Letter from Andrew Housley Dear Friends, My family and I recently had afternoon tea on a narrowboat while cruising down the Leeds Liverpool Canal. Although it was raining, we had a lovely time. It was very peaceful and we hope to do it again sometime. In a few weeks’ time, we will be taking to the water again, but with Brittany Ferries as we travel to France. That trip may not be as peaceful, but we will enjoy watching a film at the cinema, looking around the duty free shop and exploring the decks. Apart from sailing on a Mersey Ferry, my experience of sailing has been quite limited. In first century Palestine, sailing was not for leisure. The sailing we read about is of fishermen, usually Jesus’ disciples. In the familiar reading of when Jesus calms the storm, the disciples were panicking in fear of their lives as Jesus slept. When Jesus wakes, he asks his disciples where their faith is, before taking authority of the situation and calming the storm. This story brought much comfort to the early church, and the image of a boat was an early symbol used by Christians. It seems that in recent weeks, turbulent waters have surrounded us. The EU referendum debate has contributed to many people feeling insecure for different reasons. The tragic death of Jo Cox MP moved us all because a beloved daughter, sister, wife and mother lost her life resulting from putting herself forward for what she believed was right; representing the needs of the vulnerable. Some of us may be struggling with turbulent waters of our own. We need to remember that whatever we face, we face with Christ. Jesus came to bring peace to our lives and when we travel though a storm, he holds us much closer in our prayer.

Worship & Learning Did you know that many more resources from ROOTS for Churches Ltd are placed on the St Michael’s Church website each week, including Bible notes, reflections, and prayers for both children and older people. Please visit www.aughtonstmichael.org.uk and click on the Bible icon. 3rd July: A supported community Luke 10.1-11,16-20: Summary * Because the kingdom is near, it is really urgent to deliver the good news. * Jesus’ servants work in a reciprocal relationship of giving and receiving generously. * Discipleship enables the disciples to grow in self-confidence and trust.

A personal prayer 1 Imagine that you are one of the seventy people that Jesus chose to

send out to share the good news of the kingdom of God.

2 Read Luke 10.1-11, pausing after each verse to reflect on what is

being said. Now, make two lists. First, a list of everything you might

need to take with you on the journey. Second, a list of all the things

that Jesus told his disciples to take. Spend some time reflecting on

these two lists, then make a third list of what, now, you feel you

should take. Consider the differences. How would it feel to travel

lighter? Is it realistic? What might this suggest for your real and

current journey of faith – is there anything you should leave behind?

Read Luke 10.16-20, again pausing to reflect after each of the verses.

10th July: An inclusive community Luke 10.25-37: Summary * The lawyer’s individualistic approach is challenged by Jesus’ focus on community and mutual dependence. * Stereotypes about ‘the other’ are subverted. * God’s mercy is shared through the compassion and help of other people. A personal prayer based on Colossians 1.1-14 Grant me: grace to serve, peace to give, love to share, strength to endure, and joy to praise you, all my days. Amen. 17th July: A serving community Luke 10.38-42: Summary * Service to God must be wholehearted, not grudging or resentful.

* There are many ways of serving God and everyone has an important contribution to make. * Women and men can serve God in line with, or contrary to, cultural conventions. A personal prayer In the motion of the night, and the rhythm of the day: God. In the planned meetings, and the encounters of chance: God. In the mundane tasks, and the important jobs and chores: God. In my head, and in my heart: God. In my hands’ tasks, and my body’s rest: God. In all I think, and see, and do: God, God, God. You and you alone. Amen. Amen. Amen. 24th July: A praying community Luke 11.1-13: Summary * Jesus teaches us to pray simply and ask God for our everyday needs. * We need to be persistent and bold in our prayer. * We can be part of God’s answer to prayer, through the power of the Holy Spirit. A personal prayer When I ask for the things I do not need, or have no use for – teach me simplicity. When I seek to do good, and fail in my endeavours – keep me faithful. When I knock at doors that shut in my face – renew my strength to love and serve you, at all times and in all places. Amen.

Everything and nothing One day, a rich American farmer took his son on a trip to the country - with the firm purpose to show him how very poor some people are. They spent a day and a night on the farm of a very poor family. When they got back home from their trip, the rich farmer asked his son, 'Now do you see how poor some people can be?' 'Yes,' replied the son. 'And what did you learn?' The boy answered, 'I saw that we have a dog in the house and they have four, running free. We have a pool that reaches to the middle of the garden, they have a river that has no end. We have lamps in the garden, they have the stars. Our patio reaches to the front garden - they have the whole horizon.' The father was speechless at his son's observation, then the son added, 'Thanks Dad for showing me how poor we are.' Isn't it true that it all depends on how you look at everything? If you have love, friends, family, health, good humour and a positive attitude towards life - YOU HAVE EVERYTHING. You can't buy these things. You may have all the material possessions imaginable, but it you are poor in spirit - you have nothing.

Our June meeting commenced with a minutes silence for our much loved, dedicated long term member Mrs Renee Sephton. Renee will be missed at our meetings and also her regular Church attendance.

Our guest speaker Rev. Martin Adams spoke about his time as Curate in the Sandringham Group of Parishes, which comprise of six rural parishes in north-west Norfolk. Their most well-known parishioners are of course, the Royal Family. Martin described ways in which his life was a little different to that of other curates. He had to re-schedule his own ordination to avoid clashing with the Sandringham horse trials, he had to cope with unexpected Royal visits, and had the opportunity to speak to the Royal family on several occasions. Our July meeting is on the 20th and it will be our usual Strawberry Tea when Melling M.U. join us. We would like to extend an invitation to all ladies to join us.

Bickerstaffe Women’s Institute At the July meeting of the Bickerstaffe W.I. we welcome Mrs. Barbara Hurst from Rainford. She is coming to tell us about how she started a small business using photography to create unusual yet attractive greetings cards for all

occasions. Many cards will be on display and for sale on the night. Please join us on Monday 25th July at 7.30pm at Four Land Ends Mission. Visitors and new members are always welcome. For more information contact Margaret Fairclough on 01695 729161.
