Catholic WOW (Word of the Week)

Ash Wednesday

—The first day of Lent. On this

day, blessed ashes, obtained

by burning the palms used on

the previous Palm Sunday, are

traced on the foreheads of

believers in the form of a

cross. Wearing ashes has long

been a sign of one’s sorrow for

sin. The ashes and the words

said remind us of death and of

the importance of contrition

and penance.—

“ And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to

them, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit.’ ” -- John 20:22

“Each child is a masterpiece

of God created with precision

for a specific purpose."

The 100th Day of School was celebrated with many

fun activities, including math, reading, art , and more!

Tanners Restaurant Day for HSPA – Thursday, February 22 All Day!

Please Join Us for a Restaurant Fundraiser for Holy Spirit Parents’ Association at Tanners at the northeast corner of College Blvd and Pflumm Road. The Fundraiser

is all day on Thursday, February 22nd. Come into Tanners any time that day, tell them you are with Holy Spirit, and a

portion of your total order (eats and drinks) will be donated to HSPA. See you there!

Art 3rd Quarter News—Mrs. Lloyd-Rosell I love hanging up all the beautiful artwork and having critiques in class, so it may take a

while before your child’s artwork makes it journey home. In the meantime, if you want to see what we are up to in the art room, you can check out my art teacher blog! Browse around

http://rosellart.blogspot.com/ to see the most recent completed artwork at Holy Spirit. This quarter, we kicked off all the classes by starting their Vocation Posters. We

discussed the different vocations and created art reflecting how we and others can be Answering God’s Call. Kindergarteners are looking again at shapes with artist Wassily

Kandinsky. They have impressed the whole school with their oil pastel drawings and now are creating Kandinsky inspired trees. First grade got messy with chalk pastel polar bears and now

are working hard on learning the basics of paper weaving. Soon, they will transform their weavings into cuckoo clocks inspired by the German Black Forest clocks. Second grade has been advancing their paper weaving skills while learning about the great quilt artist, Faith

Ringgold. Their next art adventure will bring them back to clay to create their clay Holy Water Fonts in preparation for their First Communion. Third grade has been finishing up their self-

portraits with acrostic poems and will soon begin their ceramic crucifixes. Fourth graders also have dived into drawing 3D forms with a full range of values and soon will start their woven yarn pouches. Fifth grade is in the middle of some very detailed pattern drawings and soon

will brighten them up with some negative space coloring. Sixth graders have been working for weeks on their half-face self-portraits and are getting ready to start their ceramic mugs. The three dimensional art elective class began with origami collages and are beginning to create

several clay projects as well, including flowers, wind-chimes or succulent pots, art toy figurines, and bird-houses. We will end the quarter with extra messy hands from paper mache

creations. Thank you to parents of all ages for your patience with some of our potentially messy, yet beautiful material.

Lost and Found

We have many items in our lost and

found! During conferences, there will be

a table set up by Mrs. Watson’s office

with all of the items. Any unclaimed

items will be donated to Turnstyles.

Thank you!!

Box Tops for Education

By clipping and saving Box Tops, we earn money for our

school. Each school can earn up to $20,000 each year. So

far this year we have earned $900.00. On this website,

you can track the earnings of our school, or print coupons

for Box Tops product. Also on the website is a list of all

products which have Box

Tops.www.boxtops4education.com

We are having a contest at school from Feb. 5 – Feb. 14. The grade who

brings in the most Box Tops will earn an Out of Uniform Day. Any grade who

brings in at least 1,000 Box Tops will earn an extra recess. Students need to bring

their Box Tops to their homeroom teacher anytime during that week. If you have

multiple children in your family, please divide your Box Tops into separate bags.

This way each student can turn in Box Tops to their teacher.

We will continue to collect Box Tops throughout the school year and hope to

earn $2,000.00 this year for Holy Spirit.

HOLY SPIRIT TRACK & FIELD 2018

4th – 8th Grade

Registration for the 2018 track season is open now on the CYO website. Click here to register www.cyojwa.org

Practice

We will begin practicing on MONDAY, MARCH 19, 2018 from 6-7:30PM. Practice will be Mon, Tues & Thurs-day’s from 6 – 7:30 at Overland Trail Middle School track, located at 6201 W. 133rd Street, Leawood, KS 66209. Spring is a busy time of year, we offer practice 3 nights a week to accommodate all our athletes, come as you are able! 4th graders will only practice one night a week, which will be Monday’s. Again, we run a flexible program, if your 4th grade athlete has another commitment Monday evening, send them Tuesday.

DO I HAVE TO ATTEND EVERY PRACTICE?

No, but we encourage you to come as often as absolutely possible. Track is a short season. At the end of our seven weeks we are just beginning to see what your potential might be. Take advantage of our time on the track. Work hard and we promise you that you will see improvements.

AM I ABLE TO PARTICIPATE IN OTHER SPORTS DURING THE TRACK SEASON?

Absolutely, but we do ask that you consider making your track meets a priority. Most importantly, the City Track Meet is scheduled for SATURDAY MAY 5TH. This is an all day meet. This is the only meet were points are scored and trophies are awarded. It is also the only time that records in the running events can be set. Please plan to be there! To compete in City Meet, you must participate in 2 meets. Note that 4th graders do not participate in City Meet.

WHEN ARE THE MEETS?

All of our meets are on Saturdays at either Bishop Miege High or Mill Valley High. The dates of our meets are 4/7 (Girls AM – Boys PM), 4/14 (Boys AM – Girls PM), 4/21 (Girls AM- Boys PM) and the City Meet is on 5/5. The meets begin at 9:00 am and 1:00 PM. The girls will have the morning meet the first week and the boys will compete in the afternoon. The next week they will switch. The meets usually last about 3 hours per session.

SO, WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS FOR JOINING THE TEAM?

The only requirement is that you must be a member of Holy Spirit Parish in grades 4-8. No experience is necessary to be a very important part of our team! We encourage everyone to come out and experience what it means to be a part of such a fantastic team.

DO WE HAVE A UNIFORM?

Our uniform is a very attractive Holy Spirit Track t-shirt that will be yours to enjoy for many, many years. The track shirt is included in track fees. The girls do have the option of

purchasing the shorter running short again for $20. Boys wear any black shorts to the meet.

DO I HAVE TO BUY EXPENSIVE RUNNING SHOES?

It is very important that you wear running shoes to track practice. How much you spend on them is entirely up to you. You can usually get 300-400 miles out of a good pair of run-ning shoes. We won’t come anywhere near that during our season, so think about what your running habits are now and what your future running plans are. The most important thing is to get a shoe that fits correctly. Garry Gribbles is always helpful in that depart-ment.

WHAT EVENTS DO WE COMPETE IN?

In CYO Track & Field we compete in 7 individual running events (60M,100M,120M,200M,400M,800M and 1600M), and 3 different team relay events. There are four field events (high jump, long jump, ball throw (football for boys and softball for girls) and shot put).

WHAT DO I NEED TO KNOW ABOUT OUR PRACTICES?

First, ALWAYS bring water. Second, dress in layers. It is much colder when we are wrap-ping up our practice than it is when we are getting started. Bring sweats to stay warm and protect your muscles. Finally, come ready to run. Dress in clothes that will be comfortable for you while we are stretching and running. Take a personal comfort break before prac-tice as we do not have access to school facilities.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

The track fees for this year are $95/athlete (4th Gr $70), unless this is your 3rd CYO sport then the cost is less $25.00. If this is your first CYO sport of the school year you will need to have a physical on file with CYO. Register for Track on CYO website at www.cyojwa.org

If you have any questions or would like to help with the program, please feel free to call, text or email us.

Happy Running!
