CLC Summer Hours

The College of Lake County will be closed on Monday, May 25 to observe the Memorial Day holiday.

Starting the week of June 8 through the week of August 3, the college will be open Mondays-Thursdays and closed on Fridays. Hours of operation will be:

• Admissions: 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.• Cashier’s Windows: 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.• Personal Enrichment: 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The regular Monday-Friday workschedule will resume the week of August 10.

Using the new Barron’s ACTtextbook by Brian Stewart as a guide, learnto identify deficiencies in your content areasin which you need further study and how topull out critical information relevant to thetest. Perform warm-up drills that willmaximize the effectiveness of practiceexercises and equip you to identify the basicsyou need to know for each test section.Complete practice exercises to help choosethe best answers and avoid commonmistakes. THE HISTORY OF THE MIDDLE EAST When diplomats draw lines on a map tocreate countries and pay more attention totheir political alliances and machinationsthan they do to the history and ethnicity ofthe peoples who will live in those countries,disaster ensues. The Middle East thatemerged from WWI was the result of a seriesof blunders made by Great Britain withsignificant assists from France, Russia andthe Ottoman Empire. We will enjoy the richhistory of the region and then examine themap drawing and how that contributed to theturbulence of today. Instructor: Gary Midkiff.

OIL AND THE MIDDLE EAST Through a random act of nature, transactedover many centuries, the one item mostneeded by an industrial world is found in thegreatest abundance beneath the sands of aregion that had been largely unimportantsince the apex of the Persian Empire. URBAN PLANNING IN THE MIDDLE EAST Charles Hasbrouck, a Director at bKLArchitecture, will discuss “Urban Planning inthe Middle East,” focusing on the design ofnew cities that respect the culture and reflectthe unique environmental conditions of theregion. The talk will touch upon the historyof city planning, review current trends inurban design and investigate the challengesof building sustainable communities in thedesert environment. FROM RICHARD J. TO RAHM - THE MODERN MAYORS OF CHICAGO The sudden death of Richard J. Daley left thecity in shock and politics in turmoil. For aweek, nobody even knew who the newmayor actually was – the city charter didn’tspecify who would take over! In thisfascinating multimedia presentation, one ofCLC’s favorite historians will trace thehistory of the mayors of Chicago fromMichael Bilandic took through Richard M.Daley. We will see how shifting ethnicalliances, the rise of women voters and thechallenge of bringing a rust belt city into the21st century are reflected in the personalitiesof mayors such as Jane Byrne, HaroldWashington and Richard Daley. FROM AL CAPONE TO SAM GIANCANA -ORGANIZED CRIME IN CHICAGO Organized crime came in with a bang –literally – with the rise of prohibition. Andno city was more under the control of themob than Chicago. This exciting look at therise of the Chicago mob in the early daysculminating with Al Capone finishes with afascinating look at how Sam Giancanachanged the Syndicate in Chicago from agroup of bootlegging dogs to an internationalpowerhouse that influenced Americanpresidential elections and American foreignpolicy. We’ll examine how ethnicneighborhoods, Chicago city politics and theKennedy administration all played into thetremendous influence of organized crime inChicago. Instructor: Barry Bradford.

CITY OF NEIGHBORHOODS, CITY OF IMMIGRANTS Chicago is a city of neighborhoods settled bywaves of immigrants. The Irish came early.Soon there was a Germantown and then aSwedish area known as Andersonville, aUkrainian Village, Polonia and Jew Town.Hungarians, Czechs, Slovaks, Italians andGreeks followed. In the morning session wewill examine how each of these waves ofimmigrants tended to group with people ofsimilar language and customs and createdunique ethnic enclaves that made Chicago acultural mosaic.

In the afternoon session we will pick up thestory of multicultural Chicago with the greatAfrican American migration to the city in theera of the world wars. Since the 1980s, it hasbeen Asians, Indians, Puerto Ricans andCentral and South Americans who havedominated the ranks of immigrants and whocontinue to make Chicago one of the mostdiverse and exciting cities in the world.

On our Wednesday tour we will see first-hand how many of these waves ofimmigrants left their unique mark on the city of neighborhoods. Instructor: David Groeninger.

WONDROUS WRITERS FROM CHICAGO What do Nelson Algren, Gwendolyn Brooksand Sandra Cisneros have in common? Allwere Chicago writers and each revealed aparticular cultural element in the “City of BigShoulders.” Algren showed us the underbelly,Brooks brought the African Americanexperience to light and Cisneros portrayedlife in the Latino community. While Cisneroscurrently resides in Texas, her best knownbook, “House on Mango Street” takes placein Chicago and many references to locationsin the city will likely be familiar. Star Trek: Resistance is Futile (Xplore! Camp Grades 7-12)You’ve already been assimilated. During its almost 50-year history, Star Trek has inspired the world with its innovative view of the future and its amazing characters. In this fun, interactive camp, discover the history of Star Trek and explore how it has influenced society by changing and inspiring people’s lives.
