A Gospel Reflection

Helpful hints for this week’s readings

It’s So Beautiful There

The transfiguration reported in today’s gospel could be placed in the category of “near

life” experiences. Jesus and three intimate friends see another dimension of life. We see

Peter communicating to Jesus sentiments similar to people who experience “near death”.

Peter doesn’t slug Jesus. He didn’t say, “How dare you take me away from that”. But he

obviously was saying, “It’s so beautiful here and I want to stay”. “Let us make three dwellings,

one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah”. (Mark 9: 5)

But Peter soon discovered that he couldn’t stay there. He had to come down from the

mountain and face the reality of everyday living, like the rest of us. “Suddenly, when they

looked around they saw no one with them any more, but only Jesus”. (Mark 9: 8)

At the beginning of a relationship most people experience what is called romantic love. There

is a similarity between this experience and the gospel experience. Many do not realise that

romantic love has a beginning and an end. Romantics want to stay there forever.

But when it ends, mature love begins, and it is time to come down from the mountain and

face the struggle of everyday living. One of the reasons soap operas are so popular is because

they offer the viewer an escape from the difficult challenge of dealing with their own

relationships in the reality of daily life. The weekend can be a real high, but then comes

Monday morning and we have to come down from the mountain. We have to think about

earning a living and paying the bills.

Some people turn to drugs looking for the high experienced by Peter in today’s gospel, but

they don’t find it. They crash into reality and pay a high price for the experiment. But there is

a very important point about today’s gospel that could be easily missed. Peter’s experience

of the transfiguration was indeed something very special. But when “they come down from

the mountain,” they were not leaving the presence of God. God was still with them.

When have you sensed the hidden glory at the heart of our world?

We Respond …

In a world given over to cynicism, make hope a habit. Short-circuit doubt and negativity with

prayer. Living hopefully is one way to put faith into practice.

Would you like to make a DONATION to the Vinnies Doorknock Appeal?

Watch out for your local volunteer, and have some cash on hand to make a donation OR

collect a St Vincent d Paul envelope from the church foyer and return with the

collection at Mass or to the parish office.

The Holy Father Pope Francis has prepared and sent to all people his 2018 Lenten Message. There is a copy on the notice board if you would like to read it or go to our website and read this beautiful letter in full.

Second Sunday of Lent - 25 February 2018 Rattanak is a skilled young barber, living an independent life in rural Cambodia. But it wasn’t always that way. As a child he contracted polio and also became deaf. Like many people who are deaf or hard of hearing, Rattanak faced isolation, with a lack of opportunity to escape poverty. After joining the Deaf Development Program run by Caritas Australia’s partner, Maryknoll Cambodia, his life was transformed and he is now supporting himself, his wife and baby.

Please donate to Project Compassion 2018 and help deaf youth in Cambodia to build a just future, and live in communities that uphold everyone’s dignity.

A Just Future starts with your support! You can donate through Parish boxes and envelopes, by visiting www.caritas.org.au/projectcompassion or phoning 1800 024 413.

Deepening Prayer Throughout the season of Lent, we are called to deepen our prayer life. For some of us, this means beginning a habit of daily prayer, setting aside time each day to share our hopes, joys, fears, and frustrations with God. Praying first thing in the morning, while the house is still quiet, or talking to God while on your commute to work are simple ways to integrate prayer into everyday life. Praying the Rosary, visiting the Blessed Sacrament, or attending a daylong silent retreat may bring you to new places in your relationship with God.

Mass times at St Francis Xavier, Hall: Palm Sunday 25 March: 8:30am Mass Good Friday 30 March: 11:00am Ecumenical Stations of the Cross Easter Sunday 1 April: 8:30 Mass

Why Do We Give Alms? Charitable giving is a very ancient practice; almsgiving was normative long before the time of Jesus. The Lenten call to almsgiving means making the needs of other people our own. One of the central lessons of the cross is compassion; the heavy burdens we carry help us to appreciate the suffering in others. Sharing our material goods is often just the beginning of real Christian giving. We are also called to share our time tending to people in need. Outside-the-Box Ideas for Giving • Volunteer at a neonatal center, giving premature babies a human touch • Tutor a child or mentor a college graduate • Increase your donation to your local parish

WHAT GOES UP MUST COME DOWN

A little boy was out in his backyard, throwing a ball up in the air. An elderly passerby, not accustomed to such youthful delights, asked the boy what he was doing. He replied, “I am playing a game of catch with God. I throw the ball up in the air and he throws it back.” I am in no position to comment on God’s ability to play ball, but I do know that whatever goes up must come down. There may be exceptions, such as Charlie Brown’s kite! But as a rule, whatever goes up must come down. The process is so predictable that you could refer to it as a scientific law. The same process applies to our religious lives. It is a good thing to “go up” to a great experience with God, but we will become greatly disillusioned if we do not remember that eventually we have to “come down” again. John Thomas Randolph, The Best Gift, CSS Publishing Company

PREPARATION FOR THE MOUNTAINTOP A friend of mine has noted that, when children are small, parents discover that there are some words that we cannot say at the dinner table. As soon as we say words like ‘cookies, candy, or cake,’ our kids do not want to eat supper any more. They know what ‘cookies, candy and cake’ mean, but they do not seem to understand the word ‘later.’ They want the dessert now. Forget the main course. If we let them eat the sweet stuff, we know they will not be interested in the nutritious stuff. They would never have a healthy diet.

A mountaintop experience is like dessert. If that is the extent of our spiritual diet, we will be poorly fed. Our faith will be unhealthy. It will be not much more than a spiritual rabbit’s foot, something that protects us from problems -- divine cures for sickness, financial worries, the anxieties of life -- the glory on the mountain top. We need some preparation before we can truly appreciate the WOW. David E. Leininger, Wow!

Fast from hurting words and say kind words. Fast from anger and be filled with patience. Fast from pessimism and be filled with hope. Fast from worries and have trust in God. Fast from complaints and contemplate simplicity. Fast from pressures and be prayerful. Fast from bitterness and fill your hearts with joy. Fast from selfishness and be compassionate to others. Fast from grudges and be reconciled. Fast from words and be silent so you can listen.
