Vintage GlamIf you are looking for a feminine space you’ll be glad to hear that all things girlie are very popular this year. You can pull off the pretty look by mixing textures, vintage pieces of furniture and modern frames and surfaces. You must think of matching the old world with the new and add glamorous touches where you can such as in the light fittings or by adding golden ornate framed mirrors to the wall.

Traditional with a Touch of ContemporaryYou may want a timeless look yet feel that you do want to make the most of modern design you can do so by using color. Purchase traditional style cupboards to create that traditional vibe yet use bright colors on the walls to bring everything into the 21st Century. Alternatively, you could choose very sleek cabinets with slick lines and match it to classic colors on the wall or a fancy chandelier hanging from the ceiling. Go for things you like and don’t feel like you have to stick to one type of design style.

It is where you keep all of your food and if you cook at home it is where your schedule revolves around. That being said, how do you know when to replace it? Well let us help you with a few tips about how your refrigerator works and what you need to know about it.The life expectancy of a standard size refrigerator is 14 to 17 years, so your refrigerator may still be doing the job. While purchasing a new one may not seem like a practical expense if yours is still working, just know that old ice box may be costing you money in the long run, especially if it was made pre-2000. With the advances in energy-efficiency, a new purchase may lower your electric bill now, and who wouldn’t want the security in knowing that a brand new one will last you until around 2030. Aside from just the age of it, there are other warning sides you need to be on the lookout for, when it comes to refrigerators. If you have noticed that your water isn’t as cold as it once was, and that you’re food doesn’t last as long as it should, that is a sure fire way to know old-faithful is on its last legs. Also, having to set the temperature lower just to keep the interior of the refrigerator cold enough to preserve your food is a signal that you should replace the refrigerator. If your refrigerator motor runs constantly, that means it’s working too hard to attempt to keep your food cold. Condensation around the doorframe, and a warm touch on the outside also is a sign that it is working too hard and it is time to change your fridge. Refrigerator features and technology have come a long way, and keeping an out-dated model might cost you hundreds of dollars in the long run.

Purchasing a new refrigerator may save more in the long run than what you spend to purchase one. Once you get past the initial sticker shock, the price of an energy-efficient refrigerator is really quite a bargain, especially compared with older models. New refrigerators require 75 percent LESS energy to operate than refrigerators manufactured 20 to 25 years ago. This fact alone represents a potential savings of $100 per year. In addition, many appliance and department stores run frequent sales on household appliances, including refrigerators. It’s entirely possible to find an 18 cubic foot refrigerator for less than $450! That is a steal! If you allow yourself to get caught in the sticker-shock mode and decide to repair your old unit, it may do you more harm than good. Repairs could cost hundreds of dollars, and not even salvage the refrigerator, forcing you to buy a new one anyway. If you decide to purchase a new refrigerator, don’t keep the old one around as a spare. Running two refrigerators demands more electricity than running a single refrigerator of the same size. On the other hand, don’t buy a larger refrigerator than you actually need. A rule of thumb is to start with 10 cubic feet for a household of two, then add an additional cubic foot of storage space for each additional person. Therefore, a refrigerator between 16.5 and 17.5 cubic feet should be sufficiently large for a family of four. A family of six might need a refrigerator that is 20 cubic feet. Now that you have the knowledge and tips on when to replace your refrigerator, it’s time to go and spend money now, to save you money in the future!

WHEN TO

REPLACE YOUR

REFRIGERATOR?

Now as you may already know, your refrigerator is the life source of your home.

catch aLessen your chances of being robbed

Unfortunately, burglaries happen every day and night, in the big cities, suburbs and rural areas, at any time of the year. No one is exempt from thieves. However, there are precautions you can take whenever you leave your home unattended. There are common sense preventive steps you can take to help keep your home burglar-proof. Clear away bushes and tree branches close to the house, especially those near windows where it may be easy to get into the house without being seen. If you plan to be away for several days, make arrangements with a neighbor to take in your mail and pick up the morning newspaper or flyers tossed on your driveway. Keeping keys under the mat is like saying to anyone “Here is the key to my house, come on in.” Instead, give a spare key to a trusted friend or family member. A little fibbing helps too. Even if you don’t have a dog, hang a “Beware of Dog” sign in the window or put a security alarm company sign in the yard. However, the best way to protect your home is to have a security alarm system with monitoring installed. The alarm alone is sufficient to scare away most burglars, but adding cameras will not only help you protect your home, but may be used to catch the thief.

According to police reports, one of the top items stolen from homes and businesses is copper, and we aren’t talking about pennies. Copper is in the wires and pipes inside your walls and air conditioner units. Imagine the holes in your walls and damaged A/C unit. The cost to repair these because of theft can get quite expensive and will make you steaming mad. If a burglar gets through your common sense preventive tactics, the only solution is a security alarm system. Even the A/C unit can be rigged with a special device that ties into the alarm. Armed with these tips and a security system, you can ease your mind that you have done what you can to lessen your chances of being robbed.

NEW PUPPY

TIPSTIPSHave you ever visited a dog rescue? There are so many dogs to fall in love with. Where do you start when you want to adopt a rescue puppy? We asked an expert, Nick Shalton from Off Leash K9 Training. Nick has 10 years of experience training dogs. Formally in the military, he attended college to pursue a degree and career in psychology and criminal justice. But, Nick always had a passion for training dogs. After meeting the founder of Off Leash K9 Training, he knew that he had found the career he always wanted. Nick brought Off Leash to the Florida area and has been helping dogs throughout the area ever since. He trains dogs ranging from service dogs to household pets. His specially developed training system works for any dog. We asked Nick some of the common questions people have rescuing a new puppy. HT: What are some of the things to look for when picking a puppy?Nick: The most important thing in any dog is confidence. This is the thing you should look for in your walk through of a kennel. Watch for body language in puppies. When you are first introduced, the puppy should be confident, not cowering or afraid. Most dogs bite out of fear, so you want to choose a family dog that is not fearful of you. Your puppy should show signs of being assured and unfrightened. A more experienced handler would be more appropriate for the adoption of fearful dogs.

HT: What should you have prepared when you bring my puppy home?Nick: The most basic things to have are food, safe chew toys and a water bowl. You will also need to get a good crate for your dog. Size is very important when it comes

to a crate. You do not want to purchase a crate that is too big or small. You should also have a sturdy collar and a leash for your dog. Before you leave the shelter, you want to check with the staff to see if your puppy has been checked by a vet and if they have all of their shots.

HT: What are some tips for housebreaking your new puppy?Nick: Your dog’s crate is the biggest factor to aid you in training your puppy. They should be able to stand, circle and lay down comfortably in their crate. If there is too much space for your puppy, accidents in the crate can lead to a prolonged process of house training. Each time

you take your dog out, use the same door. You want them to be accustomed to the process being the same each time. Take your dog to the same spot in the yard. After they have followed this pattern, reward them with a small treat. This reinforces the routine to them. When teaching a puppy, you want to make it as easy as possible for them by rewarding each small victory. Do not reward them when they break the routine. If a puppy is trained this way, the instinct of going

outside will stay the same even after you do not use a crate anymore.

HT: What are some of the most common reasons pet owners bring their puppies to obedience school?Nick: There are many, many reasons people use obedience school for their dogs. The most common dilemmas many dog owners have are puppies jumping on people and pulling at their leashes. These are easy problems to correct through obedience school. The most important thing for healthy dog development is confidence.

Some of the hotter trends in bathrooms are as follows:

Larger Showers: Let’s face it, bigger is better. Well, at least we’ve been conditioned to think so. That being said the newest trends are moving towards more airy showers. The bigger showers lead to a more comfortable feeling because you don’t feel constricted by the shower curtain every time you turn. It also is economical in the sense that it allows multiple people to shower at once.

Windows: The bathroom usually has one window, and it is very small leaving more to be desired in terms of scenery and light. Now, master bathrooms are having skyline windows and even bigger windows stationed around the room, so those relaxing in the comfort of their bathtub will have light as well as beautiful scenery to take in while unwinding.

Show me the television: While this idea seems odd at first, it isn’t what you may think. Forget the idea of a massive television in the bathroom because that looks foolish, even in your head. What people are doing is installing small flat-screen TV sets

behind mirrors that are invisible until you turn them on, because sitting in a tub can get boring.

Cabinet Style Storage: Additional storage is a big need in most bathrooms. However, you can’t have huge closets or containers clogging up the place. This new cabinet-style storage invokes a sleek design, allows storage without the feel of clutter. Some cabinet-style storage can even be built into the walls, maximizing space!

His and Her Vanities: Homeowners are asking for his-and-hers sinks and vanities. This allows for each person to have his or her own space and storage, and for each area to have a different aesthetic feel. Sinks continue to become more stylish, too. People are interested in under mounted or vessel sinks that rise up from a base, or faucets that directly come out of the wall. Now that you are armed with the knowledge about what is hot and what is not this year, it’s time to make your bathroom your own personal man or woman cave!

TRENDSBathroom

No longer is your bathroom just a place to clean up and do your ‘business’, today bathrooms signify a place to relax and unwind. The latest trends for remodeling your bathroom have focused on comfort and

luxury, to ensure those who want to relax from their fast-paced lifestyle can do so in peace and quiet.

Floating ShelvesNot only are they attractive and sleek, but they are also a great alternative to cabinets in the kitchen. A growing number of homeowners are choosing to leave open space in the kitchen where they can hang art and other décor. Floating shelves are the perfect compliment to this trend. By freeing the space with these shelves, you can give the illusion of a bigger room, as well as make your rooms more inviting to guests.

Now that you’ve found a new home, the first thought running through the minds of homeowners is how they will be able to move all their stuff. This thought is usually accompanied by fear and dread, but why? Moving can be fun and with a little planning and organization it can be hassle free! Usually, people know they are going to be moving well in advance, and that is the time to start packing. Get yourself a supply of sturdy boxes, which can be found at a storage and moving company or check out your local grocery store, and a lot of newspaper to wrap items. Make sure you pack room by room. For example, start packing up your bathroom and label the boxes “Bathroom.” Pack everything that is not used on a regular basis, and if you haven’t

used it in a long time, toss it. Moving is a great opportunity to get rid of stuff. Remember to leave out the essentials items – toothpaste and brushes, soap, towels - that can be packed at the last minute. Clean out and pack closets next. Be sure to remember to label the boxes as to exactly what closet is packed (Hall closet items). As well as closets, pack up the knick-knacks on bookshelves and tabletops. Always remember label your boxes clearly so you can identify them later. When packing kitchen items, keep out only what you know you will need to use before your actual move date. With these helpful tips, by the time you need to start loading the moving van or trucks, you will be ready to move with little stress!
