March 25, 2018 - Palm Sunday of the Lord’s Passion

This Sunday, we hear of Jesus being acclaimed as the King of Israel by a crowd of people as He rides

into Jerusalem on the back of a donkey. It is a great triumphal parade, a high point of local fame and popular

success for Jesus. Whose donkey was it?

The Gospel says Jesus sent His disciples to a neighboring village to untie it and take it away. But why

would anyone let the disciples of Jesus simply make off with somebody’s donkey? As far as that goes, how did

Jesus even know that donkey was there in that village?

This could be an answer: the account says that Jesus was near Bethany when He sent His disciples to

get the donkey. Bethany is the home of Martha, Mary and Lazarus. Like the donkey, which is a humble beast -

Martha, Mary and Lazarus are humble and ordinary people. Nobody would acclaim them in great

parades. Nonetheless, they are the close friends of Jesus. Maybe the donkey belongs to them or to their

friends. Maybe Jesus knows exactly where that donkey is because He has seen it when He visited Mary,

Martha and Lazarus. Maybe the villagers are so ready to let the disciples of Jesus take the donkey because they

know and believe in Jesus’ identity. On this way of reading the story, with the people shouting and acclaiming

Him King, Jesus rides into Jerusalem on the small beast which comes from the village of His particular friends,

two ordinary women and their equally ordinary brother.

And here is the sequel: the crowd that acclaims Jesus so greatly is next seen shouting for Him to be

crucified. That is how much fame and popular success are worth even today. And here is what particular

friendship with the Lord is worth: when Jesus ascends to God the Father, do you know what place He chooses

as the site for His Ascension? It is Bethany (Luke 24: 50), where His friends Mary, Martha and Lazarus lived.

And so in His royal procession, on that little donkey, our Lord shows us what is truly worth caring about - the

small things - and the people so dear to us and to our great King.

Palm Sunday, March 25 This Sunday, March 25, the Church celebrates Christ’s entrance into Jerusalem to accomplish the Paschal Mystery of his death and Resurrection. The memorial of this event is included in every Mass. At the 10:30 a.m. Mass, we will

observe the Solemn Procession, in which we will gather

in the narthex and outside the front of the church before

Mass begins. After hear ing a Gospel account of the Lord’s entrance into Jerusalem and witnessing the blessing of the palms, the congregation will process into the church and fill the pews. For all other Masses, we will observe the Solemn Entrance: The congregation will gather in the pews as is customary and the celebrants of the Mass will conduct the blessing and reading toward the back of the church, then approach the sanctuary.

Letter from Archbishop Chaput 2nd Collection for the Holy Land on

Good Friday, March 30

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

On Good Friday, March 30, 2018, we celebrate the mystery of the Lord’s Passion, contemplating the sacrifice by which Jesus redeemed the human race from sin and death. It also has been our longstanding tradition as Catholics to offer alms in support of the Catholic Community in the Holy Land. As directed by our Holy Father, Pope Francis, funds generated by this collection support programs and services in the Holy Land. Support is needed to maintain the sacred places, to provide educational and pastoral programs as well as outreach programs for the poor through established charitable institutions. On behalf of those Christians and others in so much need, I seek your most generous and sacrificial support of the Good Friday Collection for the Holy Land on March 30. I know that God our Father will reward your generosity beyond all measure.

Gratefully and with best wishes in Jesus Christ,

+Most Reverend Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M. Cap. Archbishop of Philadelphia

Cemetery Information As we further the maintenance in the cemetery, we would like to inform you of the following changes. • As stated before, and on the sign at the cemetery, trees

and large plantings and shrubs are not permitted and will be removed.

• Secondly, all shale rock flower bed borders are no longer permitted and will be removed (see example). Those pose a physical hazard while weeding and cause damage to equipment.

We will do our best to send correspondence to any family notifying you of these changes as long as we have updated contact information on file. Thank you!

This weekend, we participate in the proclamation of the passion and death of Jesus according to the Gospel of Mark.

In the extended version of this weekend’s Gospel reading, Jesus is at Gethsemane, praying to His Father, in much emotional distress. He knows he can save Himself. He can escape over the Mount of Olives in the dead of night and make His way safely into the Judean desert. Instead, Jesus chooses obedience to His Father and waits for His persecutors.

As Saint Paul puts it in the second reading, Jesus is “obedient to the point of death.” Jesus’ obedience is a lesson for those who are good stewards of their life in Christ.

Let us reflect on how we might be more obedient to the will of God instead of our own will.
