Around the School It has been a busy time as we approach the end of the school year and last week we were able to celebrate with a number of events that acknowledge the many contributions our students and families make to our College. Last Monday we held our Sports Presentation Night. The night allowed the College to acknowledge the students who represent us so well on the sporting field. It was great to see over 150 students in attendance as well as all the coaches and staff that helped manage the many different teams. Our Sport Captains from 2016 and our 2017 Sport Captains helped facilitate the evening and did a great job. I would like to acknowledge both Emma Boyle and Lachlan Abbott for all of their hard work in the coordination of the College sport program. On Thursday night last week, our music students and families came together one last time for the year and celebrated with our Music Ensemble Night. It was a beautiful evening to sit and listen to the many ensembles we have at the College. The Parents and Friends of Music helped out by cooking a fantastic BBQ as well as providing drinks and nibbles. The ensembles sounded great and I know their directors were very proud. Again, a big thankyou to David Gauci, Danielle Greig, Adrian Hunt, Cassandra Douglas and all of the ensemble directors for their tireless work in supporting our music students. Finally on Friday night last week, the Visual Arts faculty concluded the year with the Art Show. Again it was pleasing to see so many families in attendance. The students work was simply outstanding and I am confident that our Year 12 students will do well at final moderation. It was a great opportunity to acknowledge the students for their hard work and dedication. At the end of the year the College will formally farewell Mr Dzint Jurevicius who is retiring but was a nice sentiment that the students on the night also took the time to farewell Dzint. The students recognise the important contribution Dzint has made to the Visual Art faculty and it is clear that he will be missed. This week our Year 8 students have been on camp and spent time with their homeroom away from the school environment, and I am happy to say that this time we didn’t have a ‘weather event’. The students had a great time getting involved in many activities and clearly have had an enjoyable three days. On the Horizon Even though there are only two weeks left of school we still have our Year 12 Graduation Dinner at the Entertainment Centre, Year 12 (2017) Orientation Day on Monday 28 November, Year 8/9 Swimming Carnival on Monday 5 December, Year 8/9 Alternative Week, Monday 5 December and finally House Day on Thursday 8 December. The school year concludes on Friday 9 December at 12.30pm. Reports will be issued on that day to Year 8s and 9s. Year 10s and 11s will be posted. FROM THE APRIM

2017 TERM DATES TERM 1 - Mon 30 Jan - Thurs 13 April

Year of Mercy draws to a closeLast Sunday marked the feast of Christ the King within the Catholic Church liturgical calendar and with it the end of the season known as Ordinary Time. This Sunday will begin the season of Advent, a word derived from the Latin word adventus, meaning “coming”, which is a translation of the Greek word Parousia. It connects us with our journey toward Christmas and the celebration of remembering the Mystery that is God entering into the human experience through the person Jesus. Throughout the four weeks of Advent, we prepare in joyful anticipation for our own renewal of faith in the God who seeks to find a dwelling place within our own flesh and bones.

Another significant factor about last Sunday was the conclusion of the Jubilee Year of Mercy which began on 8 December 2015. Pope Francis who called the universal Church into celebrating a Year of Mercy said, ‘It is the favourable time to heal wounds, a time not to be weary of meeting all those who are waiting to see and to touch with their hands the signs of the closeness of God, a time to offer everyone, everyone, the way of forgiveness and reconciliation’. The motto for the Year of Mercy was drawn from the gospel of Luke (6:36) where Jesus speaks of being ‘merciful as the father is merciful’. Throughout the duration of the Year of Mercy, a number of Cathedrals, Basilica’s and churches throughout the world, opened what were known as ‘Doors of Mercy’, and these became a tangible sign of hope, healing and reconciliation.

Our community has been engaged in learning about and practising being merciful this year, and although the Year of Mercy concludes and the symbolic doors of mercy that each of the Houses created to direct our attention to this theme will no longer appear, we have nevertheless a greater awareness of and hopefully greater openness to God’s abundant Mercy that is available to all.

VISUAL ARTS NEWSEach year the South Australian Gallery holds a forum dedicated to the ongoing improvement for Visual Arts Educators and students.

This year two of our current year 12 Design students have been selected. We congratulate Coco Hoskin Murray and Antonia Sinopoli for being accepted to present and for being the first students from Cardijn to take part. The forum is held every year at the South Australian Art Gallery and is run by the Gallery in conjunction with VAESA, Visual Arts Education SA.

The students will be presenting an outline of their years’ work to Arts educators, artists and students from all over the state. They were chosen due to the high quality, innovation and presentation of their folios and practical work. It is an honour to be chosen and it is great to see their hard work and dedication being recognised. We wish them all the best for the forum and for their creative futures.

Hello everyone! We are back after a busy week of music! We are proud to say that we have just finished our final Ensemble Music Night for the year. It was a great success and we are happy to say that everyone enjoyed themselves and we received great feedback about the music. We would like to give a big thankyou to all of the music directors and teachers who have supported us through the year and made the night run as smoothly as it possibly could. We would also like to thank the Family and Friends of Music for helping during the night and Matt Wallace for providing great wines for people to try. The whole night would not have been able to happen if it wasn’t for Mrs Douglas and Mr Gauci, we would like to say a massive thank you to them for making everything in music happen. We all really appreciate it. The next thing on our agenda is the End of Year Mass, held on Wednesday 8 December. It is the final Mass before the end of the year and our quartet will be performing another great piece directed by Mr Gauci. We will conclude the year with performances from the quartet, the Saukuru trio and from Mr David Gauci who will be comparing and performing at the Southern Community Christmas Carols - 11 December at the South Adelaide Football Club. We hope to see you all there supporting them through their last performances of the year.

MECHATRONICSAs part of the Year 11 Mechatronics class, we have been privileged to undertake a special task of setting up a weather station at the College. It will measure temperature, wind speed, humidity and much more. Only a select few schools across the globe have been allocated such a task. This project tests our classes ability to work individually and as a team. Everyone contributed ideas to where and how this task will be undertaken. From experience acquired from our efforts in the WEM challenge, we can apply our unique skills and talents to this new exciting project. The weather station is being operated on a Raspberry pi, an effective and affordable computer system. Our skill assets include problem solving, programming, team management and a load more. At the C2C expo we showcased our work to a panel of judges as well as the general public. We had the opportunity to view other team’s projects as well as other competitions that are also involved in the C2C programs. What we have accomplished this year is substantial, and we all look forward to participating in future projects with our vast range of skills.

REMEMBRANCE DAYFor many of us war is a phenomenon experienced through a television screen or by a journalist's account of fighting in distant parts of the world. For those of us born in peacetime, war can seem far removed from our daily lives. However, war has touched the lives of many Australians. Many were wounded or killed in action. Thousands returned home with the physical and mental scars of the conflict. The people who stayed in Australia also served in factories and in voluntary service organisations. On 11 November at 11.00am, the students and staff at Cardijn College gathered in silence to commemorate the bravery and sacrifice of the Australian armed forces who served and are still serving in war. The ceremony began when Year 12 student Alexander Barrott-Walsh walked through the “Remembrance” doors proudly carrying the Australian flag in front of an audience of 1000 people. Mr McCarthy spoke about the Battle of Fromelles where 5,533 casualties were suffered by the 5th Division in one night and the Battle of the Somme where the Australians endured 23,000 casualties and 6,800 were killed in about seven weeks. The College also acknowledged the 50th Anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan in Vietnam. The audience, at the same time, viewed images of Australia’s military history which highlighted the country's wartime contributions and role in international affairs. Year 10 student Conor Brown read a powerful reflection piece from Pericles Funeral Oration and Year 10 student Georgia Moorhouse lead the entire College in a Remembrance Day prayer. A special thankyou to Principal Paul Rijken for reading “The Ode” which comes from Laurence Binyon’s poem For the Fallen and to Mr Hunt and the ICT department for their equipment set up.

FROM CAREERS... https://myfuture.edu.au/The website My Future may be a helpful resource for your child, to assist them looking to get into the workforce.

A few lucky people know from an early age what they want to spend their life doing. The rest of us fit somewhere between having some idea and no idea about it.

It is not unusual for young people to be unclear about their direction in life, and it is often not until their early twenties that they gain a good sense of who they are.

Our system, however, asks much younger people to make decisions based on knowing who they are and what they want to achieve in life – think subject selection, elective choices, vocational study opportunities. There is a wealth of information about possible choices, which can leave people feeling overwhelmed, unable to decide or perhaps even uninterested in the whole 'careers thing'.

Finding out who you are and what you want to do is a process that depends on many factors.
