Fine Motor skills activities

Homemade Playdough Recipe from www.bbcgoodfood.com

This super-easy playdough recipe is the perfect way to spend a rainy afternoon inside. It's quick enough to hold a young child's attention and you only need a few store cupboard ingredients. Little hands can play with the results straightaway, so there's immediate gratification for all involved!

Makes 1 coloured ball Prep 10 minutes

You will need

• 8 tbsp plain flour

• 2 tbsp table salt

• 60ml warm water

• food colouring

• 1 tbsp vegetable oil

Method

1. Mix the flour and salt in a large bowl. In a separate bowl mix together the water, a few drops of food colouring and the oil.

2. Pour the coloured water into the flour mix and bring together with a spoon.

3. Dust a work surface with a little flour and turn out the dough. Knead together for a few minutes to form a smooth, pliable dough. If you want a more intense colour you can work in a few extra drops of food colouring.

4. Store in a plastic sandwich bag (squeeze out the air) in the fridge to keep it fresh. You can make a batch of colours and give away as kids’ party bag favours or hold a playdough party for your child’s next birthday.

Creative development

• Make musical instruments from household items and recycling

• Listen to different types of music – find out what everyone in the family’s’ favourite song is.

• Collage making (ripping and sticking) • Dying dry rice for messy play • Dance party in the living room! (lots of

karaoke and dancing videos on YouTube).

• Painting with unconventional tools e.g. forks, string, pasta, potato masher etc.

• Print with paint – use toys, household objects to dip into paint and print.

• Colour mixing with paint or food colouring

• Count out an amount of anything e.g. toys, spoons etc. “Give me 4 teddies” • Ask for one more / one less when counting • Use the language ‘long’ and ‘short’ e.g. “find me something longer than this” • Sing number songs e.g. 5 little speckled frogs • Recognising / matching / counting coins e.g. play ‘shops’ • Time – talk about day time / night time and morning/afternoon. Numeracy In year 1, most children will learn how to: • count reliably up to 20 objects • recite numbers up to 100, forwards and backwards and from different starting points. • Read and write numbers to at least 20 • Use number facts within 10 such as bonds of 10 (6 + 4) and doubles and halving. • Recognise and understand odd and even numbers up to 20 • Count in 2s, 10s and 5s up to 100. • Read and write number words to 10 • Mentally recall ‘one more’ and ‘one less’ of a number within 20. • Make sensible estimates • Use different combinations of money to pay for items up to 20p • Find totals and give change from 10p • Use standard units of time to read o’clock using both an analogue and 12 hour digital clock. • Recognise and name common 2D and 3D shapes.

Literacy

In year 1, most children will learn how to:

• Use initial sounds (a-z), blends sh, the and ch, and digraphs ur, er and ur in their writing to help read unfamiliar words.

• Talk about what has happened in a simple story and retell it in the correct order. • Talk about parts of stories and poems that they like and don’t like. • Listen to others, asking and answering appropriate questions. • Talk about things of interest to them. • Speak clearly to a range of people. • Join in a range of rhymes and songs. • Take turns when talking. • Write simple words such as ‘look’, ‘and’, ‘we’, ‘the’, ‘see’ and ‘it’. • Write a basic sentence using capital letters and full stops. • From upper and lower case letters correctly • Write for a range of purposes e.g stories, news, letters, lists • Read high frequency words. • Correct mistakes when they are reading • Read with expression, noticing full stops, speech marks, exclamation marks, commas and question marks. • Use titles and pictures to guess what a text is about.
