    The Holy Spirit

This wholesemesterhas been an eye openerforme concerning the Holy Spirit. The

doctrine ofthe Holy Spiritisso vast. As I began to do my own personal study on the Holy Spirit,

I had no ideathatthere wasso much information aboutthe Holy Ghost. It wasnt justthe

information that boggled mymind; it wasthe fact ofthe Holy Spirit Himself. How Heisseen

throughouttheentire Bible, working in heartsand lives ofmen. Fromthe Old Testamentall the

wayto the New, wesee Him working behind thescenes. Even today, we can seethe working of

the Holy Spirit. Whata witness! Thatthesame Holy Spiritin the bookof Actsisstill thesame

    Holy Spirittoday.

John and Philemon, every bookin the Biblemakes

referenceto the Holy Ghost. The Holy Ghost was present beforethe foundations ofthe world.

Thereare 88 referencesto the Holy Ghostin the Old Testamentand 261 in the New Testament.

Right now, weare living in the dispensation ofthe Holy Spirit. In the Old Testament, they were

underthe Law ofMosesand were led bythe cloud by dayand the pillarof fire by night. God

intervened directlyto help men and guidetheirsteps. He led Israel personally, until they wanted

theirown King like otherheathen nations. God granted themtheirrequestand gave Kingsto rule

overIsrael. Wethen seethe prophetsrising up, asmen of God to beused bythe Holy Spiritto

lead the Kings. The prophets heard from God and then in turn prophesied to the King. The King

would then decideif he would listen to the voice ofthe prophet, orrely on human wisdom. In the

New Testament, Christ walked among men, teaching, healing, and leading multitudes. The

perfect plan ofthe Fatherwas being carried outin the form ofthe Son. He fulfilled the will of

God when He died on the cross. Fromthatmoment on, everything changed. It was finished.

There would no longerhaveto besacrifices ofanimals becausethe perfectsacrifice had finally

come. The veil ofthetemple had been rentin twain and by His death and resurrection, death was

    defeated.

Thisis when the Holy Ghost wasintroduced in a waythat had neverbeen introduced

before. The disciples couldntimagine how it could getany betterthan having Jesus with them.

They weresaddened atthe factthat He was leaving them. Jesussaid thatit was betterforHimto

go awayso that He would send the comforter. Imsurethey didnt comprehend what He was

trying to conveyto thematthatmoment, but when the 120 were waiting in theupperroom for

the Holy Ghostto fall, they finallyunderstood. The Holy Spirit wastheanswerto Jesus prayer

in John 14:16, And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may

abide with you for ever;Manyare notawarethatthey can be filled with the Spiritand enjoya

    Christian life farbeyond whattheyeverimagined.

Sadly, the doctrine ofthe Holy Spiritis one ofthemost neglected and misunderstood of

doctrinesin churchestoday. ThankGod forHoliness Pentecostal churches who teach and preach

the Holy Spiritand allow the Holy Spiritto directtheirservices. The Holy Spiritisthe onething

that distinguishesus fromany otherdenomination. Even if otherdenominations held the holiness

standard, it would still be different withoutthe Holy Ghost. The Holy Ghost changeseverything

aboutyou. When people visit ourchurch, yes, theyreinterested in the way we dress, butmore

than that, theyare curiousasto whatitisthatthey feel in theservices. That presencethey feel is

    and beencouraged.

The Holy Spiritisa person. Heis notan it. A mistakethatmany havemadeismaking

the Holy Spiritan impersonal forceinstead ofa person that hasa genuine personality. He hasa

will, intellect, and feelings. We damage ourthinking ofthe Holy Ghost when wethinkof Himas

merelya force. If weknow that Heisasmuch a person as Jesus Christ, weareableto be

sensitiveto His will. Weknow thata bodyis not whatmakesa person. Itisthespiritand soul

within that person. Withoutthespiritand soul, the bodyis justashellworth nothing. The Holy

Spiritis justthat, aspirit. Itmay beeasyto mistake His personality becausethe Greekword for

spiritispneuma, which means breath. Some ofthesymbolsused forthe Holy Spiritare

impersonal and you cannotsee Him. Onlytheeffects ofthe Holy Spirits working can beseen.

He hasasmuch a personalityasyouand I. Evidences of His personality can be found in

scripture. Paul wroteaboutthe Mind ofthe Spiritin Romans 8:27. In this passage, mind is

ascribed to the Holy Spirit. The Greekword translated mindisa comprehensive word,

including theideas ofthought, feeling and purpose. Itisthesamethatisused in Rom. 8:7 where

weread that the carnal mind isenmityagainst God: foritis notsubjectto the law of God,

neitherindeed can be. The Holy Spiritisableto lead us (Luke 4:1; Romans 8:14), hespeaksto

us (Acts 13:2; 16:6; 1 Corinthians 10-12), and Hesearchesthe hearts (Romans 8:27). All ofthese

things haveto be done byintellect. The Holy Spirit hasa will, asshown to usin 1 Corinthians

12:11; Acts 15:8; Romans 8:27) The Holy Spirit has feelings justas well asthe Fatherand the

Son. He can be grieved orvexed. Ephesians 4:30 says, And grieve not the holy Spirit of God,

whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption. Theattribute of griefisascribed to the Holy

Spirit. Therearesome otherthingsthat help to show that Heisareal person. Hereveals (2 Peter

1:21), teaches (John 14:26), witnesses (Galatians 4:6), intercedes (Romans 8:26), speaks

(revelation 2:7), commands (Acts 16:6-7), and testifies (John 15:26). Hestrives (Genesis 6:3),

calls (Acts 20:28), directs (John 15:13), and givesevidence ofreality. (Hebrews 10:15).

So often wetreat Himasan impersonal forceat workin our livesto giveusthe power!

Wesing aboutthe powerand we pray forthe power, but we forgetthat weretalking to areal

person that hasreal feelings. Itsmorethan just praying forthe Powerofthe Holy Spirit. Weare

to live livesthat please Him. When we do something againstthe will of God, weare grieving the

Holy Spirit. (Isaiah 63:10) How different would ourlives be lived if weall understood the

    personality ofthe Holy Spirit?

Sometimesitiseasyto thinkofthe Holy Spiritasimpersonal because ofthe different

symbolsthatareused to describe Him. However, realizethatthereason forusing symbols liesin

the factthat ourhuman languageis not fully capable of describing Him. So, in orderforour

finitemindsto understand the workings ofthe Holy Spirit, symbolsare given. In John chapter7,

waterisused to describe Him. Waterisessential to human life, justasthe Spiritisessential to

ourspiritual life. We wantthe waterofthe Holy Spirit flowing freelythrough us, notstagnant

waterthatisun-pure. Thereisan abundance ofthe Holy Spiritthatisavailable forthetaking.

Waterrefreshes, cleans, and revealsthe cracksin vessels, just likethe Holy Spiritrefreshes,

cleans, and reveals ourimperfectionsin orderto bemoreeffective.

In Acts 10:38, oil isused. Oil isthemost common symbol forthe Holy Ghost. The

anointing wasused in the Old Testamentto inaugurate peopleinto theiroffices (whetherpriest,

king, orprophet). Italso speaks oftheanointing oil forservice. Beforea person can beanointed

of God, theymust first besaved. Christ, in His life on earth, wasanointed with the Holy Ghost

(Isaiah 61:1). Weareto beanointed as well (2 Corinthians 1:21). Theanointing is what helpsus

in theministry. Theanointing is what breakstheyoke ofsin (Isaiah 10:27).

2 John 3:8 and Acts 2:2 Luke compares Himto the wind orbreath. Justasthe wind and

breath is necessary forhuman life, the Holy Spiritis necessaryin ourlives. The wind is what

separatesthe chaff fromthe wheatand the Holy Spiritis whatrevealsthesin in our lives. The

wind and the Holy Ghostare both powerful forces. Although the wind is notseen, theeffects of

itare. The wind doesnt blow in thesame direction, justasthe Holy Spirit doesntmovein the

same wayeach and everytime. Heisalso likened to firein Acts 2:3 and Revelation 4:5. In the

Old Testament, it denoted the presence of God (Mosesand the burning bush and the pillarof fire

that led the children of Israel). Firetries whateverit comesin contact with. Itreveals whatyoure

composed of. Ifthe fire cannot consumeyou, it will purifyyouand refineyou. Themore gold is

taken through the fire, the purerit becomes. Thisspeaks of cleansing in the Christian life. Fire

speaks of passion and zeal. A fireisnt half-hearted. Oncea fireisstarted, itsaggressiveand

bold. Thisisthetype of church that weareto be, onethatissetafire ofthe Holy Ghost.

The Holy Ghostis likened unto an Earnest. Theearnest wasa given asasmall portion of

that which was promised. Thisspeaks of ourfutureinheritance. We havethe Holy Ghost, butit

is onlyasmall part of what wearereally heirs of. An earnestistheindicatorthata covenant or

contractthat has been made. 1 John 4:13 Hereby know we that we dwell in him, and he in us,

because he hath given us of his Spirit. Thisis Godsearnestto us. We have hope ofa futureand

we have proof ofthis because ofthe Holy Ghost.

A seal isalso used to symbolizethe Holy Ghost. A seal isused to show ownership, we

arethe property of God. To putaseal on something leavesan imprint, just likethe Holy Ghost

leaves Hisimprint on ourlives, changing usinto theimage of God (2 Cor. 3:18). Ourheartsmust

besoftin orderforthe Holy Spiritto leave Hismark; thissoftening is doneatsalvation. A seal

is whatmakessomething secureand protectsit. Thisis nota permanentseal; we haveto besure

to stayunderthat protection ofthe Holy Ghost.

The Holy Spirit can bysymbolized to wine. When the onlookersspied the people on the

Day of Pentecost, theyasked ifthey were drunkwith new wine. Thatistheeffectthatthe Holy

Ghost has on people. They were not drunkwith wine, butratherwith the Spirit!

The lastsymbol thatthe Holy Ghostis given isthat ofthe Dove. Thisisseen in Genesis

1:2, wherethespiritmoved overthe face ofthe waters. Itis characteristic ofthe doveto find a

resting place. Noah sent outa doveto find aresting place. When the Holy Ghost wassent from

the Father, He wentto abidein the hearts ofmen. Weseethequalities ofthe Holy Spiritin the

dove because Heis gentle, peaceful, pure, and harmless. It has often been said thatthe Holy

Spiritisa gentleman. Theuniversal sign of peaceisthe dove. Itis only bythe Spiritthat we can

    have peacein this present world.

Justasthe Holy Spiritisa person, who isreferenced to through symbols, Heis not justa

person. Heis divine. Heisan intricate part ofthe Godhead. If Heis notequal with the Fatherand

the Son, wemightas well closethe bookand go home. Therearemanyscripturesthroughoutthe

Biblethat pointto His divinity. Although, He has been in the background, itis because Heis not

representing Himself, butratherJesus Christ. It has been said thatthe Holy Ghostis Gods

    mouthpiece.

Divineattributes have been attributed to Him. Hebrews 9:14 tellsusthat Heis

eternal. In Psalm 139:7-10 David tellsus of His omnipresence. Heis omnipotent (Luke 1:35),

and omniscient (1 Cor. 2:10). The Holy Spiritisalso self-existent (Romans 8:2). Thesearethe

samethingsthat have been attributed to God. The Holy Spiritisalso given theattribute of

Holinessin thescriptures over95 times. How could all thesethings beascribed to a person if

they were not divinity? Thereare otherevidencesthatthe Holy Spiritis divine. Divineactsare

attributed to Him, such as creation (Genesis 1:2), Re-generation (John 3:5) and theresurrection

(Romans 8:11). Heisalso known astheinspiration ofthe Word of God (2 Peter1:21). The Holy

Spiritis named in accordance with the Fatherand the Son. Heis placed in thesame class (1

Corinthians 12:4-6; Matthew 28:19). When Jesus wasteaching themabout baptism, Hetaught

themthatthey wereto be baptized in the name ofthe Fatherand ofthe Son and ofthe Holy

Spirit Matthew 28:19 In 2 Corinthians 13:14, Paul usesthe Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghostin

coordination when hesaid, The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship

of the Holy Spirit. All three ofthese havetheirown characteristicsand yetthey complementeach other.

Paul also usesthe phrase One Lordin Ephesians 4:4-6 and when he writesaboutthe gifts ofthe Spirit,

hesaysthings like Same Spirit, same Lord, and same Godto describethe organization and the

distribution ofthe gifts. Neverin the Bibleisthe Holy Ghostspoken ofas lesserthan the Fatheror

the Son. Thereareeven somescripturesthat heis directlyspoken ofas God. (Acts 5:3-4; 1

Corinthians 3:16) Therearesome otherworkings ofthe Holy Spirit, aside fromthosethattestify

to His deity. He convictsmen (John 16:8), Heintercedes (Romans 8:26), He performsmiracles

(Acts 8:39), Heteaches (1 John 2:27) Heraisesthe dead (Romans 8:11) and Hetestifies (1 Peter

    1:11).

The waythe Holy Spirit worksistrulyamystery. Itis wonderful to be filled with the

Spiritand to feel that working in yourown life. Sometimes werealways looking forthe great,

miraculousthingsthat constituteamiracle. But we fail to see how the Spirit worksin ourown

liveseverysingle day. (Genesis 3:5) I believethe working ofthe Spiritis both miraculousand

dayto dayexperiences. The gifts ofthe Spiritare provided forthe Spirit-filled Christian. They

empowerthe church and help the church to function properly. Weare peoplethatare living in

the flesh, but once weare filled with the Spirit, even though weare humans, we can walkin the

Spirit. Paul said, Yeare notin the flesh, butin the Spirit, ifso bethatthe Spirit of God dwell in

you The flesh is no longerruling overthe Spirit, but now the flesh isin subjection to the

Spirit. Weareto walkin the light. 1 John 1:7 Walkin the lightas Heisin the light We can

cometo that place whereevery day weare living and walking in the Spirit. The greatest working

ofthe Holy Spiritis not justtheraising ofthose who are lame, butitisthe complete changing of

a life. Itisthe Holy Spiritthat drawsmen to God through the Son. Through the Spirit, a lifethat

was completely dead and unregenerateis broughtto thesaving grace of God. Bythe Spirit, that

same lifethat was changed continuesto grow in graceand in theknowledge of ourLord Jesus

Christ. That lifeissanctified bythe Spiritand ifthat person will yield themselvesto the leading

ofthe Spirit, the Holy Ghost will continueto empowerthem forservice.

Anotherwaythe Holy Spirit worksisthrough the gifts ofthe Spirit. It has been

wonderful to bein SisterGoodwins classabout Pentecostal Dynamics. We have been studying

the gifts ofthe Spirit. The nine giftsthatare named are, the word of wisdom, the word of

knowledge, the working ofmiracles, the gift of faith, the gift ofthe working ofmiracles,

prophecy, interpretation oftongues, diverskinds oftongues, and the discerning of Spirits (1

Corinthians 12:4-11). All ofthese help the church function properlyin asupernatural dimension.

The gifts ofthespiritare given to those who have been filled with the Holy Spirit.

In Galatians 5, the fruit ofthespiritisaddressed. Thesearethingsthatthe Spirit produces

in a life when that lifeif fullysubmitted to Him. They become part ofthat person and part ofthe

character. When peopleseetheirlives, theyareseeing the fruit ofthe Spirit (even ifthey dont

realizeit). Theseinclude: Love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faithfulness,

meekness, and temperance. Interestinglyenough, thereare nine oftheseas well. Who wouldnt

wantto havethesequalitiesin theirlife? All ofthesearethingsthatyou can develop in your

    everyday life. Thisisall very practical.

Justasyou can sin againstthe Fatherand the Son, you can also commitsinsagainstthe

Holy Ghost. I believethatthesinsagainstthe Holy Ghostaremostsevere, becausethe Holy

Spiritisthe onethat drawsyouto the Father. Ifyou have offended Him, youve cut offyour life

lineto the Father. You cannot cometo the Fatherexcept bythe Spirit. Thisis why blasphemy

againstthe Spiritisso serious. It called theunpardonablesin. Mainly because onceyouve

crossed the line with the Spirit, itis onlythe Spiritthat can bring you back. Ifyou donteven

believein something, youre not going to yield to it. The Holy Spiritisthat which makes our

Christian experiencereal. To blasphemethe Spiritisto attribute His working to the Devil. In

Matthew 12:31-34, these people wereactually blaspheming Christ! They choseto reject Himand

the Spiritthat worked in Him. When aman has his heartsetagainst God, theres no wayto

forgiveness. When aman rejectsthe Spirit, thereis no oneelseto bring Himto God.

In ourPneumatology class, we weretaughtthatthere 7 sinsagainstthe Holy Ghost.

Some peoplemay noteven realizethattheyaresinning againstthe Holy Spirit. This has opened

myeyesto realizethat we need to be cautiousand careful notto sin againstthe precious Holy

    Spirit.

The firstsin isresisting the Spirit (Acts 7:51). Ifyouresistthe Holy Spirit, youre

actuallyresisting the workof God. The Holy Spiritistheexecutive ofthe Fatherand He carries

out his will. Thisismans choiceto keep theirsin, even though the Spirit has dealt with them

    aboutit.

Rejecting the Spirits convicting call, asspoken aboutin John 6:44No man can come to

me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day. Ive

alreadytalked aboutthisa little bit. Ifyourejectthe Spirit, youverejected not justthe Spirit, but

the Fatherand the Son. How can you besaved ifyouverejected the Spirit?

Rejection ofthe Spiritsrevelation isalso sin becauseyourerefusing to let Him change

your life. People wantto cling to theiropinions when the Spirit wantsthemto cling to Christ.

Even though youmay have believed ityourwhole life, doesntmakeitright. Its notaboutyour

opinion, butaboutthe Word of God says.

Anothersin againstthe Spiritistherejection ofthesanctifying work. Noticethatmost of

thesesins haveto do with rejection! The Holy Spiritisa gentleman, Heisnt going to force His

wayinto your life. When yourefuseto besanctified, youvestopped growing. Onceyousay,

Noto the Spirit, thatsas faras He can workin yourlife. Youare no longersubmitting

yourselfto Him, butrathersubmitting to yourown will. The Spirit worksto makeusmore like

Christ. When werejectthat, wearesaying we dontreally wantto be like Christ. People like

Salvation, until youtell themthatthey haveto obeythe laws God hasestablished. They only

wantenough of God to gettheminto Heaven. Thats notthe waythis works. Asserting self-will

instead of obeying the Spiritisrebellion against God.

To Quench the Spiritisalso asin (1 Thess.5:19). When youquench the Spirit, youare

actually choking Him out. Youre notyielding to Himand youre putting yourown plansand

programsabovethe workthat He wantsto do. The Spiritknowsthe hearts ofman, we onlyknow

what wesee, unless God reveals otherwise. This being said, itissafeto saythatthe Holy Spirit

knows betterthan we do asto what workneedsto beaccomplished.

When yourefuseto follow the Spirits plan foryourlife, youresaying thatyouknow the

best wayand youre going to do yourown thing. The Spirit cannotuseyou when yourein the

mindsetto go yourown way. Even ifyoure notsure what His will is, youshould be willing to

    Myers 12

do His will anyway. Every day, search out what His will is foryou forthat day. It doesnt have

to besome faraway goal. Ifyourein the will of God today, you can bein the will of God

tomorrow. Takeit one dayatatime, staying in His will, letting Him leading you. When you

become half-hearted and you neglectso greatasalvation, beassured thatyou havequenched the

Spiritsomewherein your life. We were nevermeantto bemediocre Christians. Istheresuch a

thing asamediocre Christian? I thinknot. Theyaremost likely backslidden orquickly on their

way. You cannot livein thesin ofquenching the Spiritand staysaved.

Therearetimes when the Spiritisquenched because of failureto take heed to the

wonderful gifts God has given usthrough the Holy Ghost. The Spirit longsto movein the

church, to workin heartsand livesthrough the gifts ofthe Spirit. Theyaremeantto edifyand lift

up the church, to help and protectthe church. When we neglectthem, were only hurting

ourselves. Wesometimes hearstories of people who had been serving the Lord formanyyears,

onlyto find outthattheyve backslid and lost out on God. This obviouslyisaresult ofsomeone

who has continuallyquenched the Spirit. The longeryouquench the Spirit, the less He deals with

you. You can quench the Spirit forso long that He declinesto deal with you. Only God knows

how farHis grace will reach, but I believeyourein ascary position when youve gone backon

God. Theres no guaranteethatyoull evermakeit back. Thisis called apostasy (2 Timothy 3:2-

    5).

This wasin ournotesand itis verytrue, Theseare days ofmuch religion, but little

righteousness Thatis one ofthesaddeststatements Iveeverread. Were living in a day where

peopleare not willing to yield to the Holy Spirit. Theyre not willing to paythe price forrevival.

Instead, theyremore worried abouttheirown agendasand pocketbooks. The only way well

everseerevival in ourheartsisto walkin the Spiritas Galatians 5:25 admonishesus.

The whole plan of God isto savesoulsand bring theminto arightrelationship with Him.

He longsto have fellowship with us. That wasthe purpose of Christ giving His lifeasaransom.

Now we havethat wayto cometo Christ, if weare willing to walkin the lightas Heisin the

light. God desiresto givethe Christian victory. Its not God who takesthe victoryaway from

people. Itis people who fail to obey God who losethe victory. Itis people who make grace what

they wantitto be. Graceis nota licenseto sin. Graceis given to usthat we would have powerto

liveabovesin! We dont haveto sin every day, thatsa lie fromthe pit of Hell. Ifthat werethe

case, we would make Christa liar. When wetreatthe grace of God this way, we grievethe Holy

Spirit. When wesin willfully, weare grieving the Spirit. Any presence ofsin grieves Him. You

can eitherhavethe pleasures ofsin orthe perfection of Christ. ThankGod that we havethe

powerto liveabovesin! We dont haveto carryaround the load of guiltand shame, butrather

livea victorious life, walking with Christ. Morethan grief overthe presence ofsin, the Holy

Spiritis grieved that we would choosesin overHis presencein ourlives. He withdraws Himself

    when we choosethe way ofsin.

By choosing sin, youre choosing yourflesh. Youre choosing yourself. Youre

disobeying God and making amockery ofthesacrifice of Christ. Thereisto be no confidencein

the flesh! Weare no longerto rely on ourselves, butratheron the Holy Spirit. Weareto dieto

ourselves daily. Ifyourefuseto do that, yourerejecting the Holy Spirit onceagain and asserting

self. Ephesians 4:30 And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day

of redemption. Itisa command that weare notto grievethe Holy Spirit.

Ifyou carryaround yoursin, youresaying thatthe powerof God is notableto deliver

you fromthatsin! Yourereallytelling God thatyou loveyoursin morethan you love God.

Sometimesitmay noteven besin, butratherthingsthatyou putabove God. However, when

something takesthe placeabove God, it becomessin becauseyou loveitmorethan God. 2

Timothy 3:4 lovers of pleasuresmorethan lovers of God Thisseparatesyou from God.

How can yousayyou love God when youreally lovesomething that God hates?

Therearethingsin youre not doing that becomessin. Neglecting to read the Word, pray,

orwitnessto othersisasin of omission. Its notsomething you did; itssomething you failed to

do. This grievesthe Spirit, justasmuch assinning. If werereallyin love with someone, well

wantto do what pleasesthem. Were going to wantto obeythemin everyarea, even ifits hard

sometimes. Thisisthe wayitis with Christ. When we fall short of doing what weknow weare

to do, itstimeto makeitrightand do what weknow weareto do.

The Holy Spiritisnt going to condemn. Itisntthe Spiritthat condemns. Ourown

conscious condemnsus when we havent done wrong. Ro 8:1 There is therefore now no

condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the

Spirit. The Holy Spirit convictsus when weve donesomething wrong. Assincere Christians, it

is ourdutyto makeitright. Youre notatotal failureifyouvemessed up. Youarea failureif

you continueto stayin that place, making the grace of God of noneeffect.
