Parish Notices Parish Notices Jill’s Jottings: As I read the story of the ten virgins, I am reminded again about the importance of being ready.

We sometimes live our lives as if we will go on forever but in fact each one of us has a finite length of time in this world and none of us know when our final day will be. Similarly, we are told Jesus will come again to this world and we should be ready for his coming. The only thing is, we have no idea of when that will be. It is important that we live our lives in such a way that we are ready to meet our maker at any time.

I read this rather delightful story this week. It is written by a British man, Ron Dale:

Having completed National Service in 1954 as a military police dog handler in North Africa, he found he still had to do three years military service! The first and last exercise he was on was held in North Yorkshire. They were told they were part of a large ‘exercise’ testing out military response to bombing of the local area by hostile forces.

His role, as military police, was to signpost the routes for the supply convoys, control traffic and do general police work. At one point they were only five hundred metres ahead of the con-voys because of a map reading error that landed them in the sewage works. That night about six of them went on a pub crawl and at around midnight they caroused their way back to camp singing as they went. Suddenly out of the darkness came a hoarse voice, “Halt! Friend or foe?” “Foe!” they all shouted. A very frightened whisper came out of the darkness, “You aren’t are you?” What would he have done had they really been the enemy? But at least he was alert enough to challenge them! Reverend Jill

Cheques Paid to Parish: It is really important when writing a cheque for the parish that on the ‘pay’ column you write Holy Trinity Avonside Anglican. The bank is very strict and returning cheques that are not written correctly.
