Introduction Overview Presentation rules Main subject areas

The IEC Multilingual Dictionary is based on the International Electrotechnical Vocabulary (IEV) developed under the responsibility of IEC technical committee 1: Terminology, in co-operation with the other IEC technical committees. The aim of the IEV is to provide precise, brief and correct definitions of internationally accepted concepts in the field of electrotechnology, electronics and telecommunications, and to name the terms by which these defined concepts shall be shown. The current IEV has been developed over a period of 32 years. During this time the layout and typography rules varied to a certain extent. This is reflected in the Dictionary, as each part is displayed in the original source format including scanned images. The first edition of the Dictionary was published in 1983. Since the third edition in 1999, the Dictionary has been issued exclusively in an electronic format on a CD-ROM. This sixth edition of the Dictionary includes all the concepts covered within the IEV as of December 2004 and contains approximately 19 400 terminological entities. Quick information is available through electronic search facilities.

Consolidated indexes

Use the consolidated index in English, French, German and Spanish to search across the entire Dictionary. Some 23 000 index terms and related concept entry numbers are listed in each of the four language versions. Clicking on a given number will take you directly to the corresponding concept in the main part of the Dictionary. Parts

The core of the Dictionary is made up of 74 parts, or main subject areas, which are divided into sections. Explore each part by clicking on the appropriate bookmark on the left panel. Every section displays a set of concepts organized in a systematic order and complying with presentation rules. Each concept is identified by a unique entry number (e.g. 151-13-77) and includes terms, synonyms, abbreviations, letter symbols, definitions and equivalencies in various languages, as presented in the original source material. Definitions are given in English (en) and French (fr). Some are also available in Russian (ru) and Spanish (es). Equivalent terms are given in a set of additional languages, wherever available: Arabic (ar), Chinese (cn), German (de), Spanish (es), Italian (it), Japanese (ja), Dutch (ne), Polish (pl), Portuguese (pt), Russian (ru) and Swedish (sv). Part indexes

Each of the 13 languages of the Dictionary has a separate index section, which is further divided into parts. Explore the part indexes to identify a set of related terms in a given language and a given subject area.

Entry number

The entry number is composed of three elements, separated by hyphens: – Part number (3 digits), – Section number (2 digits), – Concept number (2-3 digits).

Introduction Overview Presentation rules Main subject areas Example: 151-13-77

Preferred term and synonyms

The preferred term is the term that heads a terminological entry; it may be followed by synonyms. It is printed in boldface type. There may be parts of a term that may be omitted, either in the field under consideration or in an appropriate context. Such parts of a term are printed in boldface type and placed in parentheses.

Example: (electromagnetic) emission

When no adequate term exists in a given language for a defined concept, this is shown by means of five dots: « ..... » in place of the term. The synonyms are printed on separate lines under the preferred term: they are also printed in boldface, except for deprecated or obsolete synonyms, which are printed in lightface type, and followed by the attribute « (deprecated) » or « (obsolete) ».

Attributes

Each term (or synonym) may comprise one or several words, and may be followed by optional attributes, corresponding to specific features of the term, placed immediately after the term, in the following order:

Attribute: Example: specific use of the term transmission line (in electric power systems) occurrence number conductance (1) national variant ampacity (US) grammatical indication dielectric, noun

AC, qualifier dielectric, adjective automate, verb

abbreviations EMC (abbreviation) deprecated or obsolete synonyms voltage (deprecated)

Letter symbol(s) for quantities and units

They are given on a separate line following that of the reference number, preceded by the prefix « symb. : ».

Example: 393-11-16 symb. : K kaon, m méson K, m méson dont la masse au repos est approximativement 978 fois la masse au repos de l’électron kaon K meson meson with rest mass approximately 978 times the rest mass of the electron

Source

In some cases, it has been necessary to include in a part a concept taken from another part, or from another authoritative terminology document (VIM, ISO/IEC 2382 etc.), in both cases with or without modification to the definition (and possibly to the term). This is indicated by the mention of this source, printed in lightface, and placed between square brackets at the end of the definition.

Examples: [702-08-04] [CISPR 22] [881-12-35 MOD]

(MOD indicates that the definition has been modified).

Terms in additional languages

These terms are placed at the end of the entry, on separate lines (one single line for each language), preceded by the alpha-2 code for the language defined in ISO 639, and in the alphabetic order of this code. The synonyms are separated by semicolons.

Introduction Description Règles de présentation Domaines principaux

Introduction Description Règles de présentation Domaines principaux Exemple: 151-13-77

Visitez notre site web: www.iec.ch Copyright © CEI 2005. Tous droits réservés.

Attributs

Exemple: 393-11-16 symb. : K kaon, m méson K, m méson dont la masse au repos est approximativement 978 fois la masse au repos de l’électron kaon K meson meson with rest mass approximately 978 times the rest mass of the electron

Source
