From the Pastor’s Desk…

The well-known parable of the Good Samaritan has been passed on to us only in the Gospel of Luke. The parable teaches many important lessons, among them the difference between knowing the right thing to do and actually doing the right thing, when the need presents itself.

Everyone with a good moral upbringing (whether they are Christian or not) can easily understand, appreciate, and know what the right thing to do would be when confronted by a person in difficulty or trouble. “Knowing” means we have a good moral compass and we have a decent sense of empathy and compassion. Knowing leads nowhere, however, unless we take the first step, motivate ourselves to do what we know the situation requires of us.

Doing the right thing reveals who we really are and what we stand for. Doing requires courage because we could be the only person doing the right thing and we therefore might stand out. Doing could cost us something, time or money for example. Doing might also get us into trouble. Doing demonstrates we can turn good intentions into good deeds.

The “priest” and the “Levite” who see the man beaten up and half dead on the side of the road to Jericho know the right thing to do. They are well trained in the Law, so they know what the commandments of God require of them. For reasons we do not know they simply walk by. Perhaps they did not want to become impure and unfit for temple duty, as touching a corpse (if the man were to be dead) would make them. We don’t actually know.

Jesus, however, uses the despised and maligned Samaritan man, a social outcast, as his role model in the parable. For cultural and religious reasons, Jews looked down on Samaritans. Notice that it is this social outcast who knows and does: he sees the desperate situation of the wounded and beaten man and springs into action, even going overboard. He gives the innkeeper plenty of money to tend to the man’s needs, after first personally treating his wounds and getting him off the road.

The lawyer who wished to test Jesus in today’s Gospel utters the correct answer when Jesus asks him who was neighbor to the man in need. He responded to Jesus, that the one who showed mercy was neighbor to the man in need. Mercy is the virtue that makes us like God. To practice mercy in all aspects of our lives clearly shows that we know and can motivate ourselves to act as God would have us do.

Have a Good Week! Fr. Bill Arnold

St. Vincent de Paul Door Collection This Weekend. Volunteers will be at the church doors as you leave Mass this weekend. Please be generous.

Please remember in your prayers all the sick, homebound or recovering in our parish, especially Bob Brooks, Pat Edwards, Becky Fouts, Debbie Oberting, and Della Varacalli. Also pray for those in our parish coping with physical and mental conditions.

Additional Holy Spirit InformationSt. Vincent de Paul News: Parishioner support for our St. Vincent de Paul conference gives our parish the opportunity to help others in need. That need doesn’t take a vacation during the summer. During the past month, our conference was able to help 16 families with rent and 6 families with utility payments. Our pantry distributed 45 bags of groceries to 41 individuals/families. Our support also helped a pregnant, young woman with some immediate needs. Keep our conference members in your prayers so that when someone we help needs a listening ear, the Holy Spirit will guide us in patience and compassion.

Congratulations! The Sacrament of Marriage was celebrated by Angel Mendoza Mendoza and Rubicelia Chiguil Ambros at Holy Spirit Church on July 6, 2019. The Holy Spirit Parish family wishes them many happy years together!

Having a Child Baptized? Here at Holy Spirit, we have some helpful guidelines in preparing a family to have their child baptized.

• All parents must attend a Baptism Preparation class. The class is offered on the Second Wednesday of every month at 7:00 p.m. in the parish office. Pre-registration for this class is requested at least one week prior to the class.

• In order to register for the Baptism Preparation Class, the parents must be registered parishioners of Holy Spirit for at least 6 months. If you are not currently registered, we can assist you and register you for an upcoming class.

• Generally, Baptisms take place after 11:00 a.m. Mass on the first and last Sundays of the month. Please note that other children may be baptized on the same day as your child. We do not baptize during the season of Lent. We also do not schedule Baptisms on Sundays that take place near Holy Days or major holidays.

• The Sacrament may be celebrated in English or Spanish. Please understand that a Baptism may be scheduled in another language on the Sunday you desire. Your child’s Baptism may need to be scheduled on another Sunday.

• For further details or scheduling information, call the parish office at Holy Spirit at 614-861-1521.

Shared Parish Information

Missionary to Speak to St. Philip and Holy Spirit, next weekend, July 20 and 21, 2019: Every parish in the Diocese annually hosts a representative from a mission order of the Church. This mission representative comes to describe the work of the order of priests he belongs to and to make an appeal for your generosity and support. All mission workers (priests, sisters, and lay people) depend on the support of all of us to make their missionary work possible.

Fr. Thomas Annamattathil Varughese C.P, belongs to the Passionist Missionaries of Vietnam. Fr. Thomas will speak to both Parishes – St. Philip and Holy Spirit – about the difficult work of these Passionist Mission Fathers (and Seminarians) in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam (formerly known to Americans as Saigon). The Passionist priests serve in many ways as underground church. They are not permitted to openly evangelize for the Gospel. Please, do not forget the people, who in the name of God and in our place, go into the world to teach the Gospel. They need your support. Be as generous as you can be.

St. Philip/Holy Spirit Men’s Group: The next meeting is scheduled for July 20, 2019, at 10:00 a.m. We have enjoyed listening to presentations by well-known Catholic speakers. At the next meeting, we will listen to a presentation entitled, The Seven Pillars of the Church. We have plenty of room for more members. The meetings are held at the home of Mark Decker, 8810 Chateau Drive in Pickerington 43147. All are welcome, and we hope to see you there. The 2020 Catholic Men’s Conference is February 22nd.

Cash donations are also welcome. Donations may be dropped off at the Parish offi ce.

~ Sponsorship opportunities are available. If you own or manage a business, or have a family member or friend who does, ask them to be a sponsor for the Festival. For more information, please contact Maureen Dodd at (614) 226-4466.

~ Pick up and buy or sell raffl e tickets. Extra raffl e tickets have been placed at the entrances of Holy Spirit and St. Philip Churches. The grand prize is $1,000.00, second prize is $500.00, and there will be fi ve drawings for $100.00 each. Help support this great cause.

~ Yard signs coming soon. The yard signs advertising our Festival and Homecoming will be available soon in the back of Church. If you have a yard where a sign would be visible for all to see, think of picking one up!

Appreciation and Thanks. Please support our bulletin advertisers. They make our weekly bulletin possible.
