Raven told people so many lies thatno one could believe anything he saidanymore, even though people hadalways respected his wisdom of all thethings he had seen as he flew.

"Raven," he said. "You are an oldtimer and know these things. There arepeople coming. What are they doing?"

Raven squawked painfully throughhis nozzle, "Yes, at times these thingshappen,"

"Who are these people?" askedWolf.

"These are wanderers in search ofpeople," said Raven.

"What do they want?" askedMarten.

"Will they kill us?" asked Duck."What should we do?" asked Wolf.Raven shielded his eyes and looked

out onto the lake where the raft wasdrifting closer to the shore.

"Don't be frightened," he said."Here's what to do. When wandererscome, all the people of the villageshould go to the edge of the lake andstand on the shore to greet them. Thisis the proper way to treat wanderers. lfyou do this, nothing bad will happen."

"Let's do that then," said Wolf,And he led the people down to the

water's edge. They shielded their eyesand watched as the raft with thepaddling figures drifted toward them.
