Maths

The children started the year by working on place value. This was done in a practical /concrete way using apparatus (numicon ,dienes and place value counters) before moving onto pictorial methods and then finally abstract ways.. We then moved onto looking at coordinates,. Autumn term two saw us focussing on addition followed by subtraction. Please click on the following link for our school calculation policies on addition and subtraction.

http://www.malinbridgeprimary.co.uk/maths/

For place value see the Gareth Metcalfe links or see the no device required section.

For coordinates see the no device required section.

Here are some activities and games that the children could do at home:

Place Value

- Make you own place value counters, Thousands, Hundreds, Tens and ones, turn 6 over, what number have you got? 1122

Choose three or four number cards eg 2,7,4,9, Using all the cards make the smallest number that you can, make the largest number you can ? How many numbers can you make ?

-Draw a place value grid. Write a number in each column , what number have you got? How many tenths? How many tens ? etc. H T 0 .Tth H th

7 3 9 . 2 6

Coordinates -Draw a coordinates grid, on the grid label the X and Y axis. Now choose what you would like to draw on your grid. Draw them on the grid and also underneath. Get someone in your house to write the coordinate's for each thing. Mark their work. -We have done some brilliant pictures using coordinates.. Draw yourself a coordinates grid; create a shape or a picture and note down the coordinates of the corners. Then challenge someone in your house to recreate the picture just using the coordinates! (Make sure you make it tricky!)

Addition—Make some digit cards numbers 1—9. -Keep practising your addition skills, using the digits 1 to 9 (only use each number once) make two 3 digit numbers. Add them together using column addition. Challenge Using the 3 digits that are left and add them to the answer. - It the answer is 453, what 2 numbers could you add together to get 453? Try and think of as many different solutions as you can. Use different 2 , 3 and 4 digit numbers for the answers.

- Can you make up your own addition worded problem for your family to solve.

Subtraction

- Use some grains of rice. Take a handful, count them. Subtract a small amount. How many are left?

- Using digit cards 1 to 9 make a 3 digit number and then underneath make a 3 digit number. Subtract the second amount from the first amount column subtraction.

- Can you make up your own subtraction worded problem for your family to solve.

Below is the link to see the Gareth Metcalfe maths challenge videos. These are brilliant just make sure you do them in the right order because he gives the answers away for previous challenges in the videos.

In school, we do the daily 10 to practise multiplication tables. There are loads of levels of challenge for the daily 10 and the children will love showing you their skills.

https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/daily10

There are lots of free, extended challenges on following website that the children can work through. Some of them are really tough so make sure that you choose the appropriate level:

Of course one of the best resources that the children should definitely take advantage of is Maths Shed. The children love this and are brilliant at it too.

SUPPORTING RESOURCES

The children are familiar with using different sentence types in their writing. The sentence type examples on the following page will help remind the children of how different sentences are structured and help them to remember to include some of them in their writing.

The children know that they should periodically check their work when writing to minimise spelling errors, errors with punctuation, or to look for improvements. The checklists on the next page will help them structure their diary and help them to re-member what to include. They could then read Their diary extracts to someone else at home.

FINALLY…

Practise handwriting. The letter formation that we follow in school is attached for the children to use.

This is a link to another great website with games to play based on your favourite Disney films! Why not try the Mr Incredible workout or Simba’s Jungle Skills workout. They are all great and lots of them are games so you can challenge your parents to work out with you!

We get 1 hour outside of our homes or gardens every day. Don’t waste it! Instead of walking try running for a part of your walk or jumping or skipping! Whatever you fancy. Just make sure you are breathing more heavily by the end and you will be fitter in no time. One of my favourite games to play is to put on one of my favourite songs really loud and dance like no one is watching for the full song! Dance monkey is one of my favourites at the moment because Charlie in my class taught me the dance (it’s on Mr Lewis’s twitter if you’re interested!) This isn’t a half hearted shuffle from one leg to the other either. GO FOR IT! You will soon be out of breath and feeling happy!
