So, why is livable communities an important topic for AARP? As you know, AARP is an organization focused on the needs and wants of the 50+! AARP creates opportunities and drives social change to help people overcome challenges, achieve goals, pursue dreams and live better lives. And that “live better lives” portion of our mission is the push behind our initiatives under the livable communities umbrella. How do we educate and create better living for our members?

And we have been at it for awhile – this is our founder Ethel Percy Andrus at the White House with President Eisenhower demonstrating a model of the Freedom House which was built in Washington DC and incorporated many features now know as “universal design”

Thought Leadership State work Resources Again, support healthy aging This is Orange Beach/ Gulf Shores / ALABAMA where the community participated in an Active Living Workshop which ended in implementation of Complete Streets legislation. We offer…. A different version of the built environment which translates into: Increased property values, lower transportation costs, and increased spending in retail and entertainment venues. Resulting in an across the board economic benefit to the community. A 2011 study indicates customers who walk spend on average 30% more than those who come by car or bus.

Partnering with WHO to great AARP’s Network of Age Friendly Communities Resources including Baseline assessment tool Through engagement and support of AARP state office, the mayor or chief executive requests membership from AARP and commits to meeting the WHO’s criteria 2.AARP advises WHO of community’s joining AARP Network and receives membership in WHO Global Network 3.With 24 months, community must establish a robust and concrete plan of action that responds to the needs and wants identified by older adults 4.Community commits to measuring activities, reviewing plan outcomes, and reporting on them publicly 5.Community has 3 more years to implement plan and submit a report to AARP and WHO that outlines tangible and meaningful progress against action plan indicators Current communities. All these trends Brings us to the need for Universal Design The design of products and environments to be usable by all people, to the greatest extent possible. But this is really about cool, beautiful, good design or what we refer to as Better Living Design! Increasing housing choices that meet the needs of older adults of all income levels is crucial to addressing the widespread issues of housing cost burden. Homes in locations with access to transportation choices and other community assets make overall household costs more sustainable for more families and older individuals. Energy-efficient, universally-designed homes can lower monthly costs for renters and homeowners and help to ensure that homes are still adequate if needs change.
