Community Bulletin Improving Moonee Ponds Creek between Boeing Reserve and Citylink at Ascot Vale Commencing in June 2016 Melbourne Water will undertake rehabilitation works to improve an 8km reach of Moonee Ponds Creek What do the works involve? The works comprise of weed control of species such as desert ash, willows, gleditsia, boxthorn and broom which are scattered throughout the project length. The main component of the project will be revegetation with suitable indigenous species. Why are these works necessary? Willow trees, desert ash, boxthorn, gleditsia and other species targeted in this project are considered environmental weeds in Victoria and there are strong environmental reasons for their removal. Willows in particular pose a serious threat to our waterways. Their characteristic dense canopy, invasive roots and heavy leaf fall can smother our creeks and lead to reduced habitat and food for fish, as well as poor water quality and flow. Replacing invasive non-indigenous vegetation with native plants will, in time, help to improve the environmental health of the area, foster biodiversity and create a better habitat for insects, birds and other wildlife. A more continuous corridor of vegetation along Moonee Ponds Creek will also improve the visual amenity of this area for the enjoyment of the local community. What do the works involve? The works comprise of weed control of species such as desert ash, willows, gleditsia, boxthorn and broom which are scattered throughout the project length. The main component of the project will be revegetation with suitable indigenous species.

Why are these works necessary?Willow trees, desert ash, boxthorn, gleditsia and other species targeted in this project are considered environmental weeds in Victoria and there are strong environmental reasons for their removal.

Local impact of the worksThere may be some minor noise increases as a result of the weed control works.Sections of the shared trail along Moonee Ponds Creek near Montague St and Nursery Corner may need to be temporarily detoured or have traffic management in place at times during weed removal works to ensure the safety of our work crews and the community. Path closures will be coordinated with other works being undertaken in the area. Signage will be used to indicate any traffic management.

Location of works

Timing of the worksThe works will begin in June, commencing with weed control, which is expected to take around two to three weeks (weather dependent) to complete. We will make every effort to minimise the impact of these essential works on the local community and the environment, and thank you for your patience.

Revegetation will take place after the works have been completed in two stages, with revegetation beds installed this winter and scattered trees and shrubs planted the length of the project in Autumn 2017. All revegetation will be maintained by Melbourne Water for two years.

How are these works funded? These works are funded by the Waterways and Drainage Charge collected through Melburnians’ water bills. We work to deliver waterway improvement projects efficiently and responsibly to maintain the drainage network.

For more information on these works please call 131 722 quoting Moonee Ponds Creek Revegetation Project. For information about other projects to enhance life and liveability please call 131 722 or visit melbournewater.com.au.
