Introduction to

Year 9 Options

You have reached a very exciting time in your education because you now have some choice of the subjects you study in Year 9, the year in which you will complete Key Stage 3 and choose your subjects for GCSE. The introduction of some choice at this stage is a special feature of the Hardenhuish curriculum, which gives you the opportunity to try subjects you might want to do for GCSE or spend more time doing subjects you particularly enjoy and find interesting. You will all continue with the following subjects which will account for up to 26 of your 30 periods per week.

All pupils have two option choices from the full range of courses on offer. Information about the option subjects is found on the subsequent pages of this booklet listed in alphabetical order after modern foreign languages and the excel course on pages 5 and 6, respectively. All option subjects have two lessons per week, so in total your two option choices will make up 4 lessons on your timetable next year. You may choose only one design technology option and one music option. You need to rank order your choices: 1, 2 and a reserve marked with a ‘R’ on the option form. We cannot guarantee that you will get all your option choices. For example, if there are too few pupils choosing a particular option it may not be possible to offer that subject. Your Learning Manager and teachers have looked very carefully at your progress and achievement in English, maths and modern foreign languages to consider if it is best for you to either continue with two modern foreign languages in Year 9, or study at least one modern foreign language and a course called creative media which is designed to boost your core skills in literacy and numeracy. The personalised option form shows if you will continue with two modern foreign languages in Year 9 or study one modern foreign language and the creative media programme. If your form shows that you will study one modern foreign language, you may choose to continue with either French or Spanish. You may also choose to study a second language as one of your two option choices. You are only able to choose languages that you have already started in Year 7 or Year 8. Please carefully read the information about the choices open to you and seek further advice and information from your tutor and subject teachers who will deliver presentations about the courses in this booklet during lesson time. We strongly recommend that you and your parents attend the Pupil and Parent Options Information Evening on Tuesday 1 March 2016, 7pm in the Peter Thompson Hall, when further information will be presented by Dr Bassford about the Year 9 options. You will then be able to make well informed decisions about which courses to choose. Please complete your personalised options form and return to your tutor no later than Friday 11 March 2016. N.B. With the exception of modern foreign languages, we do not insist on pupils studying Year 9 option courses for access to any particular GCSE. Some subjects say that ‘it would be an advantage if you wish to do … at GCSE’, but pupils can still choose a GCSE subject they have not studied in Year 9.

Languages are regarded as rigorous academic discipline which can lead to further studies at A-Level and beyond. Continued study of two languages in greater detail will allow you to compare the two languages, and develop your understanding of how language works.
