By bringing awareness to the problem of homeless high school students and working to provide them with safe housing, Sparrow’s Nest is an important new non-profit organization in Flathead County. The organization’s first group home, which will house up to five students, is scheduled to open in Whitefish in early June. Another home, which will house up to eight students, is undergoing renovations in Kalispell. Plans also are underway for a third group home in Big Fork. Jerramy calls homeless youth “the invisible homeless population,” since homeless youth are adept at “couch-surfing” and keeping the fact that they are homeless a secret. “These kids are pretty adaptable,” he comments, “but there is a certain amount of embarrassment attached to being homeless.” He also points to national statistics that 75 percent of homeless youth drop out of high school. “PayneWest has been a tremendous resource for us,” says Jerramy, who says his agent, Doc Vivian, provides excellent education and information. Donations are needed to help fund the work of Sparrow’s Nest. Jerramy encourages local businesses to adopt a “Somebody,” a stuffed figure designed to promote awareness of homeless youth, for a suggested donation of $500. A hunting trip Mike Feldman took to Flathead County 20 years ago drastically changed the lives of his family. Mike returned home to suburban Portland, Oregon with the notion of buying a restaurant and bar on McGregor Lake.

For Mike and his wife, Carolyn, the decision to purchase what is now The Lodge at McGregor Lake required them to leave their successful careers in corporate America. “I made the move because my husband wanted to and I love my husband,” says Carolyn. “But now it (the Lodge) is my baby. The employees are like family to me. The community is like family to me.”

The Lodge operates year-round, serving the community as a gathering place as well as a tourist destination. With a convenience store, restaurant/bar,

motel units, cabins, lake house, boat dock and an RV park all surrounded by spectacular scenery, the Lodge offers something for everyone.

“We are the ‘Cheers’ for Marion, Montana,” says Carolyn, referring to the 1980s TV show. Local events held at the Lodge include reunions, weddings, pool tournaments, car shows, craft shows and wine tastings.

The Lodge averages 15 employees, some of whom have been there for 17 years. “I am very proud of the fact that, as small business owners, we can provide employment for people that allows them to live in this beautiful area,” says Carolyn.

Carolyn rates the service she receives from PayneWest agents Gwen White and Brad Salonen as excellent. “They do a great job of communicating with us and shopping around for the best quotes for us.”
