Message from the President Message from the President

Happy Holidays to Everyone,

Here it is the last president’s letter for the year and my 2019 term! The end of 2018 ended in a whirl-wind and I had no idea, until I was asked at that time, that I would even be president of this incredi-ble Association once again. Many people have as-ked me why I would be president 3 times and all I can say is, “Why wouldn’t you want to be president or at least be involved.” All the work that is done by the Homebuilder’s Association on a Local, State and National level is staggering. I cannot even ima-gine that I would be in the Homebuilding Industry if it were not for this Association with all it does for all of us. It is unimaginable what housing would cost and even what it would be like if this Association was not representing us. On every level we fight for the industry to try to keep regulations and costs in check. On just a Local and State level, I want you to think about how much our building permits would cost if the Association was not there to fight for every dollar, what other fees would be added if we were not monitoring and lobbying? We would have fire sprinklers in every home on top of the thou-sands of dollars of extra costs. What rate would the excise tax be, if we were not monitoring? Just look at what happened when excise tax did become a reality, we were such a small State Association was passed when our few members turned their back for a minute. How unaffordable would housing be without this Association? I can only presume it would be staggering within the realm of 10 to 15% higher. So, you may ask why I or other members

are involved and why some accept leadership positions. It’s not about building a resume, being on a power trip, or wanting a title, it’s because they believe in our industry and want to be on the front lines, fighting for the American Dream. If we cannot produce a product people want or can afford, they won’t buy it and we don’t have a business. Thanks to all those who get involved by attending mon-thly meetings, participating in committees, being board members or even becoming an officer in the Association, I can’t say thank you enough or loud enough, you are what this Association is about. And for those people and businesses who are not mem-bers but should be, spread the word and become members, and get involved. It’s not about just beco-ming a member and getting more work; you only get out what you put in and sitting back and waiting gets you nothing.

I would like to thank the Staff for everything they do and how they make the Association great. Cheryl, Justynne, and Jody thank you for all your hard work and making this year a pleasure to be President. When you have outstanding Staff like the 3 of you it makes it enjoyable for all of us volunteers to be involved.

Also, a huge thanks my fellow officers, Teri McNal-ly, Tyler Tribby, Darin Howie, Shane Regelin and Daene Boomsma thanks for all the support and effort you gave me and all the time you volunteer and dedicate to this fine Association. And of course, thanks to all the Directors and those who served on the Board of Directors for that past year.

As I leave office for the third time, I know next year you’re going to be in good hands. Daene Booms-ma is a strong leader for us and once again we have an outstanding team who will work together to further our Association. There are so many wonder-ful things on the horizon for the Black Hills Home Builders its going to be an exciting 2020.

Its been a pleasure to serve as President, thank you for allowing me to serve you and our industry.

I Would like to thank everyone who got out and recruited in 2019! CONGRATULATIONS to Amber Irving the only winner of the RECRUIT 5 new builder or associate members and to get your 2020 dues for free. Home Show Home Show

Booths are filling up quickly for the Annual Home Show. It is looking like it will be another successful year. In years past you have all helped tremendously by including the Home Show in your advertising. Please check with your marketing and advertising folks, and

think about including a “Come see us at the Home Show…” tag line in your pre-show advertising. It’s never too early to start planning!

This is a great opportunity to showcase your business at a low cost. Sponsorships are available in slots starting as low as $100 and as high as $5,000. We have a level for every budget so don’t miss out!

We do still have a few Block Booths available if you are interested. Our goal is to bring in those vendors with larger construction equipment so that show attendees can get up close and personal with the products.

The “Do It Yourself” stage will be back again for 2020. We are

interested in new and fresh hands-on presentations to ensure the DIY stage is a continued success.

Please keep spreading the word! It definitely takes all of us to make each show bigger and better than the last.

Contracts are available on pages 14-20 in the Newsletter.

If you have any questions, please call the Association office at (605) 348-7850. You can also email [email protected].

To savvy home builders, the Digital Transformation isn’t just a buzz phrase; it’s a key growth mechanism.

With business environments constantly changing and disruptive competitors coming from everywhere, technology has evolved to be highly accessible. As such, a company’s digital transformation involves embracing and leading with the unknown. Data is the new oil, and every home building company needs to become a data-driven company.

Lead by industry experts Al Trellis, Nicholas Durault and Donny Couto, the NAHB International Builders’ Show® (IBS) Master Workshop “The Digital Transformation of a Home Builder” will focus on important changes in technology, software and data that you can embrace if you want to increase profits and stay ahead of your competition.

Topics discussed include artificial intelligence, the pros and cons of interactive floor plans and VR/AR, how software can improve operations, overcoming the uncertainty and difficulty of change, and more.

In this three-hour advanced session, you will:Gain greater insight into the opportunities to fully utilize the technological tools available to enhance or operational proces-

ses. Learn what digital transformation means for your business, how to self-evaluate, how to initiate change and how technology plays a part in your vision.Increase your understanding of artificial intelligence (AI), and learn how it can be used to enhance your company’s profit and operational performance.Understand the importance of data mining and learn how to better harness the data you are already collecting to make decisions.

Master Workshops are changing at IBS 2020!There are some big changes in store for the Builders’ Show, and one such change is Master Workshops. Thank you Curt Cartwright For your GenerosityThank you Curt Cartwright For your Generosity

When you work for a nonprofit, it is not every day that someone calls and says that they have a life-changing donation for you.

The Allied Arts has served our community since 1971. We support the growth of arts organizations and their audiences, work to keep the arts in schools, preserve our diverse cultural community activities, and empower the efforts of artists and organizations to make a difference in our neighborhoods. When I received the call from Curt Cartwright of Rapid City Window & Glass Inc., I almost did not believe it! Anyone that knows Curt knows that he loves a good joke and is always laughing. We had just gone through the Budget Hearings with the City of Rapid City, and Mayor Allender had cut our funding almost 30% for 2020! I thought Curt was pulling my leg when he said that the family of pianist, Virginia Mitchell, was looking for a new home for her beloved concert piano! I could not believe what I was hearing! A concert piano is worth thousands of dollars, and you do not come across them very often. Through the Allied Arts, we support 17 arts organizations throughout the Black Hills. One of these organizations is the Rapid City Children’s Chorus, and I immediately thought of them! They have a re-hearsal room at the Performing Arts Center and have to rent a piano whenever they have a performance with the children. I thought this would be an incredible gift for these children and teachers.

However, how could we possibly get a concert piano moved from the home in Black Hawk to the Performing Arts Center in Rapid City? Pianos are delicate instruments, and you just cannot put them in the back of a truck and move them. I was afraid that the cost to get the piano moved was going to be beyond what we could afford to do. I made a few inquiries and was able to find Bruce Schwartz, a local piano techni-cian. He could not believe the generosity of this gift and agreed to donate his services so that the children would be able to benefit from this fantastic opportunity! We had some-one with the expertise; now we needed a trailer and some muscle! Curt Cartwright’s team provided the “manpower,” and Jeff Lage of Lage Construction offered his enclosed trailer for the safe transportation to the Performing Arts Center. The plan to get the piano moved just came together so beautifully.

The Allied Arts were honored to facilitate this gift, and we could not have made this happen without the generous sup-port of everyone involved!

The concert piano will provide the gift of music for generations to come.

Thank you so much!GiGi Lage, Executive Director Allied Arts
