This week, beginning on August 7th, the first major festival of Holy Spirit Parish will begin

and continue for four days! A huge thank you to everyone who has donated, volunteered

and assisted in any way in making our first festival a reality! Special thanks to the festival

committee which has worked for many months pulling this all together. It is a wonderful event of fellowship

and fun for the entire community. None of it would be possible without many hours of volunteer help and

organization. We give thanks to God for his many blessings and also for the gift of each other. See the

schedule on our cover page which highlights the food special of each evening as well as the entertainment.

This past week, Sr. Annie led a summer work camp for girls in the parish of Holy Spirit. Three sisters of

St. Francis and nine young teenage girls spent the week doing service projects at the parish sites of Christ

the King and St. James. They also helped at the wonderful, young people’s and families’ picnic at St. James

site this past Sunday. They washed tables down at St. Vitus for the upcoming parish festival and they hosted a

pro-life baby shower with over 100 women and girls who came with gifts for Alpha & Omega and Catholic

Charities. They ended their week visiting the Franciscan

sisters in the Wexford area.

There was a fabulous family picnic for the young fami-

lies of the parish hosted at St.

James site this past weekend,

Sunday, July 28, from 1 to 5 p.m.

Thank you to Rose Butch for

organizing the

Holy Spirit Family

Gathering and its

activities, and all

her volunteers, es-

pecially the core crew of Ilana Ilongo,

Heather McCosby, Amy Chornenky, Jean

Pascale, Joe Mercurio, Pete Pascale, Doug

Butch, Lorrie Millette and Chris Baker,

who got drenched in the dunk tank. See page 12 for

pictures and more information. We look forward to

having many such celebrations to get the families with

children to know one another! Look out for their next

adventure. Rose is already planning for a September 29

event from 5:00 to 9:00 pm.

From the Desk of Deacon John: Often, we hear people comment “the Church is tax exempt” and does not have to pay any taxes. While it is true, we have tax exempt status from sales tax, the Church does NOT have 100% tax exempt status when it come to property taxes. Presently we own 59 parcels of land, and pay County, Municipality and School taxes on most all of them. We are exempt from paying taxes on Cemetery Ground. Additionally, we have exemption from paying taxes on the assessed value of our school, worship sites and buildings used for religious education purposes. Thus, all our remaining properties are subject to tax. These include our office space, rectories, social halls as well as all vacant properties. Each year we receive a tax bill for all taxable buildings and properties based on their assessed value. Holy Spirit Parish presently pays annually just over $74,000.00 in property taxes. So, the next time someone tells you that we do not pay taxes, you can assure them we DO!

Do you know the very first time that music is mentioned in the Bible?

Genesis 4:21 (it’s part of a genealogy history) “Jubal, who be-

came the ancestor of all who play the lyre and the reed pipe.”

The lyre is a stringed instrument similar to a small harp and a

reed pipe is really any kind of pipe made of reeds, wood or

metal that makes a musical sound by blowing into it. The

majestic “Pipe” organ is a series of reed pipes and wood pipes

and metal pipes!

The name Jubal is related to the word “jubilee” or “jubilant”

and music certainly can be jubilant, although it can express

many emotions. That’s not to say that before Jubal, there was

not music. There is music all over creation!

Shakespeare said “The earth has music for those who listen.” As soon as a baby learns to

make sounds, he/she may hum and even sing! Instruments beautifully enhance our music for

worship, but our voice is the most perfect instrument! Lets use the voices that God gave us to

sing His praises!
