The County Library Service and the Heritage Office of Roscommon County Council are proud supporters of the work of the County Roscommon Folklore & Oral History Network since 2006 when the Network was established. This project affords Roscommon County Council an opportunity to work in co-operation with interested people to support our heritage and culture, and enhance the quality of life of people in the county, by providing this fantastic resource for future generations to enjoy.
Over the past ten years a unique collection of stories about life in Roscommon has been collected from all corners of the county. Every year, during National Heritage Week, new additions to the collection have been added. The collection has grown and developed over the years, with the addition of video footage, kindly donated by Seán Browne, from his archive. The lives and stories recounted in the collection provide a great insight into times gone by and how people lived their lives and went about their business over the past 100 years.
In this centenary year, we have highlighted interviews in the collection which have particular interest in terms of their insight into the period 1916-1926 as viewed through the eyes of those interviewed.
Eugene Cummins, Chief Executive, Roscommon County Council

The County Roscommon Folklore and Oral History collection is the first major collection of folklore and oral history to encompass the whole county since the Schools Folklore Collection which was carried out in the years 1937/8. The schools collection of folklore is available in the County Library and on www.duchas.ie.
James “Jim” Delaney, who lived in Kiltoom, spent more than 30 years gathering tales of the life, lore and traditions of the people throughout Roscommon but the concentration of his work was in the south of the county. His work is now housed at the National Folklore Collection in University College Dublin (UCD). Dr Bairbre Ní Fhloinn, lecturer in Irish Foklore in UCD has pointed out that “His work was of particular importance because he documented the richness of tradition in the midlands, that great storehouse that very often goes completely unrecognised.”
Dr. Douglas Hyde was a significant collector of folklore in Co. Roscommon and many of his collections were published in both Irish and English.
Likewise, Sir William Wilde collected folk tales and superstitions from his boyhood spent in Roscommon. They were published as Irish popular superstitions.

Introduction to County Roscommon Folklore & Oral History Network
County Roscommon Folklore and Oral History Network is a group of interested individuals who came together to take part in a Folklore & Oral History training project which was being run by the Heritage Office of Roscommon County Council back in 2005. The training project, under the direction of Anne Ridge, covered all aspects of recording folklore and oral history. Initially older people, in particular, were recorded so that their knowledge would not be lost. The recordings were then transferred to CD and transcribed. The interviewees and their families were given a CD of the recording and their consent was obtained before thematerial was given to the County Library.
All interviews are carried out in accordance with best practice guidelines. Every year, since 2006, we have added new recordings to our collection and we are proud to celebrate over ten years of collecting Folklore and Oral History in the county. All interviewers and interviewees give their time freely and with great enthusiasm. Roscommon County Council works in partnership with us in terms of administrative support, transcription and presenting our collection to the public through the County Library Service, as an action of the County Roscommon Heritage Plan. We hope you enjoy the collection.

Who we are and what we do...
County Roscommon Folklore and Oral History Network are volunteers who interview and record people with interesting stories to tell about their life. Their stories shed light on times gone past - ways of working, travelling, socialising, communicating, learning, playing, praying, cooking, farming and much more.
These stories may be familiar to many of us of now, but we must remember in a few short years these stories will be a revelation to future generations who have grown up with electricity, cars, mobile phone, wi-fi and social media. Can they possibly imagine life as it was lived in the county over the past 100 years or so? This collection has much to teach future generations.
County Roscommon Folklore and Oral History Network simply identifies people who they feel have an interesting story to tell. The interviewer is introduced to the person if they do not know them. If people agree to being interviewed they visit them in their homes and have a chat with them. This chat or ‘interview’ is recorded and put on to CD. The CD is left back with the interviewee for them to listen to and see that they are happy with their interview. If they want anything edited out of the interview, this can be done for them. When they are happy with the interview, and oral consent is given, it is added to the collection. At that stage it is sent for transcription. The transcription is checked and corrections made if necessary. Once the recording and transcription are in order, the interview can be uploaded to the collection. The collection is available, free, to the public via the County Library Service, during library opening hours.

To access the collection, just ask for it at any library in the county. Library staff will get you set up at a computer and show you how to access the collection. It is simple so don’t worry. Make yourself comfortable, put the headphones on and listen to the recordings and watch the videos to your heart’s content!
Aim of this booklet
This booklet aims to spread the word about our collection. Who has been recorded? Where are they from? Who recorded them and when was the recording made? What do the interviewees talk about? What might I hear that I didn’t hear before?
This booklet captures the collection as it stands in 2016. We hope it will continue to grow and expand.
As part of the 1916:2016 Roscommon Centenary Programme, interviews which shed light on life in the period 1916-1926 have been highlighted.

The County Roscommon Folklore and Oral History Collection would be nowhere without the kind co-operation of the interviewees who welcomed the interviewers into their homes and who chatted to them and shared their stories with great generosity, sincere thanks to you all and to your families. We remember those in our collection who have since passed away ‘Ar dheis Dé go raibh a n-anam’.
Thanks to all the members of the County Roscommon Folklore and Oral History Network who put countless hours of their time and effort researching, interview-ing, transcribing and of course sharing a few yarns of their own!
Thanks to Anne Ridge, who got the ball rolling with her expert training back in 2005/2006. Anne has kept a close eye on the network ever since and has always helped, advised and given generously of her time and expertise.
Thanks to Roscommon County Council Library staff and Heritage Officer for their support, time and assistance with this project over the years.
