READING/WRITING FOCUS 7. Compare August feelings introducing himself to Ms

Petosa and Summer and their reactions. 8. What is the same and what is different? 9. Compare what happens just after August introduces

himself to Ms Petosa and Summer. Who is in control in each of the situations?

LESSON 2 – TUESDAY The best authors use a range of sentence types to make their writing interesting and engaging. This lesson is working on understanding sentence types and being able to use them. Think about: What is a simple sentence? What must a simple sentence have to make it a sentence? Can you think of an example? What is a compound sentence? What is a complex sentence? So, what are the differences between the three types of sentence? YOU WILL NEED the Wonderfully Varied Sentences sheet for all of the tasks today. What is expected is fully explained on the sheet, which is attached. TASK ONE Recap on the three chapters read yesterday. Pick out two things from each chapter that captured your attention. Explain to someone at home stood out for you and why. TASK TWO Punctuation and Grammar: Using the Wonderfully Varied Sentences sheet, convert simple sentence paragraphs to mixed simple, compound and complex paragraphs. THEN convert the complex paragraph to a mixed one, with speech. TASK THREE Focussing on the chapter Lunch, write an imagined conversation taking place on another table in the lunch room, include a range of sentence types, speech and action/description. LESSON 3 – WEDNESDAY Vocabulary Although people from America and England can understand each other because we speak the same language. Some of the vocabulary used in both countries is different and usual. We will be looking at vocabulary in particular today.

READING/WRITING FOCUS TASK ONE VOCABULARY MATCHING GAME – Part A Using the US Vocabulary worksheet, cut out all of the cards and match them with a definition. TASK TWO VOCABULARY PAIRS GAME – Part A Play this with someone else at home or at school (remember social distancing if in school – you can both have your own set of cards but count them out to make it fair). Shuffle the cards and share them out. The aim is to collect as many matching cards as you can: a word and a definition. Player with the most matching cards, wins. TASK THREE CREATE A FACT-FILE – Part B In the vocabulary list, Connecticut (a US state) and Star Wars (the film) are referred to. You have a choice of two tasks: 1. Find a list of 5 US states (choose the most interesting

ones). Research facts about each state. Then create a fact-file about each state. Use your own words and illustrate for effect.

2. Choose 5 Star Wars character (they can be the ones that lesser known characters if you wish). Research facts about each one. Then create your own fact-file about each character. Use your own words and draw pictures of your characters to make it more interesting.

TASK FOUR A GLOSSARY OF FOODS Think about a glossary and what its purpose is. A glossary is a list of words with definitions (explanations) as to what they are/mean. In the book, there are several US foods such as graham and saltline crackers, mentioned. Your task is to create a glossary of 5-10 US foods that we do not have in the UK. Again, you could draw a picture to accompany each. LESSON 4 – THURSDAY Characters can be very complex. Good writers write about characters with whom we can identify. We will be comparing two characters from the book today. TASK ONE Re-read the chapter Choose Kind, p45-48 Think about: 1. What is meant by the term

‘homeroom?’ 2. Why do other children tend to like Jack? 3. What is a precept and why would we use them?

MATHS DON’T FORGET……

PURPLEMASH there are a range of activities for you to have a go at. These are added to on a regular basis – we can also give you feedback if you submit them.

READING/WRITING FOCUS TASK ONE (continued….) Inference: a guess that you make or an opinion that you form based on the information that you have. Your task is to complete the Comparing Teachers, section A, where you have to complete the table about Mr Browne’s character, giving evidence from the text to support. TASK TWO Re-read p37-42, Locks and Around the Room. THEN compare Mr Browne and Mrs Petosa’s characters. COMPLETE the sheet Comparing Teachers, section B, making sure that you use evidence from the text to support your comparisons. TASK THREE Think about what you have read so far and the two characters that you have just compared. YOU are to CREATE two characters (teachers) who are different. THINK and make NOTES about their personalities: what do they look like; how do they behave; what are they like? Your task is to write two separate classroom scenes with the contrasting teachers that you have created. You must clearly show their character traits through their actions and what they do/say.

LESSON 5 – FRIDAY Comprehension What do you think of the book so far? Can you recap on the main points? What do you think might happen next in the story? Where would you like the story to go (what would you like to see happen)? TASK ONE Read p54-56, One to Ten. Explain to someone else what has happened in this chapter. Then answer the comprehension questions using the Comparing Mom, Dad and August worksheet where you are comparing August and his mum’s reactions to his first day at school. TASK TWO Read p57-60, Padawan. Using the worksheet: Comparing Mom, Dad and August, compare his mum and dad’s reactions.

READING/WRITING FOCUS TASK THREE Watch one of the Augie Doggie and Doggie Daddy episodes on the Internet. They explore how this cartoon and the characters are used by August and his Dad in their relationship. WHAT is it about? The story centres around the misadventures of a super dad trying to do his best to improve his somewhat undisciplined son's education, judging what would be best for him, even with some dislike at times of Bobi. The little puppy, who loves his father unconditionally, is very witty and motivated by a desire to fulfil his ambitions as well as make his father proud. WHERE can I watch the cartoon? You can access these via the internet but YouTube have many episodes. They are quite old though as they were filmed in 1959! An earlier version can be viewed: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kD3qacC0Tdg THEN compare the characters in the cartoon to August and his dad. ______________________________________________

PHYSICAL EDUCATION Sports Day CREATE YOUR OWN SPORTS DAY AT HOME!

EGG AND SPOON RACE

Another traditional favourite. Real eggs? Or something that won’t break? Either way, it would be fun.

THREE-LEGGED RACE

Pair up with someone in your house – think how you could safely tie your legs together. Where will you start from and where will you finish?

CUP BY CUP

You will need a bucket of water, a cup and an empty bucket. The challenge is to empty the bucket at the front by filling the cup and passing it to the person behind you. The last person in the row has to empty the remains of the

water into the empty bucket and then pass the empty cup back to the front. You start all over again. Will you end up with as much water as you started with? The winning group are the group who have the most water left!

BEAN BAG TOSS

Create your own home version. Can go up in numbers of 10, 20, 50 – who can throw the furthest? What will you reward points by? How could you score it?

OBSTACLE COURSE

Build you own obstacle course. Think about what you could use and have as part of it. Don’t forget that you could even do keepie-ups to start or push ups etc. Have fun!

SCIENCE

SPORTS

We know that looking after yourself is important and a healthy lifestyle is vital if you wish to be a successful

sportsperson. It isn’t just eating well and being good at sport, it is also a mind-set.

Looking at the quotes above, which are a series of quotes from the world of sport, about motivation, engagement,

fitness and determination, pick one and think about the personalities involved, asking yourself:

What motivates them to take part?

Why do you think that is?

What are the benefits of sport and exercise?

How do you think people choose what sport to do?

TASK ONE – TRY SOMETHING NEW

What sports do you participate in regularly?

Write each sport that you regularly participate in and how many times per

week that you do it for.

What sport in our class do you think has the most participants?

Why do you think that might be?

Which is your favourite sport and why?

What encouraged you to take up this sport?

Write about your favourite sport and why this is your favourite sport by

completing the Try Something New sheet attached.

TASK TWO – TRY SOMETHING NEW:

WRITING AN ADVERT

Create a poster advert for a new sport using the prompts on the attached sheet.

Looking at the prompt sheet attached, you are going to use this to help you to

create a persuasive poster to encourage Year 6 classmates to participate in a new

sport. Select a sport or exercise that you may know a little about although not

necessarily have tried yourself.

What does the sport involve?

Why would it be a good sport to take up?

REMEMBER to refer to all the prompts when writing your advert. REFER to

secondary sources carefully to ensure that you use facts to give reasons for

taking part and opinions that persuade and encourage motivation.

ART & DESIGN After watching the PowerPoint of the Hero Twins (history section), you will now be familiar with this type of ball game that was an important part of Mayan culture. This knowledge will help you to produce some artwork that can go with your history task.

TASK TO draw a picture/scene to illustrate how to play this ancient ball game of pok-ta-pok and to accompany your instructions.

Don’t forget you can share your artwork by uploading to the school’s Facebook page. Have fun. SOURCES: - https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/ zq6svcw/articles/zbqyy4j The Hero Twins (Twinkl) - uploaded on our website.

HISTORY PURPLE MASH Have a look at these activities that have been put onto Purple Mash for you.

_______________________________________________

MAYA CIVILISATION – THE HERO TWINS One of the many things the ancient Mayas are remembered for is their ball game, which they called pitz or pok-ta-pok.

The game was played on an "I" shaped ball court with hoops on either side. a small rubber ball, which usually weighed about 6 pounds, was to be bounced through the small hoops. Ancient Mayas took this game to a whole different level. So much so that at the end of a game, the captain of the losing team could be sacrificed to the gods! In fact, the ball game was not played for enjoyment. The main reason was to keep the gods happy. It’s also believed that the game was played instead of going to war. The ball games we play today are much less deadly, but there are still some similarities. For example, the Maya players had to work together as a team. They built large ball courts and often played in front of crowds. TASK Watch the PowerPoint attached and visit the BBC bitesize link below to familiarise yourself with this game and the rules. YOUR TASK is to write a set of instructions of how to play the game. SOURCES: - https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/ zq6svcw/articles/zbqyy4j The Hero Twins (Twinkl) - uploaded on our website.

MUSIC

CHALLENGE – WE NEED YOU….. RHPS have come up with the challenge to create a video where all pupils are performing the song 'The Blessing' using Makaton. To do this, each year group has been allocated a section of the song to learn. Remember that all sections will be put together to make it one final piece. Our allocated section is: -

[Bridge 3] In the morning, in the evening

In your coming, and your going In your weeping, and rejoicing

He is for you, He is for you

[Refrain] He is for you, He is for you He is for you, He is for you He is for you, He is for you

YOUR TASK After learning this, remember that it needs to be recorded and then uploaded. So, you need to ask a parent or family member to record you performing the song using Makaton and then upload it to our Facebook page (with your parents’ permission).

REMEMBER that this is the week that you are being asked to perform the song, record it and if parents would like your video to be used in the overall piece, it will need to be uploaded to the Facebook page - please note that the final piece will be shared on Facebook. Any parent who wishes their child’s video of them doing Makaton to the song The Blessing uploaded, will

need to have it uploaded to Facebook by the 30th June.
