Please takeadvantage of the opportunity to give back, jump in with both feet and enjoythe gift of giving, it is what makes us DYCers.

GENERAL MANAGERJIM SIDES

FROM THE SECRETARYTODD J. EIB

Greetings! I hope this article findseveryone doing well! It has been said ifyou don't like the weather in Michiganwait 5 minutes… it will change. Well, wehad all four seasons in four days…Spring, Summer, then snow (SNOW..InApril) then Fall and now back to Spring. And we broke a record for snowfall. 94.8 inches surpassing the record of 93.6set in 1880-81. So hopefully Springremains around and we can get on topof some maintenance and groundswork.

We have many, many events and spe-cials going on at the DYC and we havecreated a 6 month Master Calendar for everyone to see theupcoming events. The calendar is posted on the website and hardcopies are available at the Club. Monthly calendars will appear inthe MainSheet as always.

There truly is something for everyone, from Trivia on Tuesdaysto 10 Buck Tuesdays, Lobsterfests, Specials on Wednesdays,Theme Buffets, and Fine Dining in the Fountain Room… and thelist goes on and on. If there is an event or dining option that youwould like us to consider please send it to the F&B team ormyself.

Also, I held the first of the quarterly State of the Club address.I will set the dates and times of the other 3 and get on the calen-dar. A copy of the bullet points of the address will be made avail-able online and via mail to those unable to attend.

"To BEEF or Not To BEEF"Along with regular news and happenings I also like to keep

membership informed of bigger events that may impact you. If younoticed recently your shopping cart is less full but the bill is muchhigher… It is not just you. Prices are climbing and are predictedto get higher and higher especially on beef and produce. That willcreate a trickle down on pork and chicken as demand increases, raising the cost of those items. If you have a freezer, pack it fullnow. Invest in a good vacuum sealer and meats can be held 8 to12 months.

Fruits have also taken a hit with the weather and prices will behigher than usual this year, and dairy is predicted to hit nearrecord highs. The issue with the fruit and produce will be 2-fold asthe price will increase and quality will likely decrease. Shop smartand you can mitigate any loss or cost factors. In fact I will be hold-ing a "Cooking Class" that will detail what to look for in the storesand what "deals" to avoid.

This is due to many factors. The cattle industry has lost millionsof head of cattle to a virus as well as weather. Grain feed hasgone up significantly due to weather and a poor crop harvest andfuel prices are adding to the cost for the price of shipping.

At the DYC, we have seen our ground beef double in pricesince the beginning of the year and short ribs literally climbed$3.00 more per pound overnight. Our team is committed to offer-ing the best product at the right price. We will do our very best tokeep prices set through the season. If certain items become pro-hibitive, we will adjust the menu to keep a good variety and bestpricing practices that we want to be known for.

See you at the DYC!Slainte, Sonas agus beartas.(Cheers, Health, Wealth and Happiness).

Greetings from the Board room. This monthwas busy with follow-up on many tasks. TheHouse Committee has been reviewing manyinitiatives that pertain to our clubhouse andgrounds. The Finance Committee has spenttime working on our current line of credit, along with a host of other topics. The Boardapproved extending the revolving credit loanwith very favorable savings on the interestrate. Overall, the financial condition continuesto improve and I will allow the Treasurer toreview with you.The Board approved toextend the current membership specialthrough the spring, as the MembershipDepartment has found favorable response. With that, the Board passed a standing rules motion, declaring that all newmembers retain a valid credit card on file with the club, as permitted bystate law. This will assist with delinquent accounts accruing. The Boardalso supported Management in the decision to keep the Spirit of DYC ondry-dock this year. Ridership has fallen from 15,000 to 2,400 passengersper year and unknown repairs needed, would place a strain on our currentbudget. Following the highly successful Dancing at the Grand event, theBoard approved a new "Dance Club" with John Gibson as the Chairman. In a unanimous vote, the Board also approved moving forward with PhaseI of the Seal the Envelope Campaign, which will focus on the clubhouse'seast end sun room, removal of the projector room, repair the flat roof, stuc-co and applicable restoration items. This is a great step forward for ourclubhouse. Every month I look forward to our discussions and you canalways reach me at: [email protected]

TRADITIONS COMMITTEEPATRICIA THULL O'BRIEN

Location, Rules and Behavior, Traditions,Management, Membership/Marketing arethe major areas of significance that surfacedwithin the Traditions Committee. From ourFocus/Facilitation Sessions, each of thesetopics received several comments and sev-eral comments crossed over between topics. The committee has reviewed all of thesematerials at length and has made severalrecommendations. Those recommendationswill be disseminated to management andother appropriate concerns for improvementaction.

Additionally, we have listed the traditionalevents that are part of our rich DYC history in the months when theywould generally occur. We will be adding a description, which willcover detail, the past significance, and the tradition, within each event.A former publication has also surfaced and the committee feels thatwith a bit of updating and little cost, this could potentially serve as ahelpful guide for our membership.Retrieval of traditional and historical data is also an important part of

our mission. As such, we have defined several areas where this doc-umentation work has already been accomplished or continues to beaccomplished, as well as a few new expanses. We will work to coor-dinate with current efforts as well as start new initiatives.

"Dancing at

the Grand" Was a novel Club fundraising

success!

It was a great evening for dancingat the Detroit Yacht Club on Saturday

evening, April 5th. Paul King and the Rhythm Society Orchestra provid-ed a wonderful evening of classic 1930s and '40s music including In theMood, Tuxedo Junction, and Unforgettable. Paul Carryer & JulianaSchoon gave a wonderful dance lesson. A faithful crew of DYC membersvolunteered to handle the flood of people who attended the dance. Manythanks to John and Colleen Tompkins, Lisa Bartnik and Hugh Cairns,John & Midge Savage, Mark Lifter & Arlene Oakland, Lisa Nowak, ErikaGray and Kelli & Sean Murphy for all their help collecting money, hand-ing out wristbands, and directing traffic. About 420 people danced thenight away from 8:15 until midnight. Dean and Kelly Elliott invited friendsenough for three tables and the Gibson's invited multiple tables of theirdancing friends. Several DYC members enjoyed the dance includingAndy and Erica Ciupak, John and Colleen Tompkins, Greg and LisaNowak, Dean and Kelly Elliott, Erika Gray and Chip Kleinbrook, LisaBartnik and Hugh Cairns, Pat Thull O'Brien, Todd Eib, Harry and MaryKurrie, Mark Lifter, Jim Gierlach, and Muffy Kroha and friends.

Tables were arranged in the East Lounge, Peacock Alley, and in theFountain Room for overflow seating. The Orchestra set up on the westend of the original ballroom and faced the East Lounge. The entire ball-room floor filled up with dancers all night long. When it was time to restyour feet, the tables in the East Lounge and Peacock Alley allowed forconversation as well as a good view of the dancers and the dance floor. The total amount of money collected was $10,600. Total expenses were

approximately $3,500 which covered the cost of the 15 piece Orchestraand other miscellaneous expenses (bartenders, cashiers, the coatcheck, tablecloths.) A total of over $7,000 was raised for the DetroitYacht Club Foundation. In addition, the drink tickets bars ensured cluboperations made a profit that night as well. Joseph and Emily did a won-derful job coordinating the night's activities and brought this entireevening to a successful conclusion. Many thanks to all who helped andattended. We hope to do this again next year!

Though the launch was later than it was hoped, and thanks to allthe volunteers who helped, and the staff of the Club who helped getready, it went without a hitch. The boats are in and the Spring racingseries has begun for all who have Skipper cards. Carrie LeZotte isrunning this program. If you have earned a skipper card, come on andjoin us Saturday mornings.

The Spring Instruction series began April 29th, Tuesdays andThursday evenings at 6:00 pm. The Scots program is a great introduc-tion to sailing but more than that, the Flying Scot is a wonderful boatto race. Those who take the advanced sailing class with JohnGallagher will learn how to fly spinnakers, and more advanced tech-niques like how to sail safely if heavy weather comes up.

This year the instructors are offering a new program for those whohave previously reached the level of Helmsman. Connie Allen will helpyou move up to get your Skipper card.

Volunteer Instructors needed: Mondays to teach Scots; Tuesdaysand Thursdays for class. The program depends on the work of manyvolunteers. Volunteers launch the boats, keep them clean, andinstruct. Volunteers teach sailing to beginners and those who want torefresh their skills. I am thankful for all those who have offered to help, and look forward to many others who will lend a hand as instructors. We will train those who have not instructed before, so please consid-er teaching.

Questions or to get on the Flying Scots email list, call me at (586) 899-8708 or email me at [email protected].

DYC MEMBER IN THE NEWSSTEPHEN HENDERSON ~ PULITZER PRIZE WINNER

Another DYC member makes the news! We'redelighted to report that Stephen Henderson, editorialpage editor of the Detroit Free Press, in April wonjournalism's most prestigious award, the PulitzerPrize, for his commentary in the newspaper. Stephentook the honor for a collection of columns thatunflinchingly examined the reasons that led toDetroit's declaring bankruptcy last year and, on amore hopeful note, some potential pathways to

recovery. Stephen is a Detroit native and resident of the city, living not farfrom Belle Isle, and he and his family are frequent users of the Club.

Henderson, 43, has worked at the Free Press since 2007 following an ear-lier stint in the 1990’s. He previously covered the U.S. Supreme Court forfour years with the Washington Bureau of the former Knight Ridder newspa-per chain.

Henderson has cultivated an audience beyond newsprint and online jour-nalism. He is the host of a weekly talk show, "American Black Journal," andco-host of the news wrap-up show "MiWeek," both on Detroit PublicTelevision. In March, he became a correspondent for WXYZ-TV (Channel 7).

He is a 1988 graduate of University of DetroitJesuit High School and a 1992 graduate of theUniversity of Michigan, where he worked onthe student newspaper, the Michigan Daily.

A MESSAGE FROM THEDYC FOUNDATIONMARK LIFTER, PRESIDENT

Recent meetings among the DYCFoundation Trustees and the DYC'sOfficers and Directors resulted in jointapprovals of a plan to proceed this springwith the first phase of Seal the Envelopeexterior repairs to our historic clubhouse.Final arrangements are now being madewith qualified contactors selected in acompetitive bidding process. The projectis expected to begin by mid-May with alate June target completion date for thekey work elements.

Thanks to the generous tax-deductibledonations of scores of DYC members, the Foundation will provide funding of $137,253 to the DYC for pay-ment of contractors, engineers and construction managers. Thisamount includes a sizeable contingency fund to cover any unexpectedextra problems or needs that sometimes become evident only as thework unfolds in a 90-year-old structure. Any amount remaining in thecontingency fund can be applied to further needed repairs and restora-tions that have been approved for funding by the Foundation and theDYC Board.

The project will begin with demolition of the long-unused and badly-deteriorated projector room on the east roof. This room is a non-his-toric add-on to the building that became a significant source of leaksand recurring damage to the second floor sunroom overlooking thepool. Next, there will be reconstruction and repairs to both flat and tileroof areas. This will include reconstructing the leaky valleys in the tileroof, which are the source of the increasingly damaged beams in theeast ballroom ceiling. The project also will address new stucco for theeast wall, and repair or replacement of tiles, drainage areas, copingand decorative items. Pending availability of the allocated contingencyfunds and potential additional fund raising, we hope to soon addressthe damages to east wall masonry, glass block and lintels.

We're excited to be ready to launch this major exterior repair andrestoration project. It's the first phase of the many that will be neededto restore one of the jewels of Belle Isle and Detroit. It would not behappening without the voluntary donations of our members who, through the DYC Foundation, are investing in the long-term future ofthe DYC. Together, we can make more great things happen.Other Foundation News -

• Thanks to efforts of John and Toni Gibson and Erika Gray (amongothers) in organizing the Dancing at the Grand event, the Foundationwas grateful to receive a donation in excess of $7,000 from the event'sproceeds. Wow!

House Rules Reminders - MayNow that spring is finally here, we ask members to familiarize

themselves with House Rules governing our DYC grounds and har-bor.

Docking in the DYC harbor is governed by House Rule 10 and isalso supplemented by the "Dock Rules". These rules are for thesafety, general order, and enjoyment of our harbor by all of ourMembers and Guests. Please help us keep the harbor clean andsafe by following the rules and remember that loud noises fromstereos, radios, etc. are restricted after 11pm. Navigation lights, including on dinghies, should be used after dark in the harbor andSpeed of Boats (Rule 11) requires vessels to be operated in thevicinity of the DYC harbor and docks in such a way as to cause " aslittle disturbance as possible and without wake".

Visiting Yachts (Rule 12) deals with guests from other clubs,House Rule 10(j) deals with member requests for guest wells. DYCMembers with boats docked elsewhere may bring a boat to a GuestWell for up to two weeks. Non-member visitors may, upon applica-tion or invitation, use the harbor for Board-approved special events(such as Grand Prix weekend, rendezvous, regatta parties) and aresubject to the same House Rules and Dock Rules as DYC mem-bers. Assistant Gen. Manager Bill Bowman and Harbor Master RossBissell can help you navigate your way to a great time in accor-dance with these rules. Please reach out to them with any ques-tions or requests.

DYC grounds are covered by several House Rules. These includeParking (Rule 15), Bicycles (Rule 16), Property of Members (Rule 8)and Docking (Rule 10). Parking is allowed in designated DYC park-ing lots (except as otherwise permitted) and not in fire lanes orblocking other vehicles. Vehicles generally may not be stored inDYC parking lots (Rule 15(d)) and, between April 15- Nov. 15, boatson trailers are not permitted for more than 24 hours (see HouseRule 10(e)). Storage of any item of personal property at DYC is atyour own risk. See the Clean-up Day Notice and reminder thatproperty that is not properly tagged as belonging to a current mem-ber or improperly stored is subject to removal.

These rules are pretty simple and easy to comply with. Pleasecontact GM Sides or his staff with any questions. 15
