Letter to Parishioners Reading: Matthew 4 verse 1-11

Dear Friends,

The time of year we refer to as Lent is upon us. This period which begins on Ash Wednesday when we remember the beginning of Jesus fasting and temptation in the wilderness, and continues till Easter Day when we

celebrate His Resurrection from the grave after His crucifixion.

Lent is generally observed by Christians as a time of prayerful reflection and preparation for Good Friday and Easter Day. The choice to observe Lent is a personal one and there are no set rules or regulations laid down in Scripture for its observance.

Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and this year we will be joining with St Nicholas (our mother church) for a service. During the period of Lent we will be meeting with St Nicholas each Thursday evening for a series of special services of reflection on the bible, prayer, repentance, service and fellowship. Please do put this in your diary and make every effort to meet together with other Christians as part of your Lenten discipline this year.

Often, when people say they are observing Lent they mean that they have decided to give up something for the period. However, what they fail to understand or observe is that in place of what they are ‘forgoing’ they are to spend that time praying and focusing on Christ and the Easter story.

The discipline of giving something up, fasting, prayer and focusing on Christ is a good thing to do. However, it is not in and of itself meritorious and that is often a trap that people fall in to. Without

Page 4: Holy Trinity Magazine - Mar 17 · March 2017 Interactive Prayer Time We plan to hold our 2nd Inter-active Prayer Event on 9th and 10th April 2017. We would love to see many more people

thinking biblically people can believe that they are doing something to earn God’s favour by observing Lent. That is not the case in Lent and it is never the case. We can never ‘earn’ God’s favour. Hence the second part of the Lenten discipline - prayer and focusing on Christ Jesus - specifically the Crucifixion and Resurrection. The Easter Passion reminds us that it is all of God’s grace and not our ‘good works’ that brought about our salvation. Remember that as you observe Lent this year.

Please do observe Lent. Please do spend time in prayer and focusing on Christ Jesus. I suggest you select a biography of a Christian leader, missionary or figure from the past and use it as part of your daily devotions. May I suggest reading Helen Roosevere’s, who recently died, “Give Me This Mountain” or Alister McGrath’s latest biography of C S Lewis, or Charles Swindoll’s “Great Days with the Great Lives.’ If you want an easy read Brennan Manning’s “Abba’s Child” or “Pilgrim’s Progress” or The Narnia tales - especially if you want to get children and young people involved. If you want something a little more challenging may I suggest you take a look at Ravi Zacharias’ “Cries of the Heart” (on suffering) or any of Eugene Petersen’s books. There are some suggestions for you.

As I have said above the choice to observe Lent is a personal one. There is no requirement to observe it and you should not feel guilted in to observing it either. If you have never observed Lent why not give it a try. Do not set unrealistic goals for yourself. Whether you observe it in a major or minor way taking time to pray and reflect on what Christ Jesus has done for us on the Cross and through His Resurrection will be a blessing to you and to Holy Trinity.

God bless, Rev Dr Alan McCann

Prayer Team Alison Allen, Joan Harvey, Tess Hoey, Helen Hoey, Libby

Todd & Nicky Quigg

As you will notice the prayer team would like to welcome two new members to the prayer group, Tess and Helen Hoey. Tess and Helen have been meeting with the team as able for intercessory prayer since Christmas and in due course you will hopefully see them at the front of the church for after service prayers. It is lovely to have new members and I would like to take this

opportunity again to extend the invitation to anyone who may be interested in being be part of the team to come and join us.

The prayer team no longer meet on Thursday nights for intercessory prayer but are now meeting instead each Sunday morning before the 10.30 am service in the prayer room. The slips will continue to be lifted in prayer 4 times as previously (usually over 4 weeks but may be over a longer period). Therefore, please do continue to make use of our prayer request box situated in the front hall of the church. As always, be assured that information on the slips remains confidential.

The team will also be available for prayer at the front of the church after the Sunday morning service. Should you require prayer in a more confidential space please ask us to move into the prayer room with you and we will be happy to do so. We would encourage you to complete a prayer slip after you have attended for prayer so that we can continue to pray for your situation when we meet together. If you would be interested in being part of the prayer team that you consider this and know that we would dearly love to have your support. Please do approach one of us.

On behalf of the prayer team

The Crafters of Holy Trinity Crafters @ Holy Trinity continues to meet on a Friday night between 7pm and 9pm, though at times we forget the time and continue a bit later. This is a chance to continue those wee projects we have sitting in the corner, though some of us tend to think 'ooh I like what you are

making do you think I can do that?' and the next thing you know you have started a new project. Tea and coffee is also a must just to keep us going of course. It is a good wind down to the week. All welcome.

God Bless

Messy Church Messy Church really does need you.

Messy Church is on the first Sunday of each month.

On an average Sunday we have crafts/games/painting which are already organised, story or talk which is taken by those willing to do so and then we meet together for some simple food afterwards.

We really do need your help also Messy Church helps build confidence in those who join us.

We are not asking for people to do the teaching part, but help with that would be appreciated, but we do need volunteers to help clear up after the crafts, make tea, put out sandwiches, buns, fruit etc on plates, tables need set up for us to eat.

Help with making the crafts or supervising painting would be very much appreciated. The dates for Messy Church are as follows;

5th March 2nd April

7th May 4th June

2nd July 6th August

3rd September 1st October

5th November 3rd December.

C.M.S Used Postage Stamps I understand that now the Christmas season is well over and the postman will be paying less visits to your house, but please continue to save whatever stamps come your way. " I've only got a few" people say apologetically, but if everybody gave me a few every so often it would mount up to hundreds!! Remember the money collected from the sale of the stamps helps to support Christian projects in Africa.

Can I just say a big thank you to everyone who came along and participated in Sewing Day that was held on Saturday 11th February. On the day, we had people cutting and sewing and the amount of interest continues ever since, we have people cutting out and sewing at home. The interest this has generated has been overwhelming and I feel very privileged to be part of the whole process. I know I have asked if you have been to hotels and received a small complimentary sewing kit that you maybe don't use. Please would you kindly donate them to enable us to provide sewing kits to the pupils and women of the village. I was reminded that we also have little complimentary bars of soap that we would take home. Again, if these are not used can I ask for them to be donated to the project as well so we can place a bar of soap in the little bags with the sanitary items. Thank you again for support and donations of buttons/sewing items and the wee bars of soap.
