Mongols captured Russia. So, it is not like everyone who dreamt of conquering

Russia failed. But, there is a catch. Also, cold weather is not the only defense

for Russia. I will cover both.

Unlike the time of the Mongols, both Napoleon and Hitler faced a much bigger

and a much stronger Russia. Here is the map of Russia at the time of the

Mongol invasion . It was not just small, it was highly divided and internally

weakened.

Napoleon and Hitler faced a Russia that looked like this. A dozen times bigger

than the one Mongols invaded (the light purple region is the original Russia

before 1500).

More importantly, Mongols took 17 years (1223-1240) to make the invasion.

This gave them enough time to consolidate and build. Both, Napoleon and

Hitler were far more impatient. Napoleon tried his Russian invasion over a

single year (1812) - French invasion of Russia and Hitler tried it over 2 years

in 2 campaigns (1941 and 1942). Operation Barbarossa

No human has ever succeeded in invading that big a territory anywhere

in the world in such short a period.

Why is conquering Russia hard:

1. Russia is maaasive. Russia in 1812 and 1942 was more than 30 times

the size of either France or Germany. Napoleon and Hitler were like tiny

little ants trying to swallow an elephant.

2. Fighting multiple fronts while invading Russia is suicidal. Mongols

were single minded in invading Russia. Both Napoleon and Hitler were

facing multiple fronts while invading Russia. Napoleon was still fighting

rebels in Spain. Hitler was fighting in North Africa and British Channel. You

don't mess with Russia when you are fighting war elsewhere.

3. Russia was infamous for their Scorched earth defence. They would

destroy all the food sources on the way of invading armies. This kind of

brutal self-destruction was not familiar for the invading Western European

armies. Napoleon's horses were starved and eaten by its starving troops.

As the horses were lost, the troops left behind the cannons and other

weaponry.

22 Aug

4. Undeveloped for the most part. Unlike Western Europe, Russia at that

time had fewer roads and the towns were very spaced pretty far. This put a

lot of strain on the invading armies who found it both hard to travel and to

get the resources.

5. Nothingness. Assuming you reach Moscow, what next? You would

assume that your problems are over. But, it is not. Moscow was

surrounded by 100s of kilometers of nothingness. When Napoleon captured

Moscow he found that his troops exhausted all of its resources in weeks.

The nearest major city was 700 kilometers away.

6. Russian weather is brutal. Russia is not just frigid in winter, it can also

be terribly hot in summer (especially the central Asian portion). The

temperature range of Russia is -71C in December to 45C in July. A big

chunk of Napoleon's army died of thirst. The marshes of Ukraine (Pinsk

Marshes ) can be deadly with Malaria - that affected both Hilter's and

Napolon's troops. The Mongols were used to harsh climates. Western

Europeans were not.

All writing is rewriting, anyway. However bad or good your first effort is, you're

There are many symbols compacted into the ouroboros. To more fully grasp

the concept, these symbols must be unpacked.

www.quora.com 28/39

Circle.

A circle has no beginning, no middle, no end. As such, it is a symbol of

immortality. The Japanese symbol ensō is common in calligraphy. It

symbolizes perfection, enlightenment. The symbol is created in one

movement, and there is no possibility for modification. Zen Buddhists believe

that "the character of the artist is fully exposed in how she or he draws an

ensō. Only a person who is mentally and spiritually complete can draw a true

ensō. Some artists will practice drawing an ensō daily, as a kind of spiritual

practice." This is reminiscent of the myth of the perfect circle. The story goes

Giotto drew a perfect circle freehand for Pope Boniface VIII in order to be

commissioned to paint for St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. It is also a symbol of

oneness. It is essentially a line with all points drawn equally towards a single

coordinate.

The animal who eats/swallows its own tail.

Life depends on life. In fact, life depends on the death of life. So life depends

on death. The two must be interconnected.

"Life lives on life. This is the sense of the symbol of the Ouroboros, the

serpent biting its tail. Everything that lives lives on the death of something

else. Your own body will be food for something else. Anyone who denies

this, anyone who holds back, is out of order. Death is an act of giving."

Joseph Campbell

Campbell again:

"The battlefield is symbolic of the field of life, where every creature lives on

the death of another. A realization of the inevitable guilt of life may so

sicken the heart that, like Hamlet or like Arjuna, one may refuse to go on

with it... the goal of the myth is to dispel the need for such life ignorance by

effecting a reconciliation of the individual consciousness with the universal

will. And this is effected through a realization of the true relationship of the

passing phenomena of time to the imperishable life that lives and dies in

all."

Page 29: Home - Quora

www.quora.com 29/39

The ritual of swallowing is often interpreted as a returning to the womb. There

are many stories of man being taken into the belly of the beast (e.g., Jonah).

This is a return to the embyronic state -- the state of total unity and oneness

with another. When the hero is cast forth again, we have a resurrection myth.

Man has died, but is reborn. Dependence becomes autonomy, unity becomes

separation, oneness becomes differentiation. The snake is the mother of man's

second birth. We see this in the Garden of Eden story as well.

Serpent.

The snake is a symbol of transformation. A serpent sheds its skin. Newness

follows loss. Here we see the circular, repetitious pattern again. The snake, in

and of itself, possesses this cyclicity.

"The power of life causes the snake to shed its sk in, just as the moon

sheds its shadow. The serpent sheds its sk in to be born again, as the

moon its shadow to be born again. They are equivalent symbols.

Sometimes the serpent is represented as a a circle eating its own tail.

That's an image of life. Life sheds one generation after another, to be born

again. There is something tremendously terrifying about life when you look

at it that way. And so the serpent carries in itself the sense of both the

fascination and the terror of life. Furthermore, the serpent represents the

primary function of life, mainly eating. Life consists in eating other

creatures. You don't think about that very much when you make a nice-

look ing meal. But when what you're doing is eating something that was very

recently alive... The serpent is a travelling alimentary canal, that's about all

it is. And it gives you that primary sense of shock, of life at its most primal

quality. There is no arguing with that animal at all. Life lives by k illing and

eating itself, casting off death and being reborn, like the moon. This is one

of the mysteries that these symbolic, paradoxical forms try to represent."

Joseph Campbell

In the Abrahamic religions, the serpent's role in the myth of the Fall is well-

known, but perhaps mythologically misunderstood. A fall from grace is a fall

from perfection into imperfection, from the heaven realm into the life realm.

"Life, by definition, implies death. To be alive is to be imperfect, to be on an

evolving path toward death." (Leeming, 1990). This myth belongs to the book of

Genesis -- the book of creation. The serpent's role is in fact critical to the

creation of life.

"The idea in the biblical tradition of the Fall is that nature as we know it is

corrupt, sex in itself is corrupt, and the female as the epitome of sex is a

corrupter. Why was this knowledge of good and evil forbidden to Adam and

Eve? Without that knowledge, we’d all be a bunch of babies still in Eden,

without any participation in life. Woman brings life into the world. Eve is the

mother of this temporal world. Formerly you had a dreamtime paradise there

in the Garden of Eden – no time, no birth, no death – no life. The serpent,

who dies and is resurrected, shedding its sk in and renewing its life, is the

lord of the central tree, where time and eternity come together. He is the

primary god, actually, in the Garden of Eden. Yahweh, the one who walks

there in the cool of the evening, is just a visitor. The Garden is the

serpent’s place. It is an old, old story. We have Sumerian seals from as

early as 3500 B.C. showing the serpent and the tree and the goddess, with

the goddess giving the fruit of life to a visiting male." Joseph Campbell

Western Dragon.

Sometimes the ouroboros appears alternately as a dragon.

"Whenever there is a strong lock used, there is something extremely

precious hidden. The thicker the veil, the more valuable the jewel. A hoard

of treasure is guarded by a large snake; do not dwell on the hideousness of

the snake, contemplate the dazzling and the priceless things you'll discover

in the treasure." Rumi

In occidental mythology, a dragon steals and conceals something valuable. It

captures gold or a maiden, hides it in a cave, and sits at the cavern's mouth to

guard it. Ironically, it has no use for these valuables -- so it is sometimes seen

as a symbol of greed. In the West, it is a symbol of evil. Indeed, the devil is

sometimes depicted as a snake. And so the good knight journeys to slay the

dragon to unlock the hidden forces.

Freeing the maiden is also an act of romantic love. A new mythology began

with the troubadours who popularized this concept of courtly love --

superseding the tradition of arranged marriage. Love transitions from a social,

communal function to an erotic experience -- the intimacy of a person-to-

person affair. Sometimes the ouroboros is depicted as two snakes eating each

other. This is a symbol of the union of the pair of opposites.

Page 30: Home - Quora

26/10/2013 Home - Quora

www.quora.com 30/39

The yin-yang symbol is similar. In love, dualities break down. And yet a self-

begetting theme arises again -- the sexual act gives rise to the miraculous

birth of a new generation.

Eastern Dragon.

In contrast to the European dragon, the Chinese dragon is benevolent. It is a

swamp-dwelling dragon. Like the snake, it is a chthonic, subterranean symbol.

As such, it is often associated with the unconscious -- with more primitive

aspects of man. But it represents the vitality of nature, from which man must

not divorce himself. In the East, dragons are often guardians of the sacred.

They stand in pairs at the gate of Buddhist temples to ward off evil spirits.

Actually, gargoyles on churches are similar. Dragons are thought to possess

great power, strength, and wisdom. Dragon dances at annual Chinese New

Year celebrations are believed to bring good luck.

Medicine/Healing and Poison/Death.

In some myths, destruction of the dragon is followed by the hero tasting the

dragon's blood which brings powers of invincibility. This is similar to the

immortality or "life lives on life" motifs. When Siegfried tastes the blood of the

dragon, he is allowed to understand the language of the forest bird. Thus, its

blood has magical properties. The Rod of Asclepius -- the serpent-entwined

staff -- is still used as a symbol of medicine today.

In other myths, the effects of the dragon's blood (or the snake's venom) are just

the opposite: it is poisonous, and the hero murders the beast only to be killed

by a drop of its blood. And yet the princess is still released. We see again the

duality of symbols. In the ouroboros, the snake is constantly recreating itself

and yet constantly consuming/ destroying itself.

How many ways can you give 8 apples to 4 people? Not everyone has to

receive the same number of apples, and someone could even receive no

apples.

Sounds pretty simple... there couldn't be that many different ways, right? Let's

give the people names: Alice, Bob, Carol, and Dave. So you could give Alice 8

apples, or you could give her 7 apples and give someone else 1 apple, or you

could give Alice 6 apple and then... OK, maybe this is more complicated than

we thought.

Let's just start listing examples at random and see if we can find a pattern.

Apples given to (Alice, Bob, Carol, Dave):

(8, 0, 0, 0)

(7, 1, 0, 0)

(7, 0, 1, 0)

(6, 2, 0, 0)

(2, 2, 2, 2)

(5, 1, 0, 2)

So what's going on? We really just need to pick four whole numbers that add

up to 8. But how many ways can we do that?

Hmm, let's try representing the apples with stars instead. Same examples as

before:

1

2

3

4

5

6

7

Alice | Bob | Carol | Dave

******** | | |

******* | * | |

******* | | * |

****** | ** | |

** | ** | ** | **

***** | * | | **

But wait. What if we squished down each of the rows? It just becomes a

sequence of stars and dividers:

1

2

3

4

5

6

7

Alice|Bob|Carol|Dave

********|||

*******|*||

*******||*|

******|**||

**|**|**|**

*****|*||**

So now these are sequences of 11 symbols that always contain 8 *'s and 3 |'s.

But can we get any sequence like this? ... Yes, any sequence with 8 *'s and 3

|'s can be turned uniquely into a way to divide up the apples. Just count the

number of stars between dividers.

What about the other way around? Does every way to divide the apples give a

different sequence? Yes, that's true too. So we have a 1-to-1 correspondence,

also called a bijection. That means the number of ways to divide up the apples

is the exact same as the number of 11-symbol sequences that have 8 *'s and

3 |'s.

But that number is simple. It's exactly 11 choose 3, or the number of ways to

get from the top of Pascal's triangle to row 11, entry 3. So we know the

answer is

When math is no longer just a homework assignment telling you exactly what

formula to use, it becomes a puzzle, an exploration.

Sometimes seemingly unrelated concepts can link together. Sometimes we

can put together things that we know in order to solve a problem that looks like

something we could never know. And sometimes we can learn something new

along the way. That's what math has taught me.

Einstein as a teenager understood aether has mass.

Albert Einstein's 'First Paper'; a letter to his Uncle by Mike Cavedon on Posts

"The velocity of a wave is proportional to the square root of the elastic forces

which cause [its] propagation, and inversely proportional to the mass of the

aether moved by these forces."

Einstein is referring to the state of displacement of the aether.

The velocity of a wave is proportional to the square root of the elastic forces

which cause its propagation, and inversely proportional to the mass of the

aether displaced by these forces.

Einstein would later describe the state of the aether as determined by its

connections with the matter and the state of the aether in neighboring places.

Einstein: Ether and Relativity

"the state of the [ether] is at every place determined by connections with the

matter and the state of the ether in neighbouring places"

The physical state of the aether at every place determined by its physical

connections with the matter and the physical state of the aether in neighboring

places is the state of displacement of the aether.

Physics: Can the whole theory of relativity (both of them) besummarized in laymen terms that everything is changing itsshape and time rate as a function of relative change in energydensity (all forms of energy combined) and that the gradient ofthis change is manifested as an inertial force or gravity?

Aether has mass, physically occupies three dimensional space and is

physically displaced by particles of matter.

There is no such thing as non-baryonic dark matter anchored to matter.

Matter moves through and displaces the aether.

"The word 'ether' has extremely negative connotations in theoretical physics

because of its past association with opposition to relativity. This is unfortunate

because, stripped of these connotations, it rather nicely captures the way

most physicists actually think about the vacuum. . . . Relativity actually says

nothing about the existence or nonexistence of matter pervading the universe,

only that any such matter must have relativistic symmetry. [..] It turns out that

such matter exists. About the time relativity was becoming accepted, studies

of radioactivity began showing that the empty vacuum of space had

spectroscopic structure similar to that of ordinary quantum solids and fluids.

Subsequent studies with large particle accelerators have now led us to

understand that space is more like a piece of window glass than ideal

Newtonian emptiness. It is filled with 'stuff' that is normally transparent but can

be made visible by hitting it sufficiently hard to knock out a part. The modern

concept of the vacuum of space, confirmed every day by experiment, is a

relativistic ether. But we do not call it this because it is taboo." - Robert B.

Laughlin, Nobel Laureate in Physics, endowed chair in physics, Stanford

University

The following image supposedly represents non-baryonic dark matter anchored

to matter. Think of the following image as being a piece of window glass where

the space surrounding the galaxies represents the state of displacement of the

aether. What exists in the space surrounding the galaxies does not travel with

the galaxies. The galaxies are moving through and displacing the aether. An

analogy which might help is to think of a bunch of submarines moving through

the ocean. The submarines displace the water as they move through the

ocean. In the image below the galaxies are moving through and displacing the

aether.

The aether is, or behaves similar to, a supersolid, which is described in the

following article as the 'fluidic' nature of space itself. The article describes a

'back reaction' associated with the 'fluidic' nature of space itself. This is the

displaced aether 'displacing back'.

[1208.3458] An Extended Dynamical Equation of Motion, Phase Dependency

and Inertial Backreaction

"We hypothesize that space itself resists such surges according to a kind of

induction law (related to inertia); additionally, we provide further evidence of the

“fluidic” nature of space itself. This "back-reaction" is quantified by the

tendency of angular momentum flux threading across a surface."

The following article describes the aether as that which produces resistance to

acceleration and is responsible for the increase in mass of an object with

velocity and describes the "space-time ideal fluid approach from general

relativity."

On parallels between electromagnetic and fluidic inertia

"It is shown that the force exerted on a particle by an ideal fluid produces two

effects: i) resistance to acceleration and, ii) an increase of mass with velocity.

... The interaction between the particle and the entrained space flow gives rise

to the observed properties of inertia and the relativistic increase of mass. ...

Accordingly, in this framework the non resistance of a particle in uniform

motion through an ideal fluid (D’Alembert’s paradox) corresponds to Newton’s

first law. The law of inertia suggests that the physical vacuum can be modeled

as an ideal fluid, agreeing with the space-time ideal fluid approach from general

relativity."

The relativistic mass of an object is the mass of the object and the mass of the

aether connected to and neighboring the object which is displaced by the

object. The faster an object moves with respect to the state of the aether in

which it exists the greater the displacement of the aether by the object the

greater the relativistic mass of the object.

The relativistic mass of the Milky Way is the mass of the Milky Way and the

mass of the aether connected to and neighboring the Milky Way which is

displaced by the matter the Milky Way consists of.

The relativistic mass of the Milky Way accounts for the speed at which the

matter in the Milky Way moves.

[1305.5759] Comment on higher derivative Lagrangians in relativistic theory

"The relativistic theory of an Aether was discussed several time, see for e.g.

[8], [9]. In this paper, our hypothesis is different and gives a relativistic theory

of the deformation of continuous media (for which the geometry is described by

the metric field)."

The Milky Way's halo is the deformation of continuous media.

The Milky Way's halo is curved spacetime.

The Milky Way's halo is the state of displacement of the aether.

What is referred to as the curvature of spacetime is the state of displacement

of the aether.

The pseudo-force of curved spacetime physically exists in nature as the force

of the displaced aether.

Einstein: Ether and Relativity

"Think of waves on the surface of water. Here we can describe two entirely

different things. Either we may observe how the undulatory surface forming the

boundary between water and air alters in the course of time; or else-with the

help of small floats, for instance - we can observe how the position of the

separate particles of water alters in the course of time. If the existence of such

floats for tracking the motion of the particles of a fluid were a fundamental

impossibility in physics - if, in fact nothing else whatever were observable than

the shape of the space occupied by the water as it varies in time, we should

have no ground for the assumption that water consists of movable particles.

But all the same we could characterise it as a medium."

if, in fact nothing else whatever were observable than the shape of the space

occupied by the aether as it varies in time, we should have no ground for the

assumption that aether consists of movable particles. But all the same we

could characterise it as a medium having mass which is displaced by the

particles of matter which exist in it and move through it.

Displaced aether pushing back and exerting inward pressure toward matter is

gravity.

Everything is with respect to the state of the aether in which it exists, including

the rate at which an atomic clock ticks. The state of which as determined by

its connections with the matter and the state of the aether in neighboring

places is the state of displacement of the aether. This is why the speed of light

is always determined to be 'c'.

The faster an atomic clock moves with respect to the state of the aether in

which it exists the greater the displacement of the aether by the clock the

greater the pressure exerted toward and throughout the atomic clock by the

displaced aether the slower the clock ticks.

In the Hafele–Keating experiment the plane flying Eastward is flying into a

'head wind'', causing the clock to tick slower. The plane flying Westward is

flying with the state of displacement of the aether, allowing the clock to tick

faster.

Watch the following video starting at 0:45 to see a visual representation of the

state of the aether. What is referred to as a twist in spacetime is the state of

displacement of the aether.

The rate at which an atomic clock ticks is a physical process determined by

the physical state of the aether in which it exists. If you take an atomic clock

to the top of a mountain it ticks faster due to the change in the state of the

aether.
