The Color Index classifies colors according to their (textile) application General classification Dyes: soluble

Pigments: insoluble

Lakes: insoluble salts of dyes

Further classification of dyes according to their use:

Acid dyes: water soluble, anionic

Basic dyes: water soluble, cationic usually bad stability profiles

Direct dyes: water soluble, anionic, larger than acid dyes

Food dyes: = acid dyes
