panhandle. The MWC program’s intensive, field-based training course has varied in focus from North Florida’s regional ecosystems and fauna, to disturbance ecology-based wildlife management for private lands, to wildlife habitat enhancement for golf courses and passive parks, to regional springshed hydrogeology and conservation. MWCs have found a niche installing and monitoring wildlife practice demonstrations on public lands and assisting with Extension environmental education programs. MWCs have staffed Environmental Service Learning projects involving elementary and middle school classes. They have staffed displays and tours at wildlife events. Many have assisted agency biologists with field research or monitoring projects.

Earth Connections Volunteers: Creating Sustainable CommunitiesEarth Connections Volunteers: Creating Sustainable Communities is a volunteer development program with the vision that participants “see themselves as part of an interconnected world and are committed to creating a sustainable future." The goals of the program are to: 1) develop a corps of volunteers committed to conducting community outreach and leadership; 2) disseminate research-based information on ecology, natural resource management, sustainable living, and healthy lifestyles; and 3) provide a link between Maine citizens and organizations providing conservation, stewardship, and sustainability education, information, and services.Volunteers participate in a 40-hour course of study, and commit to conducting 40 hours of community outreach in collaboration with a community group or school or a conservation organization, or as an independent project of their own design. In ensuing years, the program will be offered to new volunteers, and additional curriculum modules will be offered to previous “graduates” to supplement their skills and knowledge, and provide further focus to their continued outreach efforts.

survival needs, components of habitat, principles for managing habitat, use of native plant species in the settled landscape, and designing the home landscape as wildlife habitat. Habitat Stewards choose volunteer activities that match their interests. Focusing on the settled landscape, Habitat Stewards educate people to create and restore wildlife habitat in their yards, schoolyards and other private and public areas. Habitat Stewards volunteer 30 hours for the 30 hours of training they receive the first year. In subsequent years, training opportunities are offered in exchange for continuing the volunteer commitment.
