Open your kitchen window and then inhale deeply. If the fresh sweet scent of lavender, lemon balm, rosemary, thyme or basil is not making its way to your senses, then it’s time for you to consider a kitchen gar-den filled with aromatic herbs. What is so special about kitchen gardens is that they can be cultivated in a single container on a sunny deck or patio, lined up in a row in a window box, neatly patterned in a patch beneath the kitchen window or spread out in a full-blown garden bed right outside the kitchen door. Because herbs are so fra-grant, so full of color and texture, they are as pleasant as they are useful. They accent our food and décor, while enchanting and enhancing our daily lives.

If you’ve already discovered the wonder of herbs, then you probably started with the herbs you use most often when cooking. If you don’t have an herb garden, then make a list of your favorite recipes. What herbs do you find yourself using the most? My background is Italian, so I started my kitchen garden with basil and parsley — both are easy to grow on my sunny deck.

I like to surround a few tomato plants with both the fancy and plain varieties of parsley. I keep basil in a container all by itself because it grows so profusely. When

I cook my tomato sauce, I need only open my kitchen door, step onto my deck and — snap — fresh basil and parsley at my fingertips.

Beverly Boehmke, a Trumbull resident, loves to cook. She has created a big pot full of fragrant herbs. “My husband doesn’t like obstacles in the yard when he’s mow-ing,” she explained, so potting herbs was a good solution. “I love to cook and I always use herbs. In the winter, I buy herbs in the grocery store. They can be expensive, and they’re just not the same as the ones you grow at home. It’s so much better when the herbs are fresh. I have two kinds of thyme in my container. I also have tar-ragon, rosemary, sage, chives and a few others. As soon I walk near that clay pot, I can smell the freshness of the herbs. It makes you feel good to pick something fresh. I’m thinking of making up a big pot for my daughter Emily. She loves to cook, too.” What a great gift idea!

If you’re not into cooking but love pot-pourri and crafts, then you’ll definitely want to include lavender and rosemary in your kitchen garden. A sprig or two of these pungent herbs goes a long way in handmade sachets or decorative jars. Since most herbs dry beautifully, you can create wreaths, accents and all sorts of crafts with them. once you discover herb gardening, it just might change your life.

I’m not kidding. While I’ve read stories about people quitting their day jobs to grow and sell herbs, one doesn’t need to go any further than the Nichols section of Trumbull for just such an example. Nancy Moore was in the antiques business before she discovered herbs. “Forty years ago, I was an antiques dealer,” she told me. We both laughed because now she has six acres of herbs and gardens. “It all started for me when I met the owner of Caprilands Herb Farm. That’s when I decided to start my own garden,” she said.

Today, she not only owns Moorefield Herb Farms in Trumbull but she is also the mar-ket master of Trumbull’s Farmers Market. You can also find her wonderful herbs at farmers markets in Greenwich, Westport and Weston, too. Once she started herb gardening, she got into it in a big way. A member of the Connecticut unit of the Herb Society of America, she is a certified Master Gardener. Not surprisingly, she has been invited to speak at church groups, libraries and garden clubs.

“My kitchen garden is small but it has lovage in it, which stands tall to the first story of my house,” Nancy said. Since I was not familiar with lovage, she explained that it tastes like sharp celery. Featured in her kitchen garden are culinary herbs like oregano and chives, as well as peppermint. She also has unique herbs that you are not likely to find readily anywhere else. For instance, she has African blue basil, originally from Ohio. This grows three feet tall. “It’s more ornamental than anything

else,” said Nancy, “but it is spicy, if you like spice.”

While Nancy’s kitchen garden is right out-side her back door, she also has other gar-dens. One includes 35 different varieties of tomatoes! She’s also pretty knowledgeable when it comes to keeping away deer. “I have seven-foot cedar posts and wire fenc-

ing that reaches five feet,” she explained. Now everyone who has lost a garden to deer knows that they can leap over a five- foot fence easily. “Deer are pretty finicky. I add two levels of string high above the fencing. They won’t jump over because of the string. It really works,” she said, trying to convince me. I’ve lost many a garden to a beautiful doe-eyed wonder.

What is so special about kitchen gardens is that you don’t have to be a master gardener to get great results with herbs. They’re pretty easy to grow. And oh, when you open that kitchen window on a bright summer day, you’ll inhale deeply and enjoy herbal perfume.

“We’re very much into the details here,” Marco continues. “We’re lucky to have an amazing array of designers within a 30-mile radius who have helped us create our fantastic displays. hotspot, Match. Surrounded by heaps of ravishing spring produce including fresh, fat asparagus, golden and ruby beets, plump fava beans, wispy fiddleheads and buxom mushrooms, Chef Storch prepared a magnificent menu, celebrating the boun-ty of the spring marketplace.

“I love all aspects of food — for me, it’s all about touch and taste, love and texture,” said Chef Storch. “Spring is my favorite season,” he said with a smile. “I just love the new crop — the freshness, the light-ness of the flavors. Freshness and crisp-ness are so important; if the food doesn’t look good, it’s not good.”

The evening’s menu was an explosion of textures and flavors, both raw and cooked. The class tasted freshly shelled organic peas, which Chef Storch loves to put out for his own guests as an appetizer, mixed with a bit of chopped mint. He went on to prepare a salad of shaved raw asparagus dressed with fresh lemon juice, parmesan cheese, olive oil, earthy truffle oil, lightly fried leeks and shards of truffle, served

atop a custardy warm truffle polenta. A resounding “Wow” was heard from the assembled crowd.

Those shelled peas were married with rendered bacon, mint, lemon, butter, slow-roasted onions, salty baked proscuitto chips and a young pecorino cheese. Doesn’t it just sound spectacular? The incredible goodness continued as Chef Storch pre-pared a sweet, meaty, wild striped bass with spring vegetables and enormous loin lamp chops, perfectly grilled and present-ed with a mint puree, roasted beets and a tangy goat cheese. As one guest, lost in delicious delirium murmured, “This food is incredible.”

It is my destiny to garden in the shade. Yes, at times I have yearned for a sunny yard aflame with roses, sunflowers, morning glories and a bed for tomatoes and herbs. But, while shade gardens lack some of the brightness and boldness of sunny plots, they make up for it with subtlety, softness and serenity.

The hardest lesson for me has been to embrace the shady conditions and forget about trying to force sun-lovers to struggle on my wooded property in Redding. The most elegant rose is not beautiful when it

is leggy and leaning for sun. Once I limited my choices to shade-tolerant plants only, my life got easier and my garden grew hap-pier. But because many shade plants flower early, before the trees leaf out, it can be a challenge to keep the color going past the end of June. (This is even more the case this year, with plants a good three weeks ahead of their usual patterns.) After 15 years of working to make my garden span the sea-sons, I can share a few strategies.

Alliums and Daylilies (Hemerocallis) are two stalwarts for light shade that bring color and height through late June and July. Both come in a wide range of colors, are

easy to grow and will multiply. The larger the clump you have, the longer the bloom time. The recently introduced “Returns” series of Daylilies have been bred to bloom repeatedly over the summer, though they tend to be smaller than other Hemerocallis. (Unfortunately, Daylilies are deer candy; the Alliums are not.) And the big, dramatic Alliums like Globemaster leave behind wonderful seed heads that make impres-sive dried flowers.

For blossoms in July and August, my go-to shrub is the Hydrangea. Banks of these bountiful shade lovers will decorate weeks of summer parties, with large flowers of pink, blue, white or lime green. Two favor-ites are the blue Lacecap (H. macrophylla Blue Wave) — whose blossoms are broad but flat and more delicate than the mop-heads — and Limelight, a reliable bloomer with a graceful vase-like shape and conical blossoms of key-lime green ... very refresh-ing on a hot summer day and a great dried flower! The Oakleaf Hydrangea (H. querci-folia) is unbeatable for its combination of large white flowers that fade to pink and richly colored fall foliage, which drops to

reveal exfoliating bark for the winter. New varieties offer ever-longer bloom times. Just two warnings about Hydrangeas: Deer love them, and you need to pay attention to the pruning needs of your particular variety to avoid removing a season’s worth of flowers. (A lesson I learned the hard way.)

Other midsummer flowers that perform well in part shade include Globe thistle (Echinops ritro), with its spiky orbs of silvery blue; Bee Balm (Monarda) with robust red, pink or purple mopheads; the Rocket (Ligularia) for spears of chrome yel-low; Black Eyed Susan (Rudbeckia), and Coneflower (Echinacea purpurea), which is usually mauve pink, but comes in a

wonderful glowing white, too (E. purpurea White Swan). These are all tall, roughly three feet high, will form expansive clus-ters and long-lasting seed heads and resist deer damage while attracting bees and butterflies. Except for the Rocket, these can handle some drought.

Almost as hard to find as it is to say is the spectacular Thalictrum rochebrunianum. Its stalks will shoot up to six feet tall or higher in part shade to explode into a gentle fireworks of tiny purple flowers with yellow centers. No one visits my garden without commenting on it. Its relatives are not as valuable, so hold out for the real thing!

To fill gaps in your borders — in both space and time — make use of two less- impos-ing perennials that bloom all summer in medium shade. The first is Dicentra formo-sa, a bleeding heart often overshadowed by its more eye-catching cousin, Dicentra spectabilis. (Spectabilis is a stunner from April till the summer heat shrivels it to leave an ugly hole in the garden bed.) D. formosa forms compact mounds (12 to 18 inches) of delicately incised, ferny leaves topped by small, candy pink hearts. A similar workhorse is the dainty Corydalis lutea. Finely cut gray-blue foliage sup-ports clusters of tiny yellow trumpets that shine in the shade. Both plants bloom and spread with no special care and are deer resistant. Use them in groups to lighten up dark areas and lead the eye along.

Pink Turtlehead (Chelone lyonii) will take you into fall, pairing deep-green leaves with hot-pink tubular blooms from late summer on. Try Monkshood (Aconitum) for tall pur-ple spires that contrast beautifully with the

An old adage says that doctors make the worse patients. To this I would add that those in the construction, contracting and trade industries are the toughest clients to please when their own homes are being built from the ground up or being renovated.

From what I have seen of friends who have undergone everything from tearing down a house and starting again — using only high-quality material, mostly imported from Italy — to kitchen makeovers, only the best will suffice. This means that no matter how long it takes to complete the project, the finished home must be perfect.

One Monroe family, who prefer to remain anonymous, spent several months looking at local real estate because they desper-ately wanted bigger living quarters than the three-bedroom, relatively small Cape house they’d bought in the early 1990s. However, they quickly found that every-thing on the market they could comfort-ably afford was either similar to what they had or “uninteresting.”

Having made his living as a carpenter and mason, the husband knew exactly what he wanted. He had worked on enough luxury homes in Greenwich, Darien and New Canaan to have seen the quality details that beautiful homes possess. It was then that he approached his wife and children about the idea of adding onto and creating their “dream home” on the same Monroe property. There would be no teardowns; they would simply expand and renovate.

Well, this project turned out to be anything but simple. When I think about how this undertaking kept growing in depth and detail — taking much longer than origi-nally planned — another adage comes to mind: “If you’re going to do something, do it right.”

After a few months of maneuvering around workmen, the family was forced to leave their living quarters and sleep in the base-ment. However, when the water needed to be permanently shut down — as the kitchen and bathrooms were refinished — they finally were forced to move in with their in-laws, who graciously invited them to stay at their home in Newtown.

For the next six months, the children were shuttled back and forth to their respective

Monroe schools and after-school activities. They were, in fact, living out of suitcases as they anxiously awaited the completion of their “simple” expansion project.

When they were finally able to move back, a beautiful home awaited them. The new home included a large master bedroom suite above the garage. (The garage had also been expanded to now accommodate more than one vehicle.) The suite included a master bathroom — its size rivaling many bedrooms in standard Capes. There are elegant windows and lighting fixtures and, of course, a hot tub. The tiling throughout the shower and bath are exquisite and imported from Italy.

A Westport family decided to tear down a home they purchased in one of the town’s prestigious neighborhoods because they, too, wanted their home to suit their family’s personal needs. The new house was designed by the husband, a contractor, with assistance from a local architect. As I walked through the elegant home, the wife

pointed out that every bit of space was used efficiently. For example, the finished “attic” on the third floor is well lit and is used as a school room for the two children that she home schools. One section of the room is for art projects, and there is a large table with a deep sink nearby. There is also a kiln for ceramic work.

The lower floor was made for recreation. Along with a state-of-the-art exercise room, media center and game room — with a big-screen television and cozy couches — there is a large wine cellar in a dining room. With its Old World flavor, dark-wood paneling and large dining table in the cen-ter, the room has accommodated many wine-tasting parties.

The main floor also is a great place for entertaining. The kitchen opens to a per-fectly groomed backyard. My eye instantly

gravitated to the outdoor oven, where pizza is handmade and served to the children’s friends at patio tables with umbrellas. The décor reminded me of a café in Italy or France.

This kind of “dream home,” though, did not come cheaply or easily. In fact, because the husband was in the business, he insisted on using only the highest- qual-ity building materials and fine interior details. During the lengthy construction, this family, too, was forced to move out. For a year, they rented the adjacent house, which conveniently was available, while their home was rebuilt.

Although the housing market seems to be recovering from its recent slump, it seems to me that people are more likely to stay put and redesign their current houses into their dream homes.

golds, reds and oranges of fall. Deer won’t bother them; they are poisonous. Sweet Autumn Clematis (Clematis terniflora) is really a must to brighten part shade. A vigorous climber (to 20 feet!), it produces masses of small, white, scented stars from August till frost. Place it near your seating area so you can enjoy the aroma, but not so close that the bees it attracts will pester you.

A groundcover that ought to get more use is Plumbago (Ceratostigma plum-baginoides), which will adjust to most any soil and, given moderate sun, pro-vides three seasons of beauty. Appealing green spoon-shaped leaves spread close to the ground. At summer’s end, small but electric blue flowers accentuate the autumn hues around them. As the weather cools, their leaves turn a potent orange-red.

Two low growers that bring punch to their surroundings with just their foliage are Japanese Forest Grass (Hakonachloa aurea) and Lysimachia nummularia, better known as Golden Creeping Jenny. The chartreuse- and green-striped blades of the forest grass cascade gracefully, mimicking the flow of water. It is slow to spread, but will reward your patience. Jenny, on the other hand, crawls rapidly in almost any conditions,

spreading the joy of her lemon-lime disc-shaped leaves. She is an attractive filler for difficult areas and is easy enough to pull out where she’s not wanted.

Finally, don’t forget to intersperse some shade-tolerant annuals for season-long color. In addition to the ubiquitous impa-tiens, it pays to look for Browallia and Gardenmeister Fuschia. Both are valuable for their upright habits. I am especially

fond of Browallia’s clear-blue blossoms, and Gartenmeister produces coral trum-pet-shaped blooms surrounded by bur-gundy leaves — a striking combina-tion that works with pinks, reds, corals and greens.

All of the plants I have named prefer moist, but well drained soil, though many will

make do with drier conditions. Surround them with mulch in spring to maintain moisture, discourage weeds and enrich the soil. (I shred and use the fall leaves from my many trees.)

Bring some of these plants into your gar-den, and the next stifling summer day, when your friends are seeking shelter from their sunny yards, invite them to join you as you relax in the cooler, quieter pleasures of the shade.
