From the Pastor’s Desk...

What are we to make of the Gospel texts in which Jesus seemingly predicts the end of the world? Actually, whether these words were spoken by Jesus or placed in His mouth, they are easily understood, especially in the context of Jesus’ times. Many in His day hoped – longed for – an end to the Roman military occupation, the religious oppression and seemingly hopeless outlook for the Jewish people. Jesus describes to the disciples the great tribulations and terrors yet to come.

The disciples of Jesus always exercised selective memory when it came to His teachings. Jesus stands directly before His own passion, and He has three times told them of His coming “end time.” So, He chooses even more dramatic language and drastic images to describe the coming events. He describes the destruction of the temple and of the very lights of heaven: sun, moon, and stars. Since ancient man understood all time by the lights of creation, He is describing dark times to come. How will they see their way with nothing to guide them? He is predicting great changes in their lives.

Jesus is confronting in frank and candid language what they are about to experience. The disciples of course dodged any sort of acknowledgement of these coming events. They ignored any recognition of His coming passion and death. In their reaction, the disciples are similar to ourselves, as we usually put off any thought of diffi culty or trials in our own lives.

This language of Jesus, cited before the coming holidays, reminds us that, yes, this world and all that is in it, comes to an end. No one likes to face the end of anything even as, in the month of November, we remember so many close to ourselves who have already passed from this world. As disciples, we believe in the fundamental transformation of this world into the end kingdom of God’s reign and the resurrection of all life, renewed and changed into God’s image. God, the Father, is still in charge and fulfi lls all world history and time in His good time.

Have a good week!

Fr. Bill Arnold

Anointing Mass: Thank you to all who attended and assisted in any way with the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, which was celebrated at the 4:00 p.m. Mass last weekend. There was a good representation of both parishes present, and the help of the Dominican Sisters of Peace, as well as the presence of our parish choir, added to the importance of this Mass/ceremony in the life of our parish.

Decorating for Advent will be done after the 9:00 a.m. Mass on Thursday, November 29. Your help would be appreciated.

Additional Holy Spirit InformationAltar Servers, Eucharistic Ministers, Lectors: We need your help for the following upcoming Masses:

Thanksgiving Day (at 9:00 a.m.), and Immaculate Conception (Vigil Mass on December 7th at 7:00 p.m.). If you can help, please email your availability to [email protected], or call 614-861-1521.

Secret Santa Shop Opens December 2nd: Secret Santa Shop will open this year on December 2nd after Mass, for the children of Holy Spirit School and Parish. This event enables the children to do their holiday shopping “on their own” under

adult supervision and in the comfortable and safe environment of the church. Join us in the parish hall on that day for a pancake breakfast and shopping! It is a great opportunity to buy gifts for family and friends, and support the school. Secret Santa Shop needs candy for some of the gifts. Wrapped candy is preferred, but no out-of-season (Halloween) candy please. Questions? Call Cathy Held at 614-599-5934. There is a basket in the welcome center for your donations

Whitehall Community Kids Christmas: Again this year we are participating in the Whitehall Community Kids Christmas! Next week the Giving Tree will be adorned with many gift tags for the 25 kids in our community. The gifts that we are fulfi lling

are mostly needs such as clothing and outerwear, but we are also given a list of toys they would like to open on Christmas morning, too! Please consider taking a tag or two the next few weeks to help support this wonderful holiday giving experience.

Memorial Book of the Dead: In the front of the church, there is a table upon which rests the Book of the Deceased. During the month of November, when we especially

remember and pray for our faithful departed, all parishioners are invited to inscribe the names of deceased Holy Spirit Parishioners or names of family members and friends who have died.

Additional St. Philip InformationSt. Vincent de Paul Society Collection: Our St. Vincent de Paul

Society is asking for your help. During the months of November and December, we will be collecting new, queen size blankets to give our Food Pantry clients, as we did last year. We also have had a special request for large diapers, sizes 5 and 6. There will be boxes at the side doors and a place in the vestibule where you can drop these items off. Once again, thank you in advance.

RCIA Dinners Needed: Do you love to cook? Are you looking for a way to support our evangelization efforts? Each session of our RCIA program begins with dinner for the participants, their sponsors, and the

team members (approximately 10 people). Sessions are on Monday evenings and we need volunteers who can donate/prepare meals from Advent through Pentecost. This is a great way to meet our candidates and catechumens and welcome them to our parish. Please contact Mark Butler at 614-861-1521, ext. 12 for more information or to sign up.

St. Charles Preparatory School First Quarter Honor and Merit Rolls: Congratulations to these students from Holy Spirit Parish! Those on the Honor Roll have achieved a grade point average of 3.5
