DEB’S THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK ..................................

Following our on-line Deanery service last Sunday, we wanted to share words from Bishop Matthew Taban Peter from the Diocese of Wonduruba in South Sudan.

He writes:

“We continue to stand firm on the foundation laid by our Saviour which no foe will ever shake even the Covid-19 pandemic. READINGS FOR TODAY

Romans 8: 1-11

Life Through the Spirit

There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death. For God has done what the law, weakened by the flesh, could not do: by sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, and to deal with sin, he condemned sin in the flesh, so that the just requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not according to the flesh but according to the Spirit. For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. To set the mind on the flesh is death, but to set the mind on the Spirit is life and peace. For this reason the mind that is set on the flesh is hostile to God; it does not submit to God’s law—indeed it cannot, and those who are in the flesh cannot please God. But you are not in the flesh; you are in the Spirit, since the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. But if Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness. If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will give life to your mortal bodies also through his Spirit that dwells in you.

Matthew 13: 1-9, 18-23

The Parable of the Sower

That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat beside the lake. Such great crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat there, while the whole crowd stood on the beach. And he told them many things in parables, saying: ‘Listen! A sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seeds fell on the path, and the birds came and ate them up. Other seeds fell on rocky ground, where they did not have much soil, and they sprang up quickly, since they had no depth of soil. But when the sun rose, they were scorched; and since they had no root, they withered away. Other seeds fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them. Other seeds fell on good soil and brought forth grain, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. Let anyone with ears listen!’

The Parable of the Sower Explained

‘Hear then the parable of the sower. When anyone hears the word of the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what is sown in the heart; this is what was sown on the path. As for what was sown on rocky ground, this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy; yet such a person has no root, but endures only for a while, and when trouble or persecution arises on account of the word, that person immediately falls away. As for what was sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but the cares of the world and the lure of wealth choke the word, and it yields nothing. But as for what was sown on good soil,

this is the one who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and yields, in one case a hundredfold, in another sixty, and in another thirty.’

Almighty God, send down upon your Church the riches of your Spirit, and kindle in all who minister the gospel your countless gifts of grace; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen

GIFTING A YEAR 6 PUPIL A NEW BIBLE .......................................... This was last week’s message: St. Mary’s School would like to give a Bible to each year 6 pupil as they leave school on July 15th but because of lockdown, this has been a bit tricky for them, so we wondered if people from the Bridport Team and other local churches would like to purchase a Bible for a year 6 pupil.

The good news is that there was such a big response to the appeal that the cost of all the Bibles has now been met.

BIBLE IN A YEAR ................................

Every week The Revd. Lorna Johnson meets with the ‘Bible in a Year’ group via WhatsApp and Zoom to study scripture and to be amazed, puzzled, dumbfounded and blessed together. The group are now exploring if they can start ‘spiritual walking’ – while socially distancing – with one companion. Just another example of all that is going on in the Bridport Team! If you would like to join them or find out more, please contact Lorna. [email protected] TEAM COMPLINE.............................

Thanks I would like to say a big “thankyou” to everybody for all the lovely birthday greetings and the beautiful church family birthday card I received on my 80th birthday. In spite of present times I had a lovely day with lots of cards, phone calls, visitors and a special family afternoon tea in the garden. I am one very lucky lady! Thankyou.

Thanks What a wonderful church family! Very many thanks for the cards, phone calls and visits I received on my 90th birthday. Alan Squirrell

WORSHIP TOGETHER AT HOME

The music group and others are singing a chosen hymn at 5pm every day in our own homes while we can’t meet up with one another. This is giving us a sense of community and people are finding it valuable. If you’d like to be part of it, please email Wendy at [email protected]

Hopeful Hampers

The food bank is fulfilling a very useful role in being able to respond to requests within 24 hours and filling the gap which Cupboard Love cannot cover between Wednesdays. HH recognises that currently it is difficult to donate goods but would welcome monetary donations which would allow them to make purchases of goods not in their stocks, and to make bespoke hampers.

If you would like to make a donation, this can be done by posting a cheque to Rosi Wilton at:

Clouds, Higher Street, Bradpole, DT6 3JA

The payee should be ‘Pathways to Care’ and nothing else. [This is the umbrella organisation which includes Good Books].

Please mark the envelope HH. Rosi will then ensure that the cheques reach the correct destination. Also please put your name and address on the back so that Rosi can let you know she has received your donation. At the time of issuing this sheet, a magnificent £325.00 had been donated.

She can be contacted on 01308 426547 or [email protected]

Team Survey................. See Team news – have you done it?

NATURE RAMBLES To help those in lockdown, I have created nature videos to listen to birds and look at wildflowers and insects as spring turns to summer. Why not try to recognise new or emerging/arriving species and learn more about them? I hope you enjoy the videos comforted that the natural world isn’t seemingly affected by this virus. Number 4 is final one in the series. Let’s take time out to enjoy what’s all around us. Links to watch the videos:

You may have seen this quite striking flower in the orchard field opposite the village stores. Alan Bowley has identified it as lacy phacelia (Phacelia tanacetifolia) or purple tansy. He says it’s an American native, member of the borage family and a great nectar source for pollinating insects.
