By John FitzpatrickHCS Board President

My name is John Fitzpatrick and I am running for the school board. I have been a member of the Board for the past fifteen years. I have previously been vice president for five years, and for the last six years I have been president. I have helped guide the school through the financial dif-ficulties of the mid 90’s and three build-ing projects. As Board President I have been interested in the big picture, not the day-to-day operations of the school. That is what the role of a board member should be.

With the projects we were able to add new science and home and careers labs, the middle school wing, recondition both gyms, re-grade the athletic fields, new band and music rooms ,and various im-provements to the plant. We were also able to bring our school to the top in the area with technology. I have also been involved with three superintendent searches. That is one of the most important functions of a board member.

I am a firm believer in small schools. They provide more opportunities for stu-dents to participate in athletics, musicals, plays, bands etc. Basically anybody who wants to participate can do so. Extracur-ricular activities are what provide students with some of the skills necessary to thrive in their careers. We are able to produce a well- balanced marketable graduate.

I have had two of my children graduate and they are continuing their education. My last child is a junior. The experience my children have had at Hinsdale Central School was good. My interests are and will be in maintaining a quality education for our students. That would include hiring good staff and supporting them, also keep-ing current with new technology. I feel we are still a strong district and I want to keep it that way.

Please remember to vote on May 19. I would appreciate your support and also believe support in our budget is what will help keep Hinsdale Central School District here for years to come.

This page contains answers to common questions of students and parents.

1.Does my child have homework each night? 2.What should I do if my child does not bring these things home? 3.How is our class spelling list created? 4.What happens if my child does not bring the book report in on time? 5.How will parents be kept uptodate on their child's progress?

Does my child have homework each night?

Yes! Please see the Homework Policy section of this web page for more details concerning your child's nightly assignments.

What should I do if my child does not bring these things home?

First, ask your child why they have not brought these things home. Try to help your child develop a plan so that they can be more responsible for these assignments. You can also notify me by leaving a message on my voice mail (X125), sending me an e-mail, or sending a note in with your child. I will discuss it with your child, and develop a plan, and make sure they take the assignments home. If this doesn't work we can arrange to have spelling lists etc. sent home with an older sibling. This is my least favorite solution since it removes personal responsibility from your child but, if necessary, we will build from this point.

How is our spelling list created? Our class spelling list is a mixture of words that we will be reading in ourreading text book, our social studies, science, and math curriculum, monthly word and holidays, and proper nouns. Your child will be reading and writing these words everyday, which makes them more meaningful than just a set of simple words joined by a common spelling pattern. Our class lists provide us with a rich, ongoing learning experience of several spelling patterns, both simple and complex.

How will parents be kept up to date on their child's progress? There are several ways in which you will be kept informed of your child's progress and performance. First, tests will be sent home at the end of each month in a brown monthly envelope. After you have read the enclosed material please sign the front of the envelope next to the appropriate month and return the empty envelope as soon as possible. If you have any questions concerning these tests please call me at 557-2227 ext. 125 to set up a conference so we may address your concerns in more depth.Secondly, TIPS reports are completed and sent home after the first 5 weeks of a marking period. These will outline the areas in which your child is having difficulty and suggestions to help correct the problem. Also, teachers will be meeting individually with each parent on our

Fitzpatrick seeks re-election to HCS Board of Education

Budget Vote& Board ElectionMay 19thNoon - 8 p.m.

Responsible school budget holds the fiscal line

By John Fitzpatrick, Board of Education PresidentOn Tuesday, May 19, you will have the opportunity to vote for the 2009-2010

budget. You will be voting on the budget, bus purchase, and the establishment of a Capital Reserve for Busses. I encourage you to vote on all three propositions. The continued support of the budget every year helps guarantee the existence of the Hinsdale Central School District.

The budget this year has a 3.7% increase in expenditures. These increases are due to higher cost in health insurance, retirement benefits, energy, con-tractual expenses, operational, and normal inflation-ary increases. This budget is a very conservative one put together by the hard work of Business Administrator, Jennifer Jaquith, and Superintendent Judi McCarthy.

The 3.7% increase in expenditures will have a 0% increase in the Tax Levy. This is because there was no reduction of state aid due to federal stimulus money for education. Also included in the revenue side is the use of excess money from last year’s budget applied to this year’s budget.

In addition, you will be voting on a bus purchase. We purchase a bus every year; that keeps the fleet current and safe. By doing this, we are able to maintain a level debt service.

Finally is the establishment of a Capital Reserve fund for busses. State aid sup-plies 70% of the revenue for the district. If there is a future decrease in aid, we would have to use these funds for potential transportation needs. The state allows us to create these reserves for excess funds which may be needed in future years, especially those of economic uncertainty.

Our goals in budgeting include the ability to keep our district on firm financial ground through the wise use of resources, maintain our effort to provide our children the education to thrive, and keep HCS a vital part of the Hinsdale community.

Our Budget Hearing will be held on May 12 at 7 p.m. in the upper gymnasium.

School Lunch Charge Policy begins May 11

An update from the 1st and 2nd grade LIFE Grant after school program! We have been busy little butterflies. To celebrate the return of the spring season, we read Hopper Hunts for Spring. The children created a “Think Spring” list and attached it to a beautiful butterfly craft.

The following week, the children went on a homophone hunt! We read a book called Dear Deer, which was all about ho-mophones. Then they had to find eggs hidden around the room. Inside each egg was a homophone pair that they had to use in a sentence. It was an “egg-cellent” event!

Beginning May 11, 2009, Hinsdale Central School will be implementing a school lunch charge policy. The Board of Education reviewed the policy during their March and April 2009 meetings. New York State Child Nutrition, a division of the State Education Department, requires districts to implement a policy with charge limits if we allow charges.

Child Nutrition Program/Charging Meals

The Hinsdale Central School District believes no child should go hungry dur-ing the school day, and recognizes that students may forget to bring a lunch or money to school. In order to promote responsible behavior and minimize the financial impact on the school lunch program, the board will allow students to “charge” meals and pay back at a later date according to the terms of this policy.

Although not required by law, because of the District’s participation in the Child Nutrition Program, the Board of Education approves the establishment of a system to allow a student to charge a meal. All stu-

dents Kindergarten through twelfth grade will be allowed to charge a maximum of five meals. Students will not be allowed to charge ala carte items.

After three charges have occurred, with no note or phone call from the parent/guardian, the cafeteria will send letters no-tifying parents of our intent to serve their student(s) a sandwich and milk, which constitutes a complete lunch. After the fifth charge and no repayment, the student will be served a sandwich and milk until the charges are repaid. If outstanding lunch charges exist, the student will not be allowed to purchase ala carte items. Weekly letters will be mailed or sent home for students who have outstanding account balances.

Positive/Negative BalancesAll balances, both positive and nega-

tive, remaining at the end of a school year will be carried into the next school year.

Prepayment of MealsHinsdale Central School encourages

parents/guardians to deposit funds into their students account so that funds are

readily available to purchase meals and ala carte items. Payment can be made by cash, check or money order. This elimi-nates the need for parents/guardians to send money with their student each day. It also helps increase the efficiency of the serving line so students have more time to eat their meals.

Participation in the Free/Reduced Meal Program

If you think you may eligible, please contact the school for an application. If you were not eligible at the beginning of the school year and your financial situation has changed, you can file another applica-tion at any time during the school year.

The free/reduced meal application process is completely confidential. Appli-cations are received in the district office, and all students use ID cards to purchase their meals. No one is able to identify if a student is free, reduced or paid when the students go through the lunch line.

If you have any question regarding this policy, please contact Jennifer Jaquith at (716) 557-2227 extension 190.

March 27th was an evening filled with fun. For a second year students arrived at 8 p.m. with a gym set up for volleyball, ping pong, badminton, and basketball. If sports weren’t to their liking the upper gym had seven TVs with video games that were projected onto the gym walls and game tables were set up in the lobby. At 11:15 p.m., all 94 participants boarded a bus headed for Byllye Lanes in PA where students enjoyed two hours of bowling with friends. Arriving back at school the students were still full of energy and participated in competitions of relay races, shoe finding, eating contests, and hula hooping. Some students opted out to watch the feature movie on the big screen. At sun up awards were given out to those

Dear Parents and Athletes:

School physicals will be given next month to all students wishing to play a sport in the 2009-2010 school year. Sports offered at Hinsdale Central School include: Fall - Football, Volleyball, Colorguard; Winter - Basketball, Bowling, Colorguard, Swimming - shared with Allegany; Spring - Baseball, Softball, Golf and Colorguard.

Please read through the medical qualification procedure for any student considering playing a school sport next year. Feel free to contact Mrs. Caskey at ext. 405 with any questions or concerns. The procedure is as follows:

* In late April 2009 students will be given a Health History form in their homerooms. * This needs to be completed and signed by a parent and returned to the nurse as

soon as possible.* All students wishing to play a sport must fill out and return one of these sheets. If

your student will be getting a physical with their own physician they can pick up a form for that at the nurse’s office.

* In May students will have the opportunity to get a free physical from our school physician. These physicals are good for one year, making the athlete eligible to play all seasons next school year.

It is highly recommended that any student even considering playing a sport next year get a physical. Students who do not receive a physical at this time will be responsible to obtain one from their own physician. Please remember school physicals are free of charge.

Thank you for your cooperation,

Mark Crino, Athletic DirectorValerie Caskey, School Nurse

Did you know riding the school bus is the safest way to travel? It’s true. It takes a team effort to make this happen, starting with parents and students, along with the bus driver and the bus mechanic, teachers, administration, superintendent and finally the Board of Education.

Safety starts with parents providing there child with the appropriate outdoor clothing for the weather while they wait for the bus. Parents can also talk to their youngster about proper behavior while riding the school bus. Bus rules include

observing similar conduct as in the class-room: no profanity, do not eat or drink on the bus, keep the bus clean, cooperate with the driver, stay in your seat, and keep your hands in the window.

If parents take the time to talk with their child about bus safety, it adds to the transportation team’s effort to make school buses the safest form of transportation in the world.

Have a safe ride on the big yellow bus. If you have questions or concerns, please call Mr. Ballard at 557-8739.
