and the world. In class, we will view segments of the program and seek to learn
from these challenging and life-changing stories of forgiveness. Class will meet

CHILDREN’S QUILT GROUP ~ Heidi Mulford and Cyndi Schaubert have started a small group for those interested in making children’s blankets. These blankets are available for little ones in need of extra comfort and love. They can be given to children who are sick or hospitalized, newborn babies, baptism celebrations, or to comfort a child during a time of loss or trauma. ENVIRONMENTAL STEWARDSHIP GROUP ~ Carol May is interested in starting a group of people who are passionate about reusing, reducing, and recycling things that they use. The group may decide to help people recycle “hard to get rid of” items as one of its projects. The launching of the group will coincide with Change the World Sunday. CONCERT SERIES GROUP ~ Ellen Sterrett loves to attend concerts and plays and would love to have others join her. She is working on a list of possible outings for the fall season and will be ready to publicize the group in the summer months.
. WOMEN’S BOOK GROUP ~ We will be
gathering on April 19th at 7pm to discuss Devil in the White City by Erik Larson. This suspenseful book is set against the backdrop of 1893 Chicago and the World’s Fair. Join us as we go back in time! Contact Pastor Sherry with questions at [email protected]. STRESS SUPPORT GROUP ~ Will be meeting on April 2 and April 16.
Do you want to live and give like no one else? Do you ever wonder what it would be like to not have a car payment or to be able to save for your child's college? DAVE RAMSEY’S FINANCIAL PEACE UNIVERSITY will once again be offered here at PUMC! The program teaches participants how to eliminate debt and save for the future in order to achieve their financial goals from a Christian perspective. The cost of $69 covers the program and materials. Classes will begin Sunday, April 15, from 4 to 6pm. Childcare will be provided.
For more information or to sign up, contact leaders Matt and/or Colleen at
[email protected] or 630-405-3450
CYCLING GROUP NEWS ~ Winter is wrapping up, spring is on
the way, and the PUMC Cycling Group wishes to announce we will ride again in 2012! We’ll let the weather get a bit warmer first, but if you are one of those people who start longing for the bike paths about this time of year, this is the group for you! We’re always looking for new riders. Visit http://pumc-cycling.blogspot.com to read our blog and view our ride summaries from the past two years. Contact Eric Lenning @ ([email protected]) or phone (815-254-3964). As always, our goals are fun, fellowship and fitness! DISCIPLE BIBLE STUDY ~ Do you want to learn more about the bible? Are you intimidated by a 34-week intensive Disciple Bible Study? Would 8-weeks be more appealing?
Beginning April 15th you will have the opportunity to start your journey through the Old Testament on Sunday evenings in weekly chunks and finish before Father’s Day! On that day, Larry Newton will begin an Invitation to the Old Testament. The study will begin at 6:00p and allow you to “test the waters” in a bible study format. No previous knowledge required!
Explore the Old Testament’s story of God and God's calling of the people of Israel through the many "voices" of the biblical text. Hear the magnificence of a Creation hymn, discover the law and wisdom teachings, listen to the warning of the prophets and explore the poetry of the Song of Solomon.

Dear Churches Seeking New Members,
My husband and I moved to the city a few years ago and have been ‘between churches’ ever since. We’ve been to visit
quite a few of you and have some observations you may find helpful in encouraging more new members:
No Public Humiliation – Please don’t make us stand up in a room full of total strangers and introduce ourselves. We
want to be anonymous because we’re still seeing other churches. It’s not you, it’s us, and we just don’t know you very
well yet.
Acknowledge We Exist – Being anonymous is not the same as being invisible. If you act like we’re not there, we
start to think we might as well not be there as it doesn’t seem to matter to you.
No stalking – please don’t run out of the church and down the street chasing after us to tell us you were glad to see
us (and, yes, that really happened). When you act like it’s a miracle of God that you have visitors, it freaks us out.
Remember us – you get a gold star if we come back and you remember our names, but really just a friendly “nice to
see you again” makes us feel like you noticed we were there
Have a website – if you don’t have a website, we won’t be coming to your church. Nothing personal, but that alone
tells us enough to know you aren’t ready for new people.
Tell us what you really believe – be proud of what you believe and s-p-e-l-l it out on your website.
Progressive? Great! Theologically conservative? Super! But what do those things mean in the life of your community?
Finding a new church home is not always easy, especially if the one you came from was such an important part of both
your faith journey and your personal life. In our situation, we were very close to our previous faith community and it’s
hard to think of anywhere else coming close. For others maybe they’ve never been to church and want to explore that
spiritual side of themselves for the first time, but it’s all so new and confusing. Or perhaps we’re broken and we need a
place where we can be broken and it’s still okay. Any number of the things might bring us to your doorstep which can
make it hard to do much more than show up, sit quietly in the back, and sneak out afterwards. But that’s the beautiful
thing about church communities – they bring new people into your life, they can open your heart and mind to new experi-
ences, they can mend those deepest of wounds, and affirm your relationship with God.With all that on the line, don’t let
the little things mentioned above get in the way of connecting people to the Good News.

JOPLIN MISSION TRIP, TWO
MONTHS AWAY
The most effective and efficient tool
for mission trip fundraising is the
Mission Letter. This is a letter sent to
family and friends explaining the trip
and the need for prayer and financial
help.
All youth going on the mission trip
are required to come Sunday, April
15 at 5:00pm to finalize, print, and
prepare your letters on paper and with
prayer. Please bring your own
uniquely-written letter on paper or
electronically. Also, please bring
addresses for as many close family
and friends as you can (aim for at
least ten) to whom you will send your
letter. The church will stamp and mail
all letters.
For all information about the mission
trip, go to plainfieldumc.com/joplin.
Download the sample letter and
information about fundraising. Please
bring your skills assessment with you
(see the web site), or fill out the Excel
version from the web site and email it
to Pastor Chris.
Following our letter preparations and
prayers over the letters, we will
celebrate with pizza and a game night,
which will conclude at 8:00pm.
The deadline for registration is April
30. Youth that register before April
30 and send out fundraising letters
through the church will pay $50 to go
on the mission trip. Latecomers after
April 30 will pay the full cost of
$250. Go to plainfieldumc.com/
joplin to download all registration
materials.
SCRIP CARDS
Please place your Scrip orders by the
last Sunday of the month, April 29.
Your cards will be ordered Monday
and ready for pick-up on “Change the
World” Sunday, May 6.

Overview
The United Methodist Church’s top legislative body, the General
Conference, which gathers every four years, will gather April 24 -
May 4 in Tampa, Florida. Nine hundred and eighty-eight delegates from around the world will set policy and
direction for the church, as well as handle other business. General Conference is the only entity that speaks for
The United Methodist Church.
The 2012 conference has been planned by the 25-member Commission on the General Conference. Some
4,000 people will serve in a variety of volunteer roles such as greeters, registration officials, marshals, pages,
translators, hosts and hostesses, guides, drivers, musicians, technicians, reporters and emergency-response
volunteers.
Main Tasks
During the 11-day session, 988 delegates will revise The Book of Discipline, which regulates the manner in
which local churches, annual conferences and general agencies are organized. The book sets policies regarding
church membership, ordination, administration, property and judicial procedures.
Delegates
Equal numbers of lay and clergy delegates are selected from each annual conference. Every annual conference
is guaranteed one lay and one clergy delegate.
Just as the U.S. Congress redistricts every 10 years following a national census, the number of lay and clergy
delegates assigned from each annual conference changes each quadrennium based on the number of lay and
clergy members. The total number of delegates is limited to 1,000. The 2012 conference will have an increased
number of delegates from outside the United States.
Groups of churches in Africa, Asia and Europe are known as “central conferences.” Central conferences will
have 372 delegates, up 96 from the 2008 assembly and up 186 from the gathering in 2004. Two hundred eighty
-two of the central conference delegates will be from Africa, up 90 from 2008. The 24 annual conferences in
the Philippines will have 48 delegates.
Baked Potato Luncheon Let us celebrate Earth Day together after the 11:00 worship on April 22.
What food is more “earthy” than potatoes? We will serve scrumptious
baked potatoes and fixin's and request free will donations to sponsor the
youth mission trip to Joplin. Grab a hot, steamy potato, load it up with
your favorite toppings, and head over to the “Change the World” training
meeting. Grab one or two or more for the road. Or simply hang around
with friends and family and eat, eat, eat!
Thank you for your faithful support and participation.

SCHOLARSHIP ASSISTANCE FROM PUMC - Our church has been very
helpful through the last 15 years in financial assistance for our members who wish
to become ministers of our denomination. We have helped Mark Harkness, who is
now a pastor in our Conference; and Sherry Scates, who is, of course, our
Deacon. We are currently assisting Sarah Casey, who is one year from graduating
from Garrett Theological Seminary. We have given them encouragement and
have felt a bit of ownership and much pride as we have watched their
progression. We were delighted when Kathy Wellman decided to begin this
journey. She is beginning by taking one course a semester at Garrett. After she
met with the Staff Parish Relations Committee, which gave her their unanimous
endorsement, our Missions Committee felt we wanted to give her our "blessing" as well. We voted to start her
off with a scholarship of at least $300. Hopefully, the total raised this year will be even more. We expect to
increase her scholarships as she progresses.
CARNATION SALE PROCEEDS USED FOR WELLMAN SCHOLARSHIP - Our first fundraiser, the
Valentine Carnation sale, raised $225, which was awarded to Kathy as the first "installment" of her
scholarship. (If you wish to add to this, you may write a check to PUMC with "Wellman Scholarship" in the
memo blank.)
OTHER SCHOLARSHIP NEWS - Sarah Casey has been awarded a $1,000 scholarship from our church as
she enters the final phase of her preparation towards the ministry. These funds may be matched by our
Northern Illinois Conference through its "Dollars for Scholars" program. (To qualify, the student must have a
$1,000 scholarship from the local church plus the church's recommendation, etc. Sarah has met both of these
requirements, plus the other qualifications as well. We will see what happens.)
RIDES-TO-THE-AIRPORT SERVICE - This is still going strong, thanks to Jim and Jane Ferguson. Jim
and his helpers provide rides to and from the airports for members of our church family. Jane schedules the
pick ups. The drivers donate their cars, gas, parking fees and time; the people served make a donation to our
Volunteers-In-Mission Fund equal to what they would pay a taxi. (There is no set fee.) This fund is used for
the Volunteers-In Mission trips some of our adult members take from time to time. Right now, there is
$7,038.67 in the fund awaiting the next adult mission trip.
We sincerely thank Jim and Jane and the other drivers for making this possible. We also thank Darryl Dupre
for the use of an I-Pass, which covers the cost of the tolls.
DEL VALLE PREPARES FOR MIGRANT WORKER FAMILIES - Each year about this time, migrant
worker families begin coming from Texas and Mexico to work in the area fields. Because they usually come
in groups, they do not have room to bring much with them. When you are going through your closets, please
set aside usable clothing, shoes, work boots, etc. for men, women, children and babies. Bring them to the
collection place in the storage area near the balcony stairs (across from the church office).
