Gain graphs and motions

In the extended abstracthttp://fwcg14.cse.uconn.edu/program/wp-content/uploads/sites/863/2014/10/fwcg2014 submission 12.pdfwe propose to use gain graphs geometrically. Given a periodicframework with an infinitesimal motion, we want to show thatwe can ”shrink” the gains so that the infinitesimal motion ispreserved. It may happen, that shortening one gain forces someother gain to increase in order to preserve a motion.

Gain graphs and motions

The more important question is: Which infinitesimal motionsof the gain graph lift to infinitesimal motions of the periodicframework.

Unit distance realizations of combi-natorial zeolites

Assume you have n fixed points in the plane contained in theinterior of a disc of radius 1. It is trivial to construct a 2n-gonwith unit distance edge lengths such that every other point onthe 2n-gon is one of the given fixed points and all new points arewithin the given disc. This pinned 2n-gon is a pinned isostaticframework and we consider the 2n-gon as a body-pin graph.Vertices correspond to rigid bodies, which we want to be tri-angles and edges correspond to pins. Releasing a pin lets thetwo released triangles move in a circle about the fixed pointsand we clearly can insert a new equilateral triangle. The freenose of this new triangle describes a coupler curve which isquite complicated and has one or two components dependingon the distance between the fixed points. We want to show thatrepeating this process of releasing pins and inserting trianglesthat the coupler curves do not get small in the sense that theyshould contain two points unit distance apart, and that all thesecoupler curves intersect.
